Look at these beauties, just in from the Catskill Castings foundry! Keep an eye out for them on Main Street and on the Hudson in the near future. November 14th, 2023 marked the centennial of the great 1923 fire that destroyed much of Main Street. This event, a watershed moment for our small community, will now be commemorated in a publicly visible way. The Germantown Ice Company operated an ice house on the Hudson River, in between Cheviot and Main Street, between 1882 and 1913. The structure survived inconsistent ice harvests, having its roof blown off by a thunderstorm, a partial collapse onto the adjacent railroad tracks, and at least two fires only to be sold to the New York Central Railroad a few years after the last proprietor's death. It was dismantled and the lumber auctioned off. Much of the auctioned lumber was used to build the barn that is now the parish hall of the Church of the Resurrection. This cemetery filled up almost completely in just a few decades, making it a mid-19th century time capsule. A walking tour was last offered here in 2021, before the cemetery was cleaned with D-2 biological solution. Among the stories here are five of the nine victims of the March 26, 1845 Germantown boat accident; a German immigrant who died a week after a bar fight on Main St., for which no one ever faced justice; and several Revolutionary War veterans.
