Back from the D, a bit tired but overwhelmed. That 10d trip to Detroit was a very special one. How I was treated and welcome, the people I met and talked to, all these amazing discoveries, the funky parties, the techno museum, the Motown museum, the time spent with the one and only Dez, and of course the endless digging sessions. This is Detroit, baby ! Behind this iron curtain, among other very good records, I’ve been lucky to find the RAMP and the cult Spanish psych groove album by Pan & Regaliz (photo 2). Funny point : never had the opportunity to get that one in Spain at an affordable price, and I had to go far from my base to get it. Wow wow wow ladies and gentlemen let me introduce -if you don’t know it yet- to this monument. Paris has its Eiffel Tower, Roma has the Coliseum, Detroit’s monument is this. Considered as the first -or one of the first- techno tune, Anumberofnames’ “Sharevari” is the key track, when soul and funk were kinda changing and as hip hop emerged. So this is Detroit’s dark, industrial funk that later became known throughout the world under the name techno. Btw did you know that the first name of this genre was “hi tek soul”. The word “techno” took over. Pic shows the emblematic and elusive original 12” released in 1981. Swipe to watch a bit of the footage from The Scene, the mythic Detroit answer to Soul Train.
