Tim Burton’s “The Nightmare Before Christmas” was (and remains) such a unique take on a Christmas movie due to how it combined elements of both Halloween and Christmastime. I guess it only fits then, that the most horror movie-esque production car is rounding off the top of my Christmas list this year. The Cord 810/812 is really a strange thing. They had front wheel drive and pop up headlights in the 1930’s, and were absolutely decades ahead of their time. At the same time, however, Cord was struggling severely due to the Great Depression, and had to cut costs so much that the front and rear doors were interchangeable with eachother, so that they didn’t have to spend money on separate door tools. For a car that had as massive of an identity crisis between futuristic and last-ditch as the Cord did, it’s a miracle that they turned out to be so cool. Aside from a few examples of one-off European coachbuilt cars of the decade, I genuinely do believe the Cords were the prettiest cars of the 1930’s, with no real comparison against them. The coffin-shaped hood was enough to make even Dracula jealous, and the whole entire car just reeks with aeronautical styling. So, should anyone be looking to be generous this year, I think this one had a price tag of $70,000? A 1937 Cord 812 Supercharged Sportsman at the Richmond AACA car show. The Cord was an instant hit on its debut at the 1935 New York Auto Show with its low-slung body and clean lines, featuring a radically new hood design, pop-up headlights, and hidden hinges. It was the first American-designed and built front wheel drive car with independent front suspension. With the Schwitzer-Cummins centrifugal supercharger mated to the 288 c.i . Lycoming V8 engine, the output was increased from 125 hp to 195 hp. This enabled Ab Jenkins to average 101.72 mph for 24 hours on the Bonneville Salt Flats. Hupmobile Skylark 1939 - 1941 This was an unsuccessful attempt by Hupmobile and Graham to build a rear wheel drive version of the Cord 810/812 on a shorter wheelbase. The production four-door sedans were called Hupmobile Skylark and Graham Hollywood respectively. A 115 inch wheelbase was used, 10 inches shorter than that of the original Cord. From cowl back, the production cars were virtually the same as the Cord Westchester sedans. The front end of the cars was designed by John Tjaarda. Plans were made to manufacture two-door phaetons (convertible sedan). In total, Hupmobile built only 319 cars while Graham built 1597 - 1859 cars (according to different sources). Thus, these cars are even more rare than the Cords. Among the stand out features are the "coffin-nose" grille, pop up headlights and engine turned dash. Developed to be the "baby Duesenburg," engineering and financial issues at Auburn-Cord-Duesenberg prevented the car from ever taking off and only 1,066 ever left the assembly line before the company closed.

This time it’s Amelia Earhart’s long lost Cord 812 Convertible Phaeton Sedan. It is car number 33 on the National Historic Vehicle Register. I love the idea of having a historic car on display at the Nations Capital. Displayed perfectly between the U.S. Capitol and the Washington monument making for some eye catching photographs.
