On Sunday we took a little field trip with family up to the @acdmuseum to check out all the amazing automobiles and learn a little history behind them. We purchased the family pass to look through both museums and did a little scavenger hunt along the way. It’s pretty incredible to see the preservation of history and explore the transportation industry from the past and to see how it has evolved over the years.

Cord Westchester sedan, 1936-37 Cord sedan was designed by Gordon Buehrig, as evidenced by the US design patents Des. 97,697 and Des. 99,973. These patents provide a glimpse of the original design. Additionally, the design and operation of the retracting headlights are disclosed in patent 2,119,892, which was issued to Herbert Snow. To create a faithful representation of the original Cord Westchester sedan, my 3D model was based on the original factory drawings (blueprints). These blueprints were generously provided to me by Mr. Josh Malks, a renowned Auburn-Duesenberg-Cord (ACD) historian and author of several books on the subject. After careful review by Josh, several modifications were made to the model based on his expert feedback. Prewar cars are not my cup of tea, honestly. But this one worth a #obscuremonday post, mainly because I had to check in the license plate app to find out what the hell is that, I couldn't even recognise the brand name on the car's badge. It’s a Cord Beverly Sedan, first registered in 1937. If you wonder (like me) where this brand come from, it was a American luxury brand owned by Auburn Automobile Company, founded in 1929, that produced cars discontinuously until 1937, when it closed down. I continue to be amazed at how certain cars end up on the other side of the pond (in both directions). Two icons of 1930s American car design from the same company, Auburn Automobile Company, and the same chief designer, the legendary Gordon Buehrig, at the @museoautomovilisticoydelamoda . The first two pictures are two versions of the revolutionary Cord 810/812, famous for its front-wheel drive configuration and its advanced design that featured hiding headlights and a grille-less front, known as the “coffin nose”. As I saw the red convertible at the museum I was surprised at how compact it actually was and I was glad the museum didn’t put any barriers around it, so I was able to take in this unique design from up close and from all angles; quite a treat. Cord prototype E306, 1935 Five E306 prototypes were built by the Auburn Automobile Company. This was the further development of the "baby Duesenberg" concept. The E306 were later manufactured in the form of Cord 810 (1936) and Cord 812 (1937). The E306 prototypes were different from the production Cord sedans. Design patent, Des. 97,697 (USD97697), granted to Gordon Buehrig presents the design of the E306 prototype. The distinct exterior difference is the design and placement of the retractable headlamps. Also, the windshield and the rear window areas were increased on the production car. One of the first prototypes had grill-louvers made of stainless steel. The "Coppertone Cord" shown here is the only E306 known to survive. The car, restored by Dr. Paul Bryant, is painted "burnt sienna" and has grill-louvers, wheels, handles, etc. copper-plated. With this final set of shots from the Auburn Boattail Speedster I wish to draw your attention to the “Flying Lady” ornament that graces the hood of the car. As a gift just a few years ago, my father presented me with one of these very ornaments that he mounted on a base such that it could be displayed with the elegance it deserves. His words to me were something like this: “Nick, if you ever need money take this thing apart. Brush the patina off, have the pitting filled in, have it chrome plated and you’ll be able to sell it for $1,000 easily.” While this may be true, it is one of my most prized possessions and I will never part ways with it. Auburn “Boattail” Speedster 851 Supercharged, a true gentleman’s motorcar! - The Auburn speedster was produced by the Auburn Automobile Company, based out of Auburn, Illinois from 1924 to 1937. It was considered one of the most innovative and advanced vehicles of its era. A designer by the name of Gordon Buehrig is responsible for these stunning curves as well at the tapered rear, earning the car the nickname “boattail”. This Speedster 851 variant was produced from 1934 until 1937. The 150hp supercharged 4.5 liter straight-8 engine was able to propel this car to a whopping 100 miles per hour. Errett Lobban Cord was born on July 20, 1894 and is regarded as one of the key figures of the American automotive industry in the 1920s and 1930s. The Auburn Automobile Company he controlled produced Auburn, Duesenberg and Cord automobiles. The Cord 810/812 series introduced in 1936, was a special car for its time. By using front-wheel drive it was possible to use a lower and different shape for the nose, so that the car, unlike its contemporaries, did not have an upright radiator grille. The 810/812 series therefore has a very recognizable appearance. Due to the aftermath of the financial crisis of the 1930s, the Auburn Automobile Company ceased its car production in 1937, which also meant the end of the Cord brand. 1932 Auburn 8-100 Boattail Speedster This Speedster will be presented at the Car Collection Steim in Schramberg in the Black Forest in Germany. K.E. Stant had the "winged man" with sharp contours and smooth surfaces designed as a hood ornament. The wings receding backwards are a design feature of the Art Deco era that can be observed again and again. This figure was used by Auburn in the period 1931-1934. A different type of #tbt. I’m also a big rail buff. These tracks once belonged to the New York Central Railroad and was part of the incredible automotive industry of Auburn’s past. Now they are just a small spur serving a few factories and dead end just 100 yards in the background. This was one of three lines that met at Auburn Junction. Only one remains and is still of the original B&O heritage with CSX. Also a fun fact, the small town of Garrett nearby was named after the B&O president at the time and once built steam locomotives. A small yard still remains and if you know where to look, you can still find remnants of the old locomotive factories. We are excited to announce that we have acquired a 1937 Supercharged Cord 812 finished in a stunning deep Geneva Blue.The Cord division of the Auburn Automobile Company was introduced in 1929 and was the first American auto manufacturer to introduce front-wheel drive on their Model L-29 that same year. The Cord 812 (and prior year 810) was a short-lived front wheel drive luxury car produced by Cord from 1936 to 1937. Less than 3,000 Cords were produced those two model years, with the Cord 812 two-door Cabriolet the rarest model with just 195 being produced between the two years. The art-deco body style is the work of Duesenberg designer Gordon Buehrig and features a “coffin-nose” hood with striking wraparound louvers, pontoon fenders and on supercharged models such as this one, racy exposed exhaust pipes. The overall design is so stunning that it is one of the few automobiles deemed worthy of including in the Museum of Modern Art in New York. This sporty two door cabriolet version is appropriately known as the Sportsman model among Cord enthusiasts and is the recipient of a detailed professional restoration by Clayton Restorations of Castle Rock, Colorado. Powered by a Lycoming V-8 engine mated with the optional Schwitzer-Cummins centrifugal supercharger this car puts out an impressive 170 hp that can reach speeds up to 110 mph. The car’s supercharged performance is undeniable and was one of the fastest cars in the world during the pre-war time period. The transmission is a four-speed manual, shifted by a unique “electric-hand” pre-selector switch mounted on the steering column. The turned-metal dash makes an impressive backdrop for the array of gauges, including individual hand cranks used to operate the concealed headlamps, also an industry first in automotive design.
