💜More purples! Often a garden escapee, but also seen in woods and hedgerows, this is a picture of some periwinkle that I saw this week - a gorgeous purple flower making itself known around now! Greater and lesser periwinkle (Vinca major and vinca minor) are both pretty similar in appearance, and both can be used in herbal medicine. 💜Periwinkle has been found to improve blood flow and oxygen and glucose uptake to the brain so it can be used after strokes and brain injuries. It can also be helpful in tinnitus, Parkinson’s, fibromyalgia and vertigo. One of the components, vincamine (an indole alkaloid) has been investigated in dementia patients to improve cognitive function. It’s a vasodilator (widens the blood vessels) so can be helpful in high blood pressure. 💜It contains tannins, which are astringent (drying) and so we also use it sometimes when there’s excess catarrh, or in diarrhoea, or for heavy periods. Externally it was traditionally used to stop bleeding too by using the leaves on wounds or by inserting them into the nose for nosebleeds. 💜Traditionally, periwinkle grew in graveyards so it was associated with death. If you were to pick it from a grave, you would be haunted for a year! Signs of spring were everywhere as we went on a walk around Willaston this morning, from the white blossom on the blackthorn trees to the lesser celandines and cowslips that grew along the grass verges of the village green. Apart from a cool breeze that blew every so often it felt surprisingly warm and as we made our way around the block the hedgerows, woven with lilac greater periwinkles, sang with blackbirds and robins. At the roadside, a patch of dead nettle grew in a clump. The wildflower is a great source of food for bees and because it flowers almost all year round it provides continuous nourishment for them when other food is scarce. Snowdrops and daffodils added a splash of spring colour along the footpaths and in the gardens, cherry blossom and hellebores bloomed.
