Watch out, this bug packs a punch! The name ‘giant water bug’ refers to many species within the Belostomatidae family. It is an ambush predator that can consume prey many times its size, including frogs and small fish! While it might look like a shiny cockroach, giant water bugs are actually part of the Hemiptera order. These ‘true bugs’ have piercing-sucking mouthparts and include cicadas, shield bugs, and aphids. But if it has piercing-sucking mouthparts, how does it eat such large prey? Giant water bugs have a unique adaptation; they inject an enzyme solution to dissolve and digest their prey, then slurp up the liquid. While humans are a little too large to eat, their bites can still be very painful. This has earned them the name ‘toe-biter!’ But this tough bug has a softer side too. The males are protective dads, guarding over eggs or even carrying eggs on their own backs. Giant water bugs also are miniature scuba divers; they carry a bubble of air beneath their wings to slowly breathe. Meet the Species Monday ~ Giant Water Bug This species is an invertebrate of the Lethocerus genus and Belostomatidae family. It is found throughout Eastern North America. An adult can range from 2-3 inches long. The stripes on its middle and hind legs and the pinchers on its front legs are a good way to identify it. They also have a pointed end. Interesting fact: These bugs can bite prey with their strong beak and pinch with their front legs. Their prey includes aquatic insects, small fish, frogs, tadpoles, small birds, and other organisms they can capture. This bug releases a powerful enzyme injected into its prey to kill them. Have you ever been biten by a toe biter (giant water bug)? Thankfully that has never been my experience. I found this one a while back, but he was pretty docile. Lethoceras use their mouth parts to pierce their prey and suck their guts out. Even though my advanced handbuilding class ended in September, I still want to finish the project I started halfway through that class when my first project just wasn’t holding my interest. I’m making a series of predator and prey animals you can find in a wetland, and each pair will be mounted together on a plaque, the whole group then hung together. I had been avoiding the insects, even though they are by far my favorite of the animals I’m sculpting, because they have such fragile legs and a high likelihood of failure. Today I decided it was time to start the bugs! I made a giant water bug first and instantly decided that I didn’t make it cartoony enough compared to the rest of the animals in my series so far. So, this is my second giant water bug and he looks a lot more like all my other sculptures! I decided rather last minute that I needed to add some eggs to his back too, so this is a brooding male carrying around his clutch of eggs. Met my first giant water bug last night. Gilly found him in the driveway and would not come back in the house because she was so entranced by this huge creature. Over 2” long. Thank goodness she didn’t get stung after I learned how painful these bites are. I have no idea what a waterbug was doing in my (dry) driveway. #giantwaterbug
