Looking back on my journey, I am overwhelmed with emotion and gratitude. Being a first-generation Iranian-American, the road to becoming a doctor has been filled with obstacles higher than the minarets of Mecca––seeming insurmountable at times. But today, as I share this photo with you all, I am proud to say that I have matched into my DREAM Obstetrics and Gynecology residency program at UCSF! This moment represents not only my personal triumph but also that of my family, friends, mentors, and community who have supported me throughout this journey. I am deeply grateful to my parents, who sacrificed so much to provide me with the opportunities that have brought me to this point. To my mentors and professors, who have guided and encouraged me every step of the way. To my peers, who have been my constant source of inspiration and motivation. But babyyyyy, none of that matters anymore because WE MADE IT! Snagged the MD and the MBA. And I get to stay in DC! Shortly after I moved here 7 years ago, I felt like it could be my forever home. That became even more apparent as I got to experience the good vibes, the support, the Black Excellence, the connections in the Black Maternal Health space, and more that exists in DC. So I’m extremely grateful I get to stay in DC and stay home, at Howard, to train. Quite honestly, I wouldn’t want to take my talents anywhere else. I even manifested it back in June 2022! Like I said at my celebration, people will know my name in this field. My first residency interview is this week and this vacation was right on time so I could reset before things get real. Yesterday I applied for residency in Obstetrics & Gynecology! My first job as a doctor! I still can’t believe it…it’s only by the grace of God, the support of my family, friends, and mentors that I made it to this point. Taking the time to reflect on this moment and the field I’m going into, it’s not lost on me that modern gynecology was built on the backs of enslaved women- Lucy, Anarcha, Betsy and many whose names we will never know. I can’t wait to amplify the voices of my patients, hear their concerns, and advocate for them in anyway I can. I hope my ancestors are proud of me. I’m so excited to interview at programs across the country and find the place where I can go to fulfill the purpose God has for my life.
