'The Rose Garden' is an immersive performance space filled with video, music, and objects devoted to #JohnJarboe's consumed twin, named Rose. 🌹Visitors can weave their way through a multi-room domestic environment reimagining John’s gender journey. Through interaction with surrealist inspired video sculptures, visitors will discover a series of short films with original songs, hidden treats, and an immersive maze of memories and provocations. The experience culminates in a hang out space made by and for trans and queer communities that will serve as a site of performances and gatherings, including live cabaret, community conversations, and clothing swaps, throughout the run of the show. On this #MadeMonday, we’re shining a spotlight on American ceramicist, Betty Woodman, whose time with FWM proved to be transformative. Woodman’s 1980 residency coincided with the end of her time working in production pottery and a distinctive turn towards sculpture, works that provided a sense of joy, beauty, and exuberance. In collaboration with our Studio, Woodman designed her 5-color yardage, ‘Platters’, which relates to her exploration of vessel forms and intentional blurring of art, craft, beauty and function. Cannot believe it’s been a month since my apprenticeship @fabricworkshop ended. It was truly a great experience that I will forever be grateful for. During the apprenticeship I continued exploring memory by creating this three-color screen-print, reminiscent of sundowning, which reveals its images only under specific lighting conditions, symbolizing the fluctuating clarity experienced by those with dementia. Just as individuals afflicted with this condition start their day forgetful and agitated, gain clarity as the day progresses, and then become confused again as evening approaches, the print mirrors this circadian rhythm. The appearance of the images coincides with sunlight touching its surface, revealing only certain elements at any given time. In the absence of natural light, a UV flashlight enables the observer to activate the print, mirroring the caregiver's quest for fleeting moments of clarity in their loved ones grappling with dementia. The emerging images come from the archives of my Italian American family, which regrettably carries a legacy of dementia among the women in our familial lineage. Berwick Street in Soho was once the place that supplied all the clothing workshops around Carnaby Street and Oxford Street with their fabric - now just two of them are left, Borovick and Misan - both in my view always worth a visit if you are in London, the range and quality is fabulous. FWM mourns the passing of the artist and activist Faith Ringgold, whose inventiveness and passion for justice and storytelling leaves behind a rich legacy. We're forever honored to have worked with Ringgold to produce her quilt “Tar Beach 2,” which tells the story of Cassie Louise Lightfoot, a young Black girl who grows up in Harlem, spending her time outdoors on the rooftops of her urban landscape. Ringgold chose a variety of decorative fabrics to border the quilts, making each quilt in the edition of 24 unique. "Tar Beach” continues to touch the lives of many through the artist’s award-winning children’s book and in museum collections around the US. The quilt in our collection is currently on view at @museumofcityny through July 21. #OnThisDay in 1865, Robert E. Lee sent a rider to surrender to Ulysses S. Grant using an unassuming white dishcloth to effectively end the US Civil War. Since first encountering the dishcloth in 2011, artist Sonya Clark (@sysclark) has questioned why we all know the Confederate Battle Flag but not this Confederate Flag of Truce. In exploring the notorious roles of these symbols, Clark has reimagined the legacy of the Truce Flag in several ways. In New York, you can view her “Monumental Cloth” at the Museum of Arts and Design (@madmuseum) as part of a 30-year survey of the artist’s work. #MadeMonday | Samara Golden creates immersive environments that challenge our perception of time and space. “I’m making an illusion, an impossible space,” says Golden, “a place that can’t be accessed in real life on earth, but it’s a space that feels real, a mirage that includes vertigo—something you can feel in your body.” During her 2020 residency at FWM, Golden’s research led her to a concept at odds with global COVID-19 restrictions. Embracing the possibilities (and risks) of touch, she designed and created an edition of blankets using Thermochromic ink. I’ve fallen behind in my #WomensHistoryMonth posts—though certainly not for lack of love for or lack of artists. . I saw “Jessica Campbell: Heterodoxy” at @fabricworkshop when it first opened earlier this year and could have stayed in that gallery for a longggg time. These details—of a new wall textile and printed fabric yardage—show the lush pattern that surrounds you in the exhibition, but do no justice at capturing the gallery itself (neither did my phone photos). Embedded behind the centers of some of the wall panels are two-way mirrors that function like digital screens—brilliantly used—featuring images that fade in and out of visibility, not just encouraging but *forcing* the visitor to slow down if they want to catch a glimpse of the art. In the twenty seconds it took for me to grow impatient, I immediately recognized how often I offer only a quick glance to something; but once I realized slowing down was central to the experience of the work and the space, I found so much to see in those moments of waiting for images to appear, including in closely looking at the new fiber works that make you want to cuddle up with the wall (though I didn’t!). There are three dining room-style tables with mismatched chairs that allow for sitting; embedded inside the tables are more screens that offer (fictional and real) archival images about women in history and specifically Heterodoxy, described by FWM as “the twentieth-century secret feminist debate club,” which operated in Greenwich Village, New York, 1912–1940. Who were the first to call themselves feminists? Unpack the lost history of Heterodoxy, a secret feminist debate club that met in Greenwich village in the early 1900s. Its members were instigators, dreamers, and radicals bound together and divided by causes that are still contentious today.
