💫The last one is more common than you think. ⭐️ SLPs & CDAs, this post is for YOU! We play an important role in a child’s communication journey, and we should be equipped on how to support parents/caregivers in doing home practice. Here’s what you can do: 1️⃣ Emphasize that home practice is short and sweet, no more than 5-10 minutes a day. 2️⃣ Ask the parent/caregiver what activities they have at home, and shape your sessions using these. If you don’t have the specific activity they mention, be creative! Tell the parent how to extrapolate what they did in the session in the home environment. 3️⃣ Talk to the child and parent/caregiver about what helps them remember. Encourage them to use this system to set up reminders for home practice. 4️⃣ Evaluate if the child and/or parent/caregiver is ready for home practice and consider ways in which you can get them ready. This may include adapting how often home practice is done; instead of everyday, perhaps every week. 5️⃣ Given the shift to parent-centered care, we acknowledge that parents/caregivers know their child best. This does not, however, mean that they wouldn’t benefit from coaching and guidance on how to get their child to achieve their goals. This is where incorporating the parent into the session and providing opportunities for them to learn and make mistakes becomes SO important. "What is Your Why": research and education goes hand in hand! I was always curious about language development. When my high school guidance counselor asked me what I wanted to study in university, I told him "Linguistics". I remember him telling me "oh, there's no other courses you can take in highschool to prepare for that field". Determined, I looked on Google and at the library for resources about language development. My journey was just beginning! I quickly found out that even if you build your knowledge, you also need to strengthen your application of what you know, which is why I went onto get more training and hands on experience in research labs, community settings and classrooms.
