Well, that’s a wrap for Kidding Season 2024 on our farm ✅ If you have been following us on IG 👀for any length of time, you will know that we are a small “boutique” farm, and currently only breed a couple of does each year. This is mainly due to our other off-farm commitments (full time jobs 👩💼will do that). Maintaining a small initial group of quality animals will allow us to cull carefully and stay highly selective as we curate our herd. Sherry and Barry - who were out of one of our foundation NOA does, Phoebe - are doing great and growing so fast! We plan to retain Sherry to see how she matures, and may breed her to kid as a two year old in 2026 🐐 In the meantime, Ellie (Dawnridge Ranch Eleanor Rigby, who is the daughter to Phoebe’s full-sister, Grace) gave birth to her much-anticipated offspring, sired by our handsome Redwood Hills buck, Dicky (Redwood Hills NSMR Klein Rich). This was my first kidding without my son there as an extra set of hands. Thankfully, it was the easiest and fastest birth ever: When I fed the goats in the morning, I had noticed Ellie’s ligaments were mostly gone, so I figured she would probably kid either late that afternoon or maybe early evening; nothing made me feel like birth was imminent. After running errands for most of the morning, I went out to the barn at noon, sat with her for a few minutes, and noticed she was having mild contractions. Suddenly she let out a huge scream 😱 with a major push. I was like ”Oh, ok. We’re doing this right now?” Using a washcloth and extra hairtie from my kidding kit as a makeshift stand, I set up my phone next to the wall 📲and I was able to capture the whole thing on video (posted here for your viewing pleasure). If you watch the video to the end, you will notice that I was a little bummed that she only had a single buckling 🥴, whom we are calling Larry. But I have to say that he is a freaking GORGEOUS little dude (of course…isn’t that always the way?!?). IT WORKS! 🙏🥰🥳🎉 THANK YOU to EVERYONE who has sent in goodies and much needed items from our Wishlist! THANK YOU as well, to a lovely donor who had a few boxes of clumping litter seeking a home! We've dropped off some of those boxes already to our foster home with Loxie, Smudge, Jolene, Millie and Rosie! They go through LOTS of litter and it's a help to ease the load of their foster mom purchasing litter. There is such a weight that lifts when needs are met like this. I can't explain. 🐾🧡🤍 Visited the “meant to be kittens” today and brought them back (2 doors down) to meet the family. They don’t come to us until they’re 8 weeks old as per the agreement our neighbors have with the shelter. Was hoping for something like photos 5-10 when we brought Moose and his brother home to our yellow Lab Augie 🐾… who essentially became their Mother. Buck became apoplectic in his excitement and mimicked Augie’s reaction in true retriever form! The kittens 🐱gave baby hisses and would have none of it. They love me, Andy and the rest of the world, but they’re only 4 weeks old. Too young to have been separated from their Mother 🐈, and too young to “attach” yet to Buck we guess… baby steps. 🧺 I took them a basket we had for Moose and Flaco 24 years ago… used by Cub and Bibsey too 11 years ago… stuffed it with one of Buck and Tanner’s 🐑 chop toys and a blanket… they LOVE it. ❤️ Bibsey and Tanner you ask?
