We met up with the lovely Abby from Stretford Town Centre 😊 who has done a great job of organising the series of ‘Soaring Skies’ events over the past few weeks 🎉 I live within 4 miles of this lovely hidden gem and have never been. The Victoria Park in the west end of Glasgow, one of the cities most beautiful parks with the most disgusting toilets, a tatty, badly-painted collection of shipping containers. The interior of the Gents at least isn’t any better than the exterior - two urinals and one of two cubicals with the inevitable, scruffy ‘out of order’ signs and ridiculous rubbish about not filling water guns hand scrawled on the wall. And then there’s the disabled toilet, or rather, there’s not - not even any attempt here to cover up the shipping container origins, surrounded by tape more reminiscent of a crime scene and yes, yet again our friend the scruffy ‘out of order’ sign and another directing people to the library on the other side of the park and through an underpass. These toilets are a bloody disgrace and those responsible, if they cared, should hang their heads in shame, or better still, do something about it. It is not about the flowers. 🌸 Painting outside is about connection - a collaboration with nature, the elements and the people who walk past. I knew that I wanted to paint this flowerbed today after seeing it yesterday. I initially looked for a spot where I would be somewhat hidden, but the most beautiful flowers were right next to the path leading towards the bridge. I decided to be brave and put up my stand right next to the path, even if this meant that a lot of people might be walking past. This decision however opened the possibility for new connections. I heard so many wonderful stories today. A boy told me about his art teacher and a mom shared her son's fingerpaint techniques. I learned about a women's favourite coffee shop and another's relocation to Newhaven. Thanks to everyone who stopped for a wee chat, especially @lieses.pieces and the Victoria Park Rangers (who were so kind to take a photo for me). Today's joy really came from these wonderful interactions. A - F O R E S T - G A R D E N - D I S C O V E R Y As part of my research into local edible gardens, I found out about Waterloo Community Forest Garden https://www.facebook.com/groups/208223499196032/, an amazing project run by enthusiastic and very friendly volunteers. They have two adjacent sites, one that is a developing forest garden, a naturalistic space, with an orchard and meadow and brimming with wildlife features and a second site with productive growing beds, booming with produce at the moment. Victoria Park, Glasgow. I always think this looks like something from The Lost World, it’s right next to the disgracefully nearly always closed Fossil Grove. This is from the Historic Environment Scotland website “A unique earth heritage site with eleven fossil tree stumps from the Carboniferous Period. They are about 330 million years old, and are preserved where they grew. In late 1887 a path was cut as part of a new park through an old disused roadstone quarry when the first of the fossil tree stumps was uncovered. Their uniqueness, rarity and importance was quickly recognised.” For all they go on about it being a “unique earth heritage site” it’s housed in a scabby little building and is only open on the third Sunday of the month for a few hours. Not good enough.
