When a mother suspects her membrane sac has ruptured (“waters broke”) midwives can perform a Ferning Test. We take some beautiful cervical mucus place it on a slide and look at it under the microscope. If the formation of amniotic fluid makes a fern like structure we can confirm membranes have ruptured. The crystallization is due to an increased concentration of protein and electrolytes within the amniotic fluid. There can be false positives if there is sperm or blood pooling in vagina. Also if a woman wants to see her fertility “ferning cell formations” also arise during ovulation. Cuando una madre sospecha que su bolsa membrana se ha roto ("rompió fuente"), las parteras pueden realizar una prueba de Helecho. Tomamos un hermoso moco cervical, lo colocamos en un portaobjetos de vidrio y lo miramos bajo el microscopio. Si la formación de líquido amniótico forma una estructura parecida a un helecho, podemos confirmar que las membranas se han roto. La cristalización se debe a una mayor concentración de proteínas y electrolitos dentro del líquido amniótico. puede haber falsos positivos si hay acumulación de esperma en la vagina . Your cervix is not a crystal ball. 🔮 Did you know cervical dilation is not the only way to progress during labor? 🔮 There are actually 6 different ways you and your baby work together to bring them earthside. 🔮 Dilation is the just one. 🔮 Your cervix also ripens, or gets softer. 🔮 And it effaces, or gets thinner. 🔮 It also moves forward. 🔮 Your baby helps by continuing to move as well, called rotation. 🔮 And they descend into your pelvis before and during labor. 🔮 So when you hear a number I want you to remember, "this is one of six ways, I AM MAKING PROGRESS." 🔮 When I say, "your cervix is not a crystal ball," i mean there is no magic number. 🔮 Dont let a number get you down. 🔮 Focus on working WITH your baby to continue to make progress. 🔮 And decline the next check if you dont want it. 🔮 Did you know you can decline cervical checks in labor? 🔮 As my client I will help you to feel confident declining interventions and checks you arent ready for.
