Congratulations to Hamilton artist Kapwani Kiwanga as she represents Canada at the 2024 Venice Biennale! The exhibition opened April 20 in the Canada Pavilion in Venice, Italy, and will be on view until November 24, 2024. The AGH is thrilled to have supported this fantastic initiative. Congratulations Kapwani from all of us here at the AGH! Kapwani Kiwanga: "Trinket'' transforms the Canada Pavilion by way of a site-specific sculptural installation. She invites visitors into an immersive environment through an ambitious intervention on the building’s interior and exterior. Viewed from its facade, the building becomes a large-scale tableau where distinctions between inside and outside dissolve through transparency, layering, and transgressing of the building’s original boundaries. In honour of National Day of Awareness for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, Trans and Two-Spirit People (MMIWGT2S), we wanted to speak about our upcoming 'Before the Red Dress' event hosted by Speakers of Truth and Sisters in Spirit on Thursday, May 16. From 5–6pm, Speakers of Truth will introduce the Moosehide Campaign in the Sculpture Garden. Rooted in Indigenous ceremony and traditional methods of learning and healing, the Moosehide Campaign is a beacon of cultural respect and support. Central to this initiative you are invited to participate in a community arts activity signifying your commitment to honouring, respecting, and safeguarding women, two-spirit individuals, and children in our communities. We will also stand as a voice against gender-based and domestic violence. A sacred fire will be kindled to honour the memories of Helen (ban) Gillings, Kristin (ban) Shawana, and Renee (ban) Neganiwina. This fire serves not only as a tribute but also as a source of continued healing for all affected by these losses. At 6pm Sisters in Spirit invite you into the 'Shelley Niro: 500 Year Itch' exhibition space as we welcome the families of the three MMIWGT2S in the City of Hamilton. This gathering provides an opportunity for them to share stories about their loved ones and honour their memory. Your presence and support are deeply appreciated as we come together in solidarity and remembrance.
