I think that something we all underestimate in appreciation of storytelling and creative expression is the community feel that enriches the experience. Namely, being able to exchange creative expression with each other, not just make it for profit or to promote ourselves. Sure, this already exists with fanfiction platforms and such. But I aim to launch this campaign with a different vibe; that being communal, high quality, and not tainted with the low-brow associations of low-quality fan-based works. There won't be a question of what's canon and what isn't; each artwork will be treated as a faithful artistic interpretation as worthy and real as the work it is derived from. Because, in the fictional world of retconning and reinterpretations, nothing is written in stone, and barriers are meant to be broken. With concern for copyright law, this is a non-profit campaign, and any curations for material not in the public domain (with some exceptions) will be charged for a token fee. The original work and artist(s) will be appropriately credited. However, I felt like I needed to read something that would perk me up at least a little bit over this festive season. Both books did manage to help with that to some degree. Although in parts, Christmas Miracles at Hedgehog Hollow reminded me of why it is that I prefer animals to people. With one being a bit of a romance read and the other to do with love, friendship, family, and community. And the Mountains Echoed by Khaled Hosseini Huge fan of Hosseini’s novels: Kite Runner changed my teaching to include the needed stories of refugees and the cultures of the Middle East. Every book written by Hosseini walks the tightrope of reality and fiction. Hosseini is a master storyteller and he gives us an insight to the lives of people living in a place we know too little about. He creates the human side of pain and suffering for the people in Afghanistan and helps us, the reader relate and empathize with them as well. All this is masterfully done by Hosseini who too immigrated to the United States and became a doctor. Side note: He wrote his first book at the hospital before and after he saw patients as a refuge from the long days of practicing medicine. Abdullah and Pari, siblings love each other more than anything. And yet their father, determined to do what he believes is right, sells off his children, destroying the family bond. We see these children grow, move and adapt to their new lives as they cross continents to then have to choose what is right and help Afghanistan or stay in the United States.
