Hi, I'm Betsy Denny (@bybetsydenny), an abstract artist here at Good Dad Studios. I am self-taught painter, and I did take several fine art classes that did not include painting in my years as an undergrad. My heart beats for the worlds we have inside ourselves that get expressed through creativity. My inspiration for the last year or so has been the awe-inspiring power of the sun. I'm currently working on my "Zodiac" line that is focused on each of the sun signs in the astrologic birth chart. I mostly paint with ink on textured board that I can sand down to soften the texture, but recently started painting on unstretched canvas for a change. This spring I traveled to Australia and was surrounded by lush botanicals for most of my visit. I was so inspired by these tropical plants that I flew home and began painting them. I think that creating art is like telling people about some big secret I've been holding in for a long time. It feels good to me to express it, but also to find understanding through the process. My art practice is an ongoing conversation with and about nature through its language of shifting hues, constant motion, and reflective light. My main medium is color, which I use to tell stories of our lived environments and their impact on the body and mind. My recent projects include 2D and 3D wood abstractions, painted with vibrant hues and precise linear marks. The forms and colors are born out slow documentation of plants, insects, and landscapes of local greenbelts, state parks, and neighborhood gardens. I use my art to convey the convey the joy and healing nature can give us when we pause to take in its details and rhythms. At the same time, it feels impossible to have nature as my muse and then simply ignore the climate crisis. So I use my art practice to draw attention to places and organizations working to mitigate damage and renew ecosystems. I volunteer with the Native Prairies Association of Texas and make art about the lands they are helping to manage and restore. I look forward to a fall artist residency at the Wild Basin Nature Preserve where I will learn about research and preservation. I have also launched the Artist Parents & Caregivers Community. My studio at Good Dad is our meetup hub and an artist residency for those who need time and space to nurture their art practice. Whether you're caring for the land or caring for other humans, joy and hope is necessary.
