Keeping with the Spanish theme… four wonderful paintings by Swedish artist I B Tollberg (1911–1984). Tollberg originally trained as a pastry chef but after a chance meeting with the Swedish artist and writer Ernst Norlind he became Norlinds studio assistant. Tollberg later moved to Spain and I think this boy must be his son as I have three paintings of him over different years (Pepe Jose) One has sold and these two are available. I have sold a few landscapes by him and these are the two remaining plus a sweet floral. I love his style so much and they seem particularly well framed too! 🙋♀️ Can you relate? The biggest obstacle I've faced in my art journey is the pure and simple need for financial survival which leads me into jobs I've loved and learned a lot from - but that have kept me from making, which is how I feel normal in this world. How I feel okay. I don't mean teaching art - that has only ever inspired and lit me up. I mean the years I've spent in other jobs that have depleted me and left me with little energy to create. And the crazy thing is, that the need to create, and the ideas didn't disappear. They felt like they just kept piling up inside me. ✨ I'm curious, what do you do, and more importantly, what do you LOVE about it?
So many layers of dissatisfaction and frustration are under this playtime experiment. I finally gave up and just started to paint instead of throwing the paper away. Completely intuitive just following the drips and values that were created by washing down the previous four paintings. Forgot to not take myself seriously.

Estos dos últimos pequeños paisajes abstraídos tienen una personalidad algo diferente al resto de la serie, probablemente impuesta por el cambio de soporte. Pintar directamente sobre el lino crudo condiciona desde un principio el resultado e impone un lenguaje más matérico, algo que en mi caso, siendo yo tan tendente a las formas geométricas y planos ausentes de textura, me resulta especialmente interesante. Ya veremos como evoluciona la serie en un futuro . These last two small abstracted landscapes have a somewhat different personality from the rest of the series, probably imposed by the change of medium. Painting directly on the raw linen conditions the result from the beginning and imposes a more material language, something that in my case, being so inclined towards geometric shapes and planes lacking texture, I find especially interesting. What a beautiful afternoon spent painting outside in the sunshine! ⠀ This slate heart has a much more abstract and free flowing feel to it, although I was rather inspired by the colours and imagery around me at the time 🌿🌺 After having spent some time with family who I hadn't seen for a while and enjoying a lovely Italian meal out, I was so ready and in the mood to paint again 🖌 This slate heart just needs to be varnished and will then be finished! ⠀ I have recently worked on so many new acrylic pieces, and I can't wait to share them with you all ♡
Our next featured artist is Alison Price! Alison has a studio with us and will be opening the doors to her creative space during our Creative Spring Market on the Sunday 26th ONLY. Alison's work responds to a sense of wonder of being in the landscape. Her expressive marks help share the sights, sounds and atmosphere of a place. Initially she works quickly on location. Prompted by sketches and found objects she then develops pieces in her studio at Perth Creative Exchange. Drawing is a vital part of her practice and she hosts regular life drawing sessions to hone drawing and observational skills. Expressive mark-making is used to filter the essence of a place into her work and to communicate the energy, light and atmosphere experienced. These intuitive marks evolve in response to playing with colour, materials and surfaces so paintings vary from mixed media layers on wooden panels to ink on delicate Chinese paper. Alongside her art practice she facilitates art sessions for Stroke Rehabilitation patients and for adults in the community. Seeing the benefit of creativity, particularly of drawing, in the recovery of patients is a wonderful experience that she wants to share with others. 🎨 This painting is called River Swimers. It's 24 x 24" acrylic on canvas. I love LOVE swimming and feel like although the reference image was taken while cooling off in a river near Penland School of Craft, it could be anywhere. Usually every summer Trent and I float the river near New Braunfels. It's one of the most relaxing times of my entire year. With nothing to do but chat with our good friends and float along a river, people-watching (there are a lot of floaters!) and enjoying the scenery. I used to float a few rivers in Canada when I was younger. Let me tell you they were NOT as warm! Lol Have you floated a river before?
“Lone Butte Hills” Out here in my neighborhood south of Santa Fe, the winds can be surprisingly strong, especially in the Spring, like it is today! This is how I picture the big, crazy, invisible wind. Also, these little mountains, or big hills, in my neighborhood have been calling to me lately, and I’ve been listening.
