A different perspective of Acropolis area When you visit such a famous location and try to take photos, you either try to mimic the masters or do something completely different. I chose the latter with a bit of #icm #intentionalcameramovement #longexposure and i particularly like the first one of #herodeon gates myself. When there are crowds in such places, you are overwhelmed by the presence and it is best to integrate them into the scene if possible. For some people ICM is a total waste of time but i like it as it has the element of surprise as well as the intention of control, as in any art form that you will engage with. Further, it is possible to convey the distance one feels to the crowds using ICM the best. ICM makes each experience unique and a bit personal, which you need in such an iconic location. My very short trip to Greece was memorable yet bitter sweet. As always it is your true closest friends who lift you up and make you see the world in a brighter way which you can not accomplish on your own. I’m super excited to see @wardruna live in Odeon of Herodes Atticus or Herodeon on September 21st. Widely known by locals as simply “Herodeon”, it was built between 160AD – 174AD by the wealthy benefactor of Athens, Herodes Atticus as an ode to his late wife Rigilla. It was the third Odeon to be built in Athens and was distinctively Roman in contrast to the nearby Theatre of Dionysos. With its Roman arches and three story stage building, it was originally partly covered with a wood and tiled roof. The circular orchestra has now become a semi-circle, paved with black and white marble. With 35 rows, the marble auditorium extends slightly beyond a semi-circle with a diameter of 80 metres and today seats 4680 people. The original structure was destroyed some 100 years after it was built during the invasion of the Heruli in 268 AD. On the South Slope of the Acropolis, between the Herodeon and the Theater of Dionysos, stretches the Grand Portico of the King of Pergamos Eumenes II (197-159 BC), known today as Stoa of Eumenes 🎭 Like his predecessor King Attalos, Eumenes II was a great friend and admirer of Athens 🇬🇷 The Portico was an imposing two-floor building which provided the spectators of the Theater of Dionysos with a lobby during intermission and served as shelter from rain and sun 🌞 The Stoa, having the length of an ancient stadium, about 163 m long and 16 m wide, consisted of a double colonnade, one along the outer side and forming the front, the other in the middle 🏺 The façade of the ground floor had an outer row of 64 Doric columns, while a row of 32 columns of the so-called Pergamene order with channels formed the interior colonnade 🏛️
It was the third Odeon to be built in Athens and it was distinctively Roman in contrast to the nearby Theatre of Dionysos 🎭 When Pausanias, the Greek traveller and geographer from the second century AD, visited Athens during the reign of Marcus Aurelius, he described the Odeon theatre as “the finest building of its type”, with its Roman arches and three story stage building 🏛️ The circular orchestra has now become a semi-circle, paved with black and white marble. With 35 rows, the marble auditorium extends slightly beyond a semi-circle with a diameter of 80 metres 🏟️ Some restoration and rebuilding took place in the years 1898, 1900 and 1922, but it was in the 1950s when the city decided to fully reconstruct the venue before its grand opening in 1955 as the prime location for the Athens and Epidaurus Festival 🇬🇷 Today, the Odeon of Herodes Atticus remains one of the festival’s main venues 🎆 Getting to your assigned seat can sometimes be tricky as the stairs leading to rows are very steep. Yesterday Odeon of Herodes Atticus was the most beautiful place my eyes have ever seen. Together with my beloved stage designer @kouloumpichristina we projected our dreams to a full theatre for the “fairytale of the fairytales” - Odyssey, as our director @karmenrouggeri puts it. Despues de las ultimas semanas, bastante tranquilas, la movida de la ciudad fue un buen contraste. Lindas calles, mercados y la buena comida, claro, tampoco faltó 😋.
