Ford Australia's '34 coupe utility, or 'ute' in Australian speak was not the first vehicle with separate compartments for passengers and freight. In the 1920's, several North American manufacturers had produced vehicles with timber trays instead of rear passenger seats and bodywork - whereas the Ford utility had it's freight carrying section intergrated into the vehicle design, and a sported a front end resembling the sedan. When people did cars right in the 30s, they really did them right. This Art Deco masterpiece is a 1935 ‘Avions Voisin C28 Aérosport’, and I think it’s fabulous. Built by French aeroplane fanatic Gabriel Voisin, who after the Great War understood that the decline in aeroplane production meant that his company needed to take a new direction, set out to make cars as best as possible. Using his aircraft design knowledge, he created the gorgeous, wing-shaped lines of what came to be called the ‘Aérosport’ – the technique was an early atempt at downforce, which worked at pushing the car down at high speed, giving better stability. Furthermore, the C28 was light, made if aluminium, and for the time considered very quiet. It used a 3,3 litre Daimler engine, putting out 102 horsepower, meaning it could cost along comfortably at a good 140 km/h. It was fitted with a four-speed epicyclic pre-selector transmission with overdrive, making it much easier to drive than most cars from the era, with their ‘crash’ gearboxes – here, no double-clutching was needed. Unfortunately, this came at a price; the Avions Voisins tended to be more expensive than the similar cars of Bugatti, and in the great depression, it was difficult to get the orders in. Then came the Second World War, effectively killing any chance for the movie star-looking car to become as famous as the Hollywood actors it was made for. This particular car is believed to have been one of six C28:s, and the one shown at the Paris Auto Salon in 1935. It has been faithfully restored using original blueprints, and has a new upholstery of tan leather by no other than Hermes. 1938 Brooklands MG. The following is a transcript of the owner’s display notice - Just before WW2, the MG factory produced less than 10 road/racing cars based on the then new TA chassis, engine, brakes and transmission. These cars were raced furiously in the few remaining years before War broke out, mainly in Europe. As far as is known, none of these cars survived the War. Nearly 25 years ago, an MG enthusiast, who had owned a 1938 TA chassis for many years, decided to recreate one of these lost cars using original MG parts from the pre-war period. The main problem was recreating the racing body which was a work of art. It took several restorers and MG Panel Specialists the best part of ten years, financed by four different owners, to complete the task. The MPJG engine has a lightened flywheel, competition clutch, steel crank with matching rods and pistons and a Laystall cylinder head. The exhaust manifold is a rare original. The car also has an aluminium radiator, alloy brake drums, wrapped suspension, a 4:1 rear axle ratio and original TA four speed gearbox. The pale body is in pre-war racing colours with the identity stripes in burgundy. All the decals are hand painted, including the number plates. Here we have a lovely little 1939 Standard Flying 8 being collected. The owner has had the car for many years but not been able to drive it recently since it would not start and when it did start it was unreliable. He had met the owner of the Z van we worked on last year who said how great it was that his van ran really well and he was finally enjoying getting out with it. The Standard customer was looking for "the same experience" with his car. There were lots of small issues which added together to give the reliability problems. We overhauled the distributor as the points gap closed on one lobe due to to wear and there were electrical feed issues to the distributor, too. The acorn nuts were the wrong way round so the short one was in the position for the long one meaning no contact. We also dealt with numerous other electrical faults. A number of the control mechanisms had to be freed off since they were semi-seized, and we fitted a new brake cable as well as having the brakes relined. When the wheels had been painted, many years ago, the reverse sides were left as bare metal, so we rubbed them down, painted them in primer and blue to protect them before fitting four new tyres. The stator tube was too short so needed to be extended and the driver's seat frame was broken so we stripped the seat down and repaired it. Finally the hood mounting point had rotten wood, so we replaced this which allowed the hood to be closed properly. My little J2 has been off the road since 2nd November - nothing serious, just a faulty tachometer which needed to be rebuilt. The issue has been finding the right person to do it, a problem solved after a couple of false starts by using the brilliant Dr Mike Flannery of Flannery Restoration. Patience is however a virtue, indeed it’s a necessity when maintaining or restoring a 90 year old car. Today was therefore the first drive for 6 months and we went up hill and over dale in a joyous journey that made me smile from ear to ear. Goodness I have missed her. The car brand Marquette was produced by GM and intended to be a somewhat simpler and more affordable Buick. This didnt work out partly because Marquette ended up selling at the expense of the GM-brand well established under Buick, -Oldsmobile. As a result production of Marquette closed down after only one year, -1930. This makes surviving Marquettes a very rare sight indeed. Ferdinand Porsche, Alman tasarımcılar Hans Ledwinka ve Erich Übelacker’in kalemlerinden çıkan Tatra 87’ye öykünmüş ve koskoca VW, Çekoslovak firma tarafından tasarım hırsızlığıyla suçlanarak dava dahi edilmiştir. 1930lu yılların yarış otomobillerinde oldukça yaygın bir trend olan ultra aerodinamik yuvarlak hatların hakim olduğu “Streamline” ekolüne tabi olan Tatra 87, aerodinamik tasarımı kadar arka konumlandırılan hava soğutmalı motoruyla da VW Beetle’a örnek olmuştur. Yalnız VW’de ufak hacimli Boxer motor kullanılırken Tatra’nın arka kısmında 3 litrelik bir V8 motor bulunmaktaydı. 85 HP güç veren üstten egzantrikli hava ile soğutulan V8 motoru ve üretildiği 1930lu ve 40lı yılları bırakın, günümüz için bile etkileyici bir rakam olan 0.36cw’lik aerodinamik katsayısı sayesinde 160kms’lik bir Azami Hıza ve yine üretildiği dönem için muazzam etkileyici bir değer olan 100km’de 12.5 litrelik yakıt tüketim ortalamasıyla zamanın (çok) ötesinde bir otomobil olduğunu dünya aleme ilan ediyordu Tatra 87. My 397th carspot is this 1930 Ford Model A 3.9L petrol (ZV 17964) this being an import reg for Co. Clare. I spotted this car at Cars and Coffee in Limerick and it's a German import. This car was turned into a hotrod in 2018 I think from a standard Model A I think the owner said which I think ruined it originality is key when it comes to vintage cars especially when they're as old as this one. Underneath all of the paint is a 1939 Cadillac Series 60 Special Sedan. This was a derivative of the Cadillac Series 60, and was a joint styling effort between Harley Earl and a young Bill Mitchell. Debuting in 1938, it was an immediate sales success for Cadillac, with the formal roof profile and smooth body panels. This car was an early indicator of young Bill Mitchell’s talents as an automotive designer, and he eventually succeeded Earl as GM VP, Styling Section in December 1958.
