Australian wildlife is world renowned as being amongst the most dangerous on the planet … and that reputation is solidly deserved.  But with some vigilance and preparedness the risk of harm to health and safety can be mitigated significantly.  This highly venomous blue-bellied-black-snake was enjoying a quiet afternoon dozing beside a popular track down to Pulpit Rock which overlooks the Grose Valley in the Blue Mountains of New South Wales.  We missed him on the way down the track but noticed the lad on the way back up the track … and more importantly, he noticed us as evidenced by the flatter body posture adopted to enhance his size and warn us that he feels threatened.  We gave the lad a wide berth and warned others coming down the track of his presence.  Under no circumstances should trekkers try to kill the snake, that’s a battle you’ll probably come second in and Australian snakes are a protected species anyway.  These guys are not as aggressive as some species and in reality are more worried about us than we are of them but discretion is a valuable commodity when trekking in the Australian bush.
