The mountain village of Katoomba was originally settled in the late 19th century by workers at nearby stone quarries and as is want in Australia the settlement was given the name of ’The Crushers’ to reflect the nature of work undertaken by the inhabitants. In 1877 however the name was changed to Katoomba to better acknowledge the name given to the region by Australia’s First Nation People who knew the region as ‘Kedumba’, meaning ‘shiny, falling waters’ no doubt describing the many waterfalls that cascade into the Jamison Valley. Towards the end of the 19th century Katoomba, and the nearby village of Mellow Bath, developed as resort villages that attracted visitors wishing to take in the mountain scenery and the cooler climate and relax in a spa-like setting that was becoming popular. Today Katoomba still enjoys those same branded qualities and many of the accommodation venues reflect Katoomba’s earlier years with period decor. The Kanangra-Boyd Wilderness is among the largest and most rugged wilderness areas of New South Wales. The park is the most south-westerly of the eight protected areas that make up the UNESCO World Heritage Listed Blue Mountains Area and forms a part of Australia’s Great Dividing Range. One of the features of the park is Kanangra Walls where about 170 million years ago tectonic forces in the earths crust started pushing the rock strata upwards. The spectacular Govetts Leap Falls is a bridal veil waterfall that cascades 180 metres over what is called ‘Taylor Wall’ at the western end of the Gross Valley near the mountain village of Blackheath in the World Heritage Listed Blue Mountains of eastern Australia. The waterfall was first discovered by William Romaine Govett a Government Surveyor who happed by the area in 1831. Back in 1838 a lad searching for an escaped convict west of the Blue Mountains in New South Wales happened upon a series of limestone caves close to the Jenolan River. What the lad didn’t know was that the caves date back some 340 million years and were the oldest known and dated open-cave system on the planet. The caves are now a significant part of the Jenolan Karst Conservation Reserve and are one of eight protected areas that was inscribed in 2000 to form a part of the UNESCO World Heritage-Listed Greater Blue Mountains Area. Heritage Listed ‘Caves House’ was built slowly, in several stages from humble beginnings of a kitchen that provided meals to travellers visiting the nearby Jenolan Caves way back in 1879. In 1895 the building was destroyed by fire, prompting a redesign and rebuild in what at the time was known as the ‘Federation Arts and Crafts’ style characterised by high gables, tile roofs, deeply recessed openings and multi-paned windows. The copper bay windows featured in this pic were added in renovations conducted in the early 20th century. Initially built to accommodate the wealthy, Caves House has become much more accessible over the years. The Aboriginal dream-time legend has it that three sisters, ‘Meehni’, ‘Wimlah’ and ‘Gunnedoo’ lived in the Jamison Valley as members of the Katoomba tribe. These beautiful young ladies had fallen in love with three brothers from the neighbouring Nepean tribe, but tribal law forbade them to marry into another tribe. The Nepean tribe brothers were not happy to accept this law and so decided to use force to capture the three sisters, causing a major tribal battle. As the lives of the three sisters were seriously in danger, a witchdoctor from the Katoomba tribe took it upon himself to turn the three sisters into stone to protect them from any harm. While he had intended to reverse the spell when the battle was over, the witchdoctor himself was killed during the battle. As only he could reverse the spell to return the ladies to their former beauty, the sisters remain in their magnificent rock formation as a reminder of this battle for generations to come. The Pied Currawong is native to eastern Australia and is a regular around the New South Wales Blue Mountains, where there is no shortage of insects to snack on and trees to perch in. This particular lad has been out foraging in the early morning in the Grose Valley and has come up trumps with an unsuspecting cricket. Larger birds have been known to take chickens and turkeys but the diet is usually smaller insects in the summer and when the insects disappear in winter, they become vegetarians until the summer harvest returns. Australian wildlife is world renowned as being amongst the most dangerous on the planet … and that reputation is solidly deserved. But with some vigilance and preparedness the risk of harm to health and safety can be mitigated significantly. This highly venomous blue-bellied-black-snake was enjoying a quiet afternoon dozing beside a popular track down to Pulpit Rock which overlooks the Grose Valley in the Blue Mountains of New South Wales. We missed him on the way down the track but noticed the lad on the way back up the track … and more importantly, he noticed us as evidenced by the flatter body posture adopted to enhance his size and warn us that he feels threatened. We gave the lad a wide berth and warned others coming down the track of his presence. Under no circumstances should trekkers try to kill the snake, that’s a battle you’ll probably come second in and Australian snakes are a protected species anyway. These guys are not as aggressive as some species and in reality are more worried about us than we are of them but discretion is a valuable commodity when trekking in the Australian bush. Sublime Point projects into the Blue Mountains Jamison Valley from the mountain village of Leura. Spectacular views of the Valley are on offer from the lookout at the southern end of a walking track that leads through the forrest of Casuarinas; but today no spectacular views as mist rolls across the Blue Mountains Plateau limiting visibility to 100 metres or so. Australia’s ‘Blue Mountains’ were formed some 300 million years ago when layers of sedimentary deposits were laid down in a shallow ocean that covered the area. About 50 million years ago the area was uplifted, the strata warped and small faults developed in the exposed strata. Fast forward to today and continued erosion by water permeating those small faults has led to the formation of the spectacular gorges and steep escarpments that are so admired by over 4 million people each year.
