Want to improve your financial situation? Here are six financial dos and don’ts to guide you toward a brighter financial future: ✅ Protect yourself and your loved ones with insurance: Insurance provides peace of mind and financial security. Prioritize life, critical illness, disability, and health coverage to protect you and your family’s financial well-being against life’s uncertainties. ❌ Don’t neglect saving for your retirement: Start saving early and consistently. Explore and begin contributing to accounts that maximize tax advantages to build a sufficient nest egg for retirement. Don't let the perception of retirement being far away hinder your progress. ✅ Build an emergency fund: Ensure you have a robust emergency fund to cover unexpected expenses like medical emergencies, repairs, or job loss. ❌ Don’t accumulate high-interest debt: Avoid high-interest debt on credit cards or loans whenever possible. High-interest debt can become a significant roadblock on your path to financial freedom. ✅ Create a budget + track your cash flow: Take control of your finances by creating a clear budget and tracking your income and expenses. ❌ Don’t neglect your financial education: Invest in your financial literacy to make informed decisions about your finances and become your own money manager. Major changes have occurred in the short term rental industry in BC 💫 New rules for short-term rentals are now in effect across 60 BC communities, with 17 more joining later this year. These regulations, announced by Premier David Eby and Housing Minister Ravi Kahlon, aim to balance housing availability while supporting short-term rentals. The move has also been detrimental for short term rental owners, as some are losing their source of business and passive income. Key changes include limiting rentals to a homeowner's principal residence plus one secondary suite, displaying business licenses on platforms, and enhanced data sharing for enforcement. For an alternative retirement plan or method of passive income, consider investing in a pool of residential real estate across Western Canada, managed by our expert team. Imagine you're a homeowner who's paid a significant portion of your mortgage, building 'equity' in your home. 🏠 Equity is the difference between your home's value and what you still owe on your mortgage—it's essentially the part of your home you truly "own." As you get older, if you need extra cash for living expenses, helping out family, or any other reason, a reverse mortgage can be a helpful option. 🔄💰 It's a special kind of loan that lets you convert some of your equity into cash without selling your home or making regular loan payments. Here's how it works: ▶️ Stay in your home: You don't have to move; you continue living in your home. ▶️ No regular payments: You don't make monthly payments. The loan is due when you no longer live in the house. ▶️ Get the cash: You can take the money as a lump sum, set up regular payments, or a combination of both. ▶️ Interest accumulates: Interest will add up over time, but you don't have to worry about it until later. This means the amount owed can grow. ▶️ Pay back later: The loan and interest are paid back when you sell the home, move out, or in the event of your passing, usually through the home's sale proceeds. Keep in mind, a reverse mortgage means you're slow-selling the part of your home you own, which can affect your estate and the value you can pass on to your family. 🤔 Considering this or need more details on how it might affect you? Feel free to send us a direct message. 📩 . #mortgagebroker #mortgageassistance #canadianfinance #residentialproperty #mortgagebanker #mybrokerpro #mocobrokers #mortgageprocess #privatelender #mortgage101 #mortgagefreecommunity #reversemortgage #mortgagecanada #mortgageoptions #realestatecanada #mortgagerates #homeequity

Interest Rates: Not Just a Numbers Game In recent remarks before the House of Commons finance committee, Bank of Canada Governor Tiff Macklem emphasized the nuanced approach Canada takes regarding its interest rates. While they don't necessarily align with U.S. or global rates, Macklem underscored the importance of maintaining a reasonable proximity. This stance is not arbitrary. As highlighted by BMO chief economist Douglas Porter, significant disparities could trigger adverse effects, particularly on the Canadian dollar. Such scenarios could escalate trade disruptions, especially with the United States, our largest trading partner. With regard to monetary policy, anticipation mounts for potential rate adjustments by the Bank of Canada, juxtaposed with the cautious stance of the U.S. Federal Reserve. Macklem's observations on inflation trends hint at forthcoming adjustments, but with caution. While Canada may contemplate independent actions, prudent synchronization with the Federal Reserve is pivotal to mitigate undue currency volatility. As the economic landscape evolves, vigilance remains key. 🤔Are the Big 6 Banks all they're cracked up to be? Or are there better options? Depending on what your needs are... there are better options. 🏦The Big 6 Banks have the largest net worth & control 90% of the market. That means they hold a bit of a monopoly over the banking industry and make no mistake, they are a BIG business. Are they really here to help YOU better your financial future? Or is their job to better THEIR financial future? (Using your money) 💰The fact is, we have put a lot of trust in big banks because it's all we've ever really known. We've gone to them to hold our savings, invest in our retirement, we use them to obtain our mortgages and get our credits cards from them. It's "normal" for us to bank with them. But in a world of mediocre customer service, low-interest rates on savings accounts, expensive investments & fees on anything and everything, online banks are fast becoming a popular banking alternative for those looking for something better. 🤷‍♀️𝐖𝐇𝐘? Convenience, no monthly or ATM fees, competitive interest rates, better customer service & perks! Plus, your deposits up to $100,000 are protected by the CDIC just like they are with the Big 6 Banks! Take @eqbank for example. It offers cashback on spending using your bank card, no FOREX charges on their Mastercard when used internationally and you could earn a bonus interest rate of 4.00%.🙌 🔗 Link in my bio if you want $25 to open up an EQ Bank account! Will online banks solve all of your banking needs? It depends on your needs. But they do solve some of our problems (ie high fees) & I highly recommend you look into them to find out which will earn you more AND save you more! 👉Who do you currently bank with? Any online? Which of the Big 6?

They don't teach you this in school but negotiating with your employer is key. Honing my negotiating skills has been key to my career growth and salary increase. 🔑 When I first graduated university in 2019, I only earned 42K pre-tax in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Flash forward today, I'm earning more than x4 that amount (but I also live in a more expensive city!) 📈 On top of that, I managed to get my employer and freelance client to pay for memberships and courses that will help improve my skills expand my network. After all, it also benefits them. 👩‍🎓 I also have my benefits covered (even when I was freelancing) and anything work related such as WFH office set up. I also managed to expense co-working sessions through negotiation. 💻 This year, I also negotiated for a sign-on bonus with my new role. I ended up with two offers and asked both companies what they could do. The sign-on bonus was a great offer compared to increased vacation time for me.💰 The company offering the sign-on offer also had unlimited PTO! The sign-on offer also covered whatever bonus I missed out on in my first year since employees only get bonuses after their first year at my current workplace. 💸 If you don't ask for it, you won't know! Look at all things I managed to get covered by my company & client! Never be afraid to negotiate. Know your worth, and make sure they pay you what they owe you! 😎😎 #careergrowth #careergrowthtips #salarynegotiation #salarynegotiations #personalfinance #personalfinanceforwomen #paymewhatyouoweme #canadianfinance #workingwomen #ladiesgetpaid #letsgetpaid #getthatbread

Apparently, Gen Z is richer than you think 💸 According to The Economist, Gen Z is wealthier than previous generations were at the same age. However, Gen Z Canadians still face financial concerns similar to those of past generations, such as affordability of homes and cars. Nevertheless, platforms like TikTok and Instagram are aiding them in developing financial acumen. Approximately 80% of Canadian teenagers are confident in managing money, with 64% already saving for the future. Their achievements can also be attributed to favorable timing; they entered the job market during a period of historically low youth unemployment, unlike many Millennials who dealt with an economy recovering from the global financial crisis. Additionally, their approach to work differs as they anticipate higher starting salaries, more frequent salary increases, and prioritize flexibility and work-life balance. Have you considered the tax implications of leaving or being let go from your job? It's crucial to understand how different payments are treated for tax purposes. Here's a breakdown: 1️⃣ Continuation of Salary: If your employer extends your salary during a notice period, it's taxed like regular employment income, with the same withholding at source. 2️⃣ Severance Payment: Whether offered by the employer, settled in a lawsuit, or awarded by the court, it falls under the definition of a "retiring allowance" and is taxable. However, there are strategies to minimize tax burdens: 💰 RRSP Transfer: Part of the retiring allowance can be transferred to your RRSP, reducing immediate tax obligations. 🚫 Non-Taxable Portions: A portion of the award allocated to damages for mental distress, defamation, or human rights violations might be non-taxable. ⚖️ Punitive or Exemplary Damages: In severe cases of employer wrongdoing, a portion of the award classified as punitive or exemplary damages may be non-taxable. 📝 Legal Expenses: Amounts paid to cover legal fees are not taxable, reducing the taxable portion of the settlement. 🤝 Non-Taxable Benefits: Re-employment or retirement counselling services provided by the employer are non-taxable. Tax planning from the outset is crucial. Waiting until the settlement is imminent may limit options so understanding the tax implications is important. 🚨🚨🚨 RRSP 🚨🚨🚨 A lot of you asked about this. I know we’ve been taught to save for retirement in the RRSP account. But they never gave us the education about what happens to your money and how to reap the benefits (ie: keep most of the money while paying the least amount of taxes on it) Repeat after me: 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐑𝐑𝐒𝐏 𝐰𝐚𝐬 𝐜𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐛𝐲 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐠𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐅𝐎𝐑 𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐆𝐎𝐕𝐄𝐑𝐍𝐌𝐄𝐍𝐓 👀 The RRSP can be a good tool (esp if you’re getting employer matches) - but you must learn how to keep most of your money - how to withdraw it properly so you don’t end up making the Canadian government your beneficiary 🥹 The RRSP can be beneficial, but for most people, a TFSA is a better choice tax wise. If you’re maxed out on the TFSA, then that’s when I would use the RRSP - and if it dropped someone down a tax bracket and saved them significantly. And if you got employer matches. HOWEVER - you have to learn how to meltdown (withdraw) out of your RRSP properly in the most tax efficient way. If you die and you have a significant amount in there - the gov will tax the entire amount as income at whatever tax bracket it happens to land in. IMAGINE GIFTING THE GOV 50% of your retirement funds 🤮 Swipe ➡️ to see 👀 FINANCIAL PLANNING IS KEY. 5 Money Habits That Changed my Life💰🔁 ▪️Split the rent - This simple hack saved me thousands of dollars in rent that went to other things. With the cost of rent so high these days it may be better to have roommates than put the whole burden on yourself. ▪️Income is never enough - Think about what could happen if you lose your source of income? Saving and investing will take you from financial stability to financial independence. ▪️Live within your means - Never spend money in advance anticipating an income. Use credit cards only as means of payments and not free money or loan. If you’re struggling with credit card debt, it’s time to put away the card and start paying with debit. ▪️Invest in yourself - When you do this you improve your income potential which has ripple effect in helping you save + invest more. ▪️Maximize your time - it’s okay to unwind with social media or TV but don’t get caught wasting countless unproductive hours. Be mindful of your time. Time is money! These tips helped improve my finances in my 20s and I believe they can help you too. What other habits have helped you improve your finances too?👇🏽

This is my net worth today! I'll be tracking my net worth quarterly to make sure I'm on track to a net worth of $1M by 32 and $250K by the end of the year. I might reach it before then or after. Either way, I'd like to keep these goals and see how they go these few years! For this total, I've calculated all of my: 💵 Down payment deposits 💵 Savings in Canada 💵 Investments in Canada + US but converted everything to CAD I only calculate my Canadian banking because it's where I've truly made my own money. I am excited to grow this net worth this year! On another note... the stock market is so bullish now with earning reports season. I'm excited to see how RDDT, PLTR, DIS & AXON performs. PLTR could be in the S&P 500... are there any stocks that's keeping you on your toes? #stocks #stockstowatch #canadianfinance #canadianfinancetips #canadastocks #stockmarket #stockmarketeducation #stockmarketinvesting #networthtracking #networth #personalfinanceforwomen #ninimomoney

Hey everyone 👋 it’s already been one week into May, which means it’s time to think about budget! To start with, I look at my sources of income. Here’s a breakdown! 💰9-5 PMM (main stable source) 💰Freelance writing & content projects (quite stable so far, but I’m not counting on it - also paid in USD but converted to CAD to simplify given the other sections are in CAD) 💰Petsitting and housesitting has been a great way to earn a little extra. I work from home so this suits me too. 💰I am trying some new strategies with swing trading. My goal is to hit 2K here eventually with stocks. As for the HISA bonuses and interest, I signed up for a HISA with Simplii and got a bonus of CAD 400. The promotional rate was 6% for six months. I also earned 4% interest with my HISAs at Neo and Wealthsimple. Even though it’s the same rate, I have separate accounts for different purposes! They’re emergency fund and investing ☺️ I have a big emergency fund now since I’m about to own my first apartment and we all know Vancouver is crazy expensive 💸💸💸 In total, my May 2024 income is CAD 14,014.95. I already allocated some away for a course and I'm thinking about a mountaineering course... I'll share some budget updates soon! #finance #womeninfinance #financeliteracy #financetips #canadianfinance #canadianfinancetips #personalfinance

Hi everyone! 👋 I'm a 28 year old gal from Singapore, who grew up in Malaysia + UK and currently living in Vancouver, Canada. I am a 9-5 content + product marketing manager who wants to become more financially literate & savvy and share that journey with you. I graduated debt-free from university with a BA in Economics as an international student. I am privileged to have parents who can afford and want to invest in my education. I am very, very grateful for that. Thank you, mum and dad! ❤️ Growing up, my mum emphasized that money is scarce even though we grew up in a comfortable home. My dad was the opposite which made it confusing. I'm trying to change my mindset from scarcity to abundance. However, that also meant that I learned how to save well from a young age. Historically, my parents are in healthcare, and only really invested in property in Singapore, Malaysia, and Australia so the stock market and Canadian finance is very new to me! My goal here? To have a healthier financial mindset instead of feeling guilty and make my money grow for me even more, beyond budgeting. Let's do it together? 👯‍♀️🤝 #financeliteracy #budgetjournal #financejourney #vancouver #canadafinance #canadianfinance #financegoals #vancouverfinancetips #ninimo$

" A budget is telling your money where to go instead of wondering where it went." -John C. Maxwell Learning how to manage your money is one of the most important life skills. Budgeting every month to track where your money goes before using it all is a really important step to achieve financial stability and freedom in the future.

Hi fellow Canadian, finally, the weather is getting more pleasant, and suddenly everything looks green outside. I hope you're enjoying Canadian spring so far. 😊 My main job has gotten really busy this month, so I didn't have much time to create the financial content that I would have liked to in April. I will try to create more this month. Anyways, here are updates on my TFSA and FHSA contributions. I was again able to contribute $585 to my TFSA and $670 to my FHSA, just as I did last month. Yay, I did it for the fourth time this year in a row! 😊🎉 I set up automatic contributions to my investing accounts last month, and it definitely makes it easier. Paying yourself first before you spend is important! How are you progressing with your financial goals so far this year? 😊🎉

A softening Canadian dollar could complicate Canada's plans for interest rate cuts 💫 With inflation easing, experts predict that the Bank of Canada might reduce interest rates by June. Lower rates can make borrowing more affordable and stimulate spending, which seems beneficial. However, there's a catch. Lower interest rates can discourage foreign investment due to reduced returns on certain investments, leading to decreased demand and a weakening national currency. This is a natural economic cycle, but it gets tricky when other countries' economic conditions differ. As inflation rises in the United States, the U.S. Federal Reserve might delay rate cuts, attracting more investment to the U.S. compared to Canada if Canada proceeds with rate cuts. This dilemma puts Canada's central bank in a challenging position: boosting the economy while maintaining the value of the Canadian dollar against the U.S. dollar. Consequently, some experts suggest that the Bank of Canada may limit the frequency and extent of rate cuts depending on U.S. monetary policy decisions. April 2024 Update: Our Baseline: 70 20 10 Rule April 2024: 🎯FIRE SR Goal: 20%+ (Failed ❌) 🎯Baseline Goal: 10% (Achieved ✅) Actual: Paycheck Breakdown: NEEDS 51.65% [$3,543.33] WANTS 38.66% [$2,652.23] SAVINGS 9.69% [$664.75] Analysis: For most of April we were away on vacation. Won't be back until mid-May. The biggest advantage of this is that we were able to use our typical monthly budget for vacation expenses. This did help a lot as we didn't have a fully funded vacation fund yet since it was a last-minute decision to travel earlier (Visit Grandparents). For April, we got our tax refund which was then split between Baby M's education fund and vacation fund. In addition to our typical income, we also got CCB, and climate change credits... All in all, this was a very expensive month as expected but cashflow is looking pretty good and overall we are on track to be within the $9K budget. How was your April? We are way too hard on ourselves. And it needs to stop.🙅‍♀️ We've all been there — 👉feeling like we don't make enough 👉doubting our financial decisions 👉and carrying the weight of past money mistakes. But here's the truth: None of us are perfect, and that's perfectly okay. Instead of dwelling on what we "should have, could have, would have" done differently, let's focus on moving forward. 🌱Every setback we encounter is a chance to learn and grow. Yes, it's important to be mindful of our spending and make conscious choices. And yes, there will be moments when the fun police will show up and say, "𝘕𝘰, 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘤𝘢𝘯'𝘵 𝘣𝘶𝘺 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵." But that doesn't mean we have to carry the weight of past mistakes every. single. day. So here's my advice: Forgive yourself. Let go of the guilt and self-criticism - not just with money, but with all things and make small consistent progress. 💜You've got this. #moneymindset #financialfreedom #personalfinance #wealthcoach #moneycoachforwomen #moneytipsforwomen #investingforwomen #fempower #payyourselffirst #womenrisingtogether #canadianwomen #canadianfinance #torontowomen #vancouverwomeninbusiness #investormindset #financialliteracy #payoffdebt #financialfreedom

April 2024 Saving Rate (SR) If you are new to our page, welcome, and thanks for stopping by. To achieve our CoastFIRE goals, we use a combination of the 70 20 10 Rule and Zero-base budget to help us stay on track. Each month, the goal is to put away 10% of our after-tax income. 10% is the baseline, the ultimate goal is to beat it by either reducing our "Needs" and "Wants" categories OR increasing income via side hustling. Though most of our savings from each paycheque these days primarily go towards sinking funds. This is still very important as it helps us find a balance and not burn out from our journey too early. About Us: We are a single-income family, though I make a decent income ($100K). $100K just isn't the same as it used to be due to the significant cost of living increases over the last few years. These days, most of our retirement heavy lifting is from our existing investments compounding and my monthly pension contribution. Though money is tighter, I still continue to work on improving my skills to increase my income. Playing the long game. How we did this month (Monthly Paycheck Overview): 1️⃣JAN: 9.12% 2️⃣FEB: 12.2% 3️⃣MAR: 9.87% 4️⃣APR: 9.69% ⬅️ 5️⃣MAY: TBD 6️⃣JUN: TBD 7️⃣JUL: TBD 8️⃣AUG: TBD 9️⃣SEP: TBD 0️⃣OCT: TBD 1️⃣NOV: TBD 2️⃣DEC: TBD YTD Avg.
