It’s always kind of weird to cover the heads of protagonists on paintings who have lost their heads in real life, as in the case of this gentleman with the luxuriant hair. But anyone who knows my work here can surely understand that I was very interested in this portrait from the fabulous collection of the @museecarnavalet in Paris. His robe with the floral patterns actually comes from a military tradition and dates back to a time when floral embroidery was still desirable on men (which later became strangely unmanly). I also love the pompom on his huge precious lace collar. Flower embroidery, flowing hair and lace pompom together create a kind of sweet overall image (at least from today’s point of view) and actually show the desire for representation of an aristocratic class. I tried to take this to the extreme with a mask and heart-shaped cutout, which is of course meant very ironically. Because he started a very un-sweet military fight with the famous Cardinal Richelieu, lost this dispute and subsequently also his head. And gone was his glory. . For centuries, they held a lot of power in the church, but also in secular society. And they wanted to show that. For this purpose, art has always been very suitable (this is still the case today). However, cardinals were sometimes quite shady in this double function. Ambitious, vain, brutal, ruthless. This is already not nice in the secular world, but in connection with the ideals of a church all the weirder. It is one of the peculiarities of our world that some of the most extraordinary and touching works of art would not exist without these dubious characters. In my work I try to point out these paradoxes in the art world, sometimes I cover cardinals completely under their flashy working clothes, but here I wanted to emphasize the very ambiguity in the role of these men. The portrait is an absolutely perfect depiction of that time. The white muslin dress is the latest fashion (Marie Antoinette's taste is greeting), she's relaxed and almost private on a luxurious sofa, and the whole portrait breathes the attitude of a privileged young lady. And, OMG, she is reading a book. This attribute on paintings was for a long time the only way for women to indicate their education or even their intellectual esprit. The world is truly scary enough, but as a good tradition, I share one of my “classic sheet ghosts” here. This one is based on an original by Franz X. Winterhalter from the collection meteuropeanpaintings Winterhalter (unfortunately almost forgotten today) was an amazingly successful portraitist of the 19th century. He was not only an incredibly good painter, but also very charming in the salons. That helped 😉 And he painted very quickly (the pleasantly short portrait sessions were very much appreciated) and very important: all the sitters were transformed by his art into desirable beauties. Even if the preconditions were not the most ideal (to put it that way). So royalty, nobility and all who could afford it queued up to be painted by him. It was ironic fun for me to turn this fashionable dressed beauty into a Halloween ghost with a sheet. I even changed the title of her book (not very subtly titled “Poetry”) into “Crime”. She really is a beautifully wrapped gift. I love this painting from the fabulous collection meteuropeanpaintings painted by the amazing Elisabeth Vigée Le Brun.
