Come visit us here at Wilder Ranch to catch a glimpse of these little cuties but remember to be respectful! Nursing harbor seal mothers are very aware of their environment and if they are disturbed, they may leave the beach and completely abandon their pup. Look quietly and bring binoculars to stay a safe distance away from them. . Want to learn more about Wilder Ranch's coastal nature? Lined shore crabs are the most common crab in our tidepools, but their quick movements and apt camouflage make them hard to spot! Our lined shore crabs are detritivores, meaning they eat dead matter in our tidepools. The environment would be a lot more stinky and gross without our favorite little cleanup crew! . 🙏Thanks to several concerned visitors at Seacliff State Beach this Brown Pelican was rescued Tuesday. ⛑️It was in obvious distress and unable to fly. After a call to the Santa Cruz Native Animal Rescue, one of their staff arrived and was able to contain and transport the bird to their rescue center on 17th Avenue. The staff member told of recently rescuing several other weak and emaciated pelicans. The SPCA of Monterey County also reported rescuing nine in the past two days. They told of the birds coming in hypothermic, emaciated and in desperate need of care but did not say what might be causing the distress. Valentine Lopez, Chairman of the Amah Mutsun Tribal Band, stated, “Creator gave us the responsibility to take care of Mother Earth and all living things. We must find a way to live up to that responsibility”.
