In situations where they come into contact with humans, such as picnic areas in national parks and suburban gardens, brushturkeys exhibit little fear and often boldly attempt to steal food from tables and raid compost bins. Brush-turkeys in more urbanized areas show reduced fear compared to birds in national parks. The Australian brush turkey is certainly not the most beautiful of birds, but it is really a bit of nature in the city on Australia"s east coast. Building nests that are really mounds of compost, they are remarkable in that those nests can be up to the size of a car, all in the name of love. They are not good flyers, spending most of the time on the ground, but they do fly up to reasonably low branches of trees to keep away from predators like dogs, cats and foxes. This fellow was directly above my head on a coastal path, watching carefully but not moving a muscle. There was one that lived out the back of her parents place that had a huge nest. We would always go and say g'day to it when we visited there. There are bushies all around Kangaroo Point Cliffs.
