I saw my first bumblebee of 2024 in the backyard yesterday. It was huge and trying to collect pollen from micro flowers that grew close to the ground, so it was mostly under the grass, making a decent shot difficult. When I finally dropped to my knees and tried to get in closer, it flew off. But I took the opportunity to photograph some of the mini and micro flowers. This one, Cerastium fontanum, also called mouse-ear chickweed, common mouse-ear, or starweed, is native to Europe. Its has tear-shaped hairy leaves that grow in a star pattern and small white flowers. This perennial often forms a dense mat in lawns and spreads horizontally along the ground via the formation of roots wherever the stem falls over and contacts the ground. Seeing this, with its petals only a bit notched and the stems hairy all over, made me realise I was wrong about a plant I see a few weeks ago - that one must be a stitchwort or chickweed but definitely isn't mouse-ear chickweed. Common Chickweed (Cerastium fontanum). These are native to Europe. Wikipedia says this teeny tiny flower is also called Mouse-ear Chickweed or Starweed. I like something about the name Starweed, so I tend to use that one. The plants in this photo were growing in a cluster beside a house, but in the past I've found them often sprouting up between bricks and patio stones, so they don't seem too picky about where they grow. Cette plante poilue, de la famille des Caryophyllacées, a 5 pétales fendues au sommet, pouvant laisser à penser qu’elles en possèdent 10. Elle est très répandue et commune en métropole, et s’est introduite dans plusieurs départements et territoire d’outre-mer. Today was an incredible day to be outside. I chose to get out in my yard and get to work on gathering some very specific plants before giving the lawn its first cut of the season. These plants, when in the right hands, can be transformed into teas, salves, poultices, tinctures, ointments, stews and salads. It was hard to take my eyes off the burning orange sky on this evening’s dog walk, but when I did drag my eyes to the ground, I happily noticed Mouse-ear Chickweed is really prolific in the arable fields at the moment! It is in prime picking condition right now before it starts putting its energy towards flowering and is exceptionally nutritious, with numerous health benefits and medicinal applications. It’s one to keep your eyes out for on ploughed farmland, wasteland & in meadows. In my experience it often grows in the same location as you might find Pineapple Weed later in the year, as they enjoy the same terrain. It can taste a little furry, I personally don’t notice that once I use the tips tossed in dressing in a mixed leaf wild salad, but if you find that off-putting, just add a few handfuls into your favourite sauteed buttered greens a minute before the end of cooking, both approaches will give you delicious earthy flavour & a health kick as it provides super iron, calcium and vitamin C content in particular. Mouse-ear can easily be substituted into my favourite Common Chickweed dinner recipe: Ravioli with decadent rehydrated Autumn Cep mushrooms I picked in local ancient woodland (UK Porcini) & UK Summer Truffle stuffing, in a white wine & Tarragon cream, garnished with Chickweed, topped with plenty of black pepper and Parmagiano Reggiano of course! The Chickweed works so well with the earthiness of this dish, even just as a garnish, it makes all the difference and is capable of really standing up to the other ingredients despite their boldness, it rounds off the flavour profile of the dish perfectly, indulgent & delicious!
