Pentre Ifan 🫶 Finally coming together! There's some tweaks to make before it's framed but there's been phases where I didn't think it'd ever reach this point 😂 The colours in this make me giddy, I love how it's come together 🤩 Pentre Ifan are the amazing remains of an ancient brutal chamber near me in beautiful Pembrokeshire. It's neolithic so about 5000+ years old 🫨 It looks so precarious how the rocks are balanced but it's certainly stood the test of time. It's quite humbling to think about The rock that makes it are bluestone, the same as ones used for Stone Henge, transported 180 miles 5000 years ago!!! Mind boggling! Recently I realised that I've lived in the same house for over 8 years now... and that kind of rocked my world for a moment. I moved house so many times growing up. I remember my mum asking me after one move whether it had sunk in yet. I think she was expecting a big response from me but no, it was just another move. The one that did seem to affect everything for years following, was our Old Farmhouse where I lived from the age of 11 to 19. The longest I'd lived anywhere. I have so many wonderful and tough memories there the place is hugely a part of me. So to reach the same milestone in our house now is quite something. My children are 8 and 3 and this is the only home they've known ❤️🏡 So anyway, here's a picture I made of Pembrokeshire my home for 8+ years and many more to come 🤞😊 Prints will be available to buy very soon 🤩 And a walk from tonight on my favourite beach. I looked up to see gold pouring in my window and dropped everything to grab my camera and capture “Tea in the Garden” IN the garden. Sometimes I don’t fully know what I’m making in the moment or see how it all connects. As I was standing in golden light capturing these, I just started to cry. The first print “Mom Means” was an actual piece of art I made for MY mom circa 2017 for Mother’s Day. The last 3 years this time of year has been hard because my mama beat me to heaven over Mother’s Day 2020. But standing in my garden (which she would love), creating art (she’d love that too), getting ready for a market (which she always tried to get me to do more of), I realized I’m surrounded in so many ways by the best of her. Greif and gratitude can live side by side. And the things that break our hearts can also split us open for more beauty and wonder that we could dare to imagine. And this collection captures that. I should probably wait until I’m close to actually being finished with this brand project… but I love it too much. I call it artist cottage aesthetic meets meadow core. ✨🪻 I haven’t updated my website since 2022 or my shop for that matter… not seriously at least. And things have changed so much it wasn’t even relevant. So I’m in the middle of a huge update that brings wonder front and center and when she launches there are so many new things coming. 👏🏻🎨🖼️📖🫖 Ok now back to art market prep and sleep. @abbygracephoto is the genius behind the images with me and my art supplies in them. She literally captured this before I even knew it existed fully. @katherinebignon also helped me find my style because when I was left to dress myself it was “what? F O U N D A T I O N - 06 Faith has been a huge theme in starting this journey with Vine & Branch. There’s so much to say about it, but I’ll try and keep it short. Faith is about trust. It’s about hope. It’s about love. It’s about a deep conviction that something will happen. I started Vine & Branch probably about a year ago or so, worked on it for months, shelved it, forgot about it, then picked it back up in March of this year… except the Lord had done a lot of work in me over a few months, and that affected my view on business. So I decided to redo my brand strategy and website in about a 2 week span😳 I had faith that where God was leading me was right, and it was good. It was a little crazy to abandon a business plan and website that I had worked on for months (not to mention a corporate job). But I had this feeling that what I had worked on for so long was not going to be successful because it was rooted in pride and selfish ambition. So after praying and rethinking things, I am trusting where the Lord is leading me. And here I am, writing about number 6 of 9 foundational values of Vine & Branch. F O U N D A T I O N - 05 I always said when I was growing up that I’d never waste my life working for a company that I don’t believe in. I just wasn’t built to clock in and clock out at a job I wasn’t passionate about. I’ve definitely enjoyed some jobs, but after about 10 years of various part time, full time, and freelance work, I’ve always come back to the passion I have to build a business from scratch. To create something out of nothing. Maybe it’s the fact that as a kid I loved taking a pile of Legos and turning it into some type of elaborate spaceship. Or that I loved making up stories and turning them into comics that I’d sell for 50¢ a piece. Or that I know deep down I have knowledge and experience to share with other designers, artists, business owners and creative people. Ultimately this passion for creating came from God, the original creator/designer/artist of this universe, and without him, I know Vine & Branch will go nowhere (at least nowhere worth going). F O U N D A T I O N - 04 I believe that with excellence there must also be grace. Holding such a high standard for everything I do is only a setup for burnout and uncontrollable (and unattainable) desire to be “the best.” Grace keeps this in check. The reality is, I will not always produce things that are “the best.” You can bet I will try, but I’m not a machine. I’m just a guy that loves being creative (and being creative just means experimentation). But without grace there’s a constant need to perform and produce, almost formulaic, and YUCK🤢 I’m not about that anymore. Grace is a tough one to grasp because it doesn’t really make sense. To be given something when it’s undeserved is counter cultural. You can’t earn grace. You don’t deserve grace. Half term is over so I'm showing my face again 😊 There's a couple of things I'll be working towards (life/work load permitting as always!) ➡️ Submit work for a miniatures exhibition, nothing bigger than 10cm! F O U N D A T I O N - 01 I heard an artist speak on courage recently in the context of creativity, and it just made so much sense (shout out @jonwhiteart). If I can paraphrase, courage is not like macho invincibility, but more like vulnerability or honesty. There can be at times an element of fear involved in creativity. Fear of failure or fear of not being accepted as “normal,” etc. So to create something that’s truly meaningful is an act of courage. You put yourself out in the world and hope for the best, knowing you could be rejected or misunderstood. Courage is not the absence of fear, it is doing the thing in front of you despite the fear. I poured my heart out on a page today and sent it to almost 11k people on my Substack. It’s a piece I am dang proud of. It held brave vulnerable words ripped from the margins of my story. About honoring our scars instead of hiding them. About finally finding the courage to stand in my story and be seen. When we own our story, we set our creativity free. Welp, this has been in the works off and on for a long time, but it’s finally time to share what I’ve been up to 👀 God has been flipping my life upside down this year and I feel like he is leading me to new places. In order to follow, I’m branching out (no pun intended) with a new business called Vine & Branch.
