William Newton’s Cressbrook Mill at Water-cum-Jolly may well be “august”, However, in its heyday it was a place of hideous cruelty and exploitation, where “apprentices”, the starving children of London orphanages, were brought in to be worked literally to death in many cases, in pursuit of fat profits for the mill owners, Newton included. Just back from an enjoyable week in the Peak District and weren’t we lucky with the weather ? We stayed in an apartment at Cressbrook Mill, pictured here. The original mill was built by Richard Arkwright in 1782. By the 1970’s it was in a state of total disrepair. White to Dark Peak - Day 1: So started out beautiful and sunny in Bakewell…. It was chucking it down by the time I hit the Monsal Trail 😂. However, the Headstone Tunnel did offer mighty respite from the rain. This trail is more challenging than I thought and so far has had its ups and downs. The White Peak if I’m honest is not my favourite scenery of the Peaks and there’s been some very very long boring stretches of farmland. It’s been quite steep at times and treacherously muddy so today has taken me ages! In saying that though, the Monsal Trail, Cressbrook Mill and Cressbrook Dale are definitely the highlights. Loved them immensely. Tomorrow will see me hit Dark Peak territory which is more up my street. I’m so looking forward to that. Snuggled in my tent now all cozy, but mind I am grateful of my Rab down jacket 🙂. Oh… and it’s chucking it down again! The Monsal Trail featured in tonight’s episode of “Motorhoming with Merton and Webster” on Channel 5 as Paul Merton and his wife Suki Webster visited the Peak District. In the programme the pair cycled the Monsal Trail and I don’t blame them as it’s one of my favourite places in the Peaks 😍 The Monsal Trail is about 8.5 miles (13.7 km) long section of the former Manchester, Buxton, Matlock and Midland Junction Railway, which was built by the Midland Railway in 1863 to link Manchester with London and closed in 1968. The trail opened in 1981 and is now a hugely popular cycling, horse riding and walking trail through the most beautiful scenery - and three brilliant tunnels (which only opened to people in 2011)! Cressbrook Mill from the road following the River Wye, 11th July 2021. This tranquil section of the river was once a place where orphans were subjected to grave acts of inhumanity. Dumped by the so-called Guardians of the Poor, they were used as cheap labour for the rapidly expanding eighteenth-century cotton industry. During the unprecedented expansion of factories, a need arose for cheap and plentiful labour. Sadly sourcing orphans came to be looked on as the answer to the problem of overcrowded workhouses since they offered an almost unlimited cheap labour force to be used by unscrupulous mill owners. Workhouses were paid a premium by the employers for each child so happily persuaded children as young as eight to become apprentices (or rather slaves) to the cotton trade. Some were brought in from workhouses close to Derbyshire, but the bulk of so-called apprentices came from London. Persuaded by the workhouse master that they were joining a useful trade, they signed papers (often with a cross or thumbprint since many were unable to read or write). How much could be understood by any child in this position though begs to be asked. Once set to work, the children were paid an absolute pittance of a few pence a week. Working for fifteen hours a day, their only break was on Sunday when a preacher would read during the last meal of the working day. Cressbrook was originally owned by Sir Richard Arkwright and was later sold to William Newton, a self educated poet and millwright known as the Minstrel of the Peak (who was also head carpenter during the Duke of Devonshire’s building of the crescent in Buxton). Folk lore makes Newton sound like an ideal employer, but reports left by his apprentices later in their lives show they were treated just as badly as those working in nearby Litton. A few from the Monsal trail. Its part of the old Midland railway that was built in 1863 but was closed in 1968 in the Derbyshire peak district. Its 8.5 miles long running from Bakewell to Wye Dale. In the tunnels you can still see the soot from the age of steam and almost imagine the train coming through. The mill is Cressbrook Mill built in 1787. The beautiful Derbyshire Dales in the Peak District region. The trains took me to Derby and from there I managed a cab ride on to Baslow Village where I booked myself in a quaint, quiet farm-house with the smell of haystack, horses and cows moving about. The meadows looked gorgeous and so did the village of Baslow. The nearest town was Bakewell. So I hitched a bus ride to the town and decided to go hire a bicycle and go on the Monsal trail. We found this great buggy friendly circular walk 🍁🍂 The Peak District has lots of amazing trails which is great for families like us with prams/pushchairs/buggies. But like us, many people prefer a circular route instead of walking so far along a trail and then turning around and walking back. We've been in search of buggy friendly circular routes and the lovely Jenny from @peakdistrictkids suggested a potential route from Cressbrook in the Peak District. We started off at Cressbrook Mill and followed the River Wye. The water was so close to us, the path was a little muddy but we had our walking boots and Phil & Teds buggy. The girls loved looking for wildlife, we saw fish coming to the surface and even saw a heron when we got to Litton Mill. From here we crossed the river and took a short steep path up to the Monsal Trail. This is the only section of the walk where you might need a lift with a buggy up the few steps but there's only 10 to get up. The trail was beautiful, full of autum colours and there are two tunnels to walk through - always an exciting bit for kids. The route ended being about 6.5k. Sunday was the day my children wanted to do something different - cycling! We didn’t book our cycle hire but in hindsight we should have done. We were there for opening at half 9 and if we had been any later there wouldn’t have been any. We used Blackwell Mill Cycle Hire at the start of the Monsal Trail which is 9.5 miles of disused railway, which is now a footpath, with various tunnels on the way and runs over from the Wye Valley to Bakewell. It’s pretty flat and has some incredible views. We drove up to the Monsal Head viewpoint first so I could show the girls the trail from above and then drove to the car park at the start of the trail. 9.5 miles there and another 9.5 back is a bloody long way! At the end of the trail, it’s about another half a mile into Bakewell. We did this as I love the riverside area in Bakewell and we ate some lunch / ice creams for a rest. I can’t even describe the pain in my legs and backside the next day after 20 miles of cycling.
