We all have ideas 💡 about who needs help to access basic needs like housing. Housing Connector exists to help folks access housing across all barriers. Think about your own housing story. Did you have a safety net in place in case you struggled to pay your rent? Did a family member co-sign your lease or help you with your security deposit? Meet Liliana, a dedicated parent advocate with ODMF's ACE Team. As a single mother to Zeus, who has Cerebral Palsy, Liliana has championed her son's needs through medical appointments, educational meetings, and cultural transitions. Through ODMF's Family Leadership Training in 2021, she discovered her voice and became a powerful advocate for policy changes, including testifying in the Washington State legislature for language access in schools, contributing to a new statewide law in 2022. Today, Liliana continues her impactful work with ODMF, serving on the Language Access Advisory Committee and mentoring other Latino parents in advocacy. We rescued Lena & her adult daughters from a meat broker before they were sent to auction for the holidays. They all arrived with an eye infection that sadly ruptured Lena’s eyes. Dr. P did surgery to remove both her eyes which were incredibly painful after rupturing and Lena is now thriving! She has adapted amazingly well. Thanks to your support, we were able to build the girls their own area with a barn identical to our quarantine barn which Lena was familiar with so that the transition was as easy as possible for her. After spending a month in our medical space, Lena was reunited with her adult daughters Bridget & Lena, they were all so happy to be together again. Then 2 weeks ago, Bridget gave birth to twins Murphy & Tate who she was very newly pregnant with at the time of their rescue. Lena is so good with the babies and they love their Grandma Lena! Every life that we save, receives top-tier care. From the best feed to medical care including specialty care, we go above and beyond to meet their individual needs. Although we are an adoption based rescue, for some of our rescues, like Lena, we become their forever home. We believe strongly in keeping families together so Lena’s whole family are permanent residents so that Lena can stay where she is comfortable and familiar with her family by her side. Proshots are how we go beyond doing what's easy (or performative) and really commit to including all members of our community in our art making. The proshot of Briar/Rose was an experiment and a big risk for us, and it was a massive success. Our Kickstarter was funded mainly by people who live outside Seattle, as far away as Asia! When Mimi's owner died, the home was cleaned out and Mimi was simply put outside and left to fend for herself. A senior pup with many health conditions, she would not have survived had it not been for a neighbor looking out for her best interests. We placed Mimi with a loving foster and got her checked out, confirming she has congestive heart failure and a collapsed trachea. We hate to imagine what her fate would have been without a concerned neighbor, and are glad to have her with us. Your donation will support rescue, rehabilitation, and care for hundreds of dogs each year. Dogs like Ginger, who was found as a stray and came to us on a transport from Yakima. As Ginger was settling in with her foster family, they noted signs of a pregnancy. Sure enough, Ginger was carrying five puppies! We were so grateful she had been found and sent to us so we could provide a safe environment and medical care to make sure Ginger and her babies had a healthy pregnancy and delivery. Thanks to her incredible fosters, Ginger and her puppies were able to remain together until all five babies landed in their forever homes. This sweet Spaniel was neglected and abused in his previous home, and a concerned family member intervened on his behalf. Chewy was surrendered to us in rough physical and emotional shape, with severely matted fur and a bad case of cherry eye. We got him surgery for the cherry eye, cleaned him up, and placed him in a loving foster home where he has been shining and thriving (he does need a new foster home, please see our earlier post!) We provide specialized medical care for our dogs whenever needed, covering anything from minor wound care to major surgeries. How many of us have wished those we love would enter into therapy alongside us? A therapist here at Atlantic Street Center witnessed this recently. The child our therapist had been treating for some time was showing immense progress. At a family meeting, an older relative was so impressed that he decided he wanted to take the first step on his own mental health path. The relationship our therapists have with their clients is so important because it can breathe new life into the whole family, not just the child. Seeing an adult from a very different generation ask for help also instills in the child that it is OK to seek support!
