“In many ways, my life is inspired by my grandpa who was an iron miner and a lumberjack. He owned and cared for 120 acres, and he had it looking like a park in there. He only ever cut down the dead or dying trees. He had worked in the lumber yards, and when they got to the end of the forest they’d have to turn around and walk back through the stumps they cut. That must have had an impact on him because he always said, ‘I don’t cut the live trees anymore.’ And now it is the same with me. I never thought about the damage I was doing during the oil field years, but I thought about it a lot afterward. Gerry Nasi grew up in the Snowbelt of Lake Superior, worked in his family’s construction business, taught himself how to surf the waves of Lake Superior, and eventually built his own cabin and lives off the grid in the Northwoods. Along the way, he developed a real appreciation and respect for the power of the weather. “I have always been a bit of a science geek and have a tremendous reverence for the weather and the natural world. So when I was in my early twenties, I got my pilot’s license. At that time, nothing was digital. You flew by charts and went by weather. It’s really a very intellectual adventure because there are so many things you have to be conscious of and processing when you fly, which I loved. There’s a real freedom to it. Once you get up at altitude in a small plane, it looks like the world is spinning underneath you. It's like you're floating above everything, which is a very cool and otherworldly feeling. Learning to fly gave me a tremendous respect for the conditions that exist in the natural world. We’d see these accident reports, which were almost always down to pilot error or weather. So that really imprinted upon me how vulnerable you are when you’re in the air, and how you really have to respect nature to stay alive. It is ultimately more important to understand the weather than to know how to manipulate the controls on the plane to make it fly.” ----- We're counting down the days! Sometimes you hear a story that is so unusual and so interesting that you just want to know more. When I heard Gerry Nasi tell his story about a mishap while surfing on Lake Superior at a Moth GrandSlam storytelling event, we both definitely wanted to know more. We had so many questions. Why does someone living in the Lake Superior Snowbelt of Northern Wisconsin decide to take up surfing? How do you actually do it? Gerry lives in a cabin off the grid and his connection to the outside world is his cell phone. The 5G is strong enough for an internet hotspot, so Gerry and Love Wisconsin producer Alexandria Delcourt met over Zoom and she heard the rest of the story. While almost invariably, art students seem to move things around to the determent of the composition, “because they like it.” Later on it becomes a must to change things around for a better painting. ⬅️ photo 2) you can see the difference standing 5 feet apart can make. I’m happy about this double exposure (well triple really) because the amazing @francesterlich365 gifted me her abstract photos of hair for me to use as overlays! I’m already obsessed with how many ways I can utilize her beautiful images and she’s just the bestest for sharing them with me!! If you’re not following her you’re missing out! One last Northern Lights shot… for now… Saturday night was like an alien 👽 invasion. The green archway went all the way across the sky. It kept growing and then more green arches grew and started dancing and THEN purple shot up everywhere behind it and straight overhead. One of our most favorite accessible paths located on the far east end of Duluth’s Lakewalk is Brighton Beach. The park itself is named Kitchi Gammi Park and was originally established to ensure public access to Lake Superior. This entire beach is covered in rocks and pebbles of all shapes and sizes making it a destination you could make a quick stop or easily spend hours enjoying. During wilder weather days it’s a great place to observe the waves that Lake Superior can produce. You can never go wrong exploring here. As a fun fact, the park was first developed as a campground for auto tourists in 1922. The park currently doesn’t allow vehicle traffic and is only accessible via the Lakewalk. #duluthmn #duluthminnesota #exploreminnesota
