Negreira ▶️ Muxĩa 🚌 If you know the movie , The Way you will recognise this church from the final scene. A very touching moment. Sanctuary of Our Lady A Barca is located here for prayer of those who have lost their lives in the many shipwrecks over the years. Known as the Costa da Morte. I walk to the top of the high hill for the panoramic 360 degree view of the rocky shore and small city. It is very overcast the day I arrive and the wind fluctuated the temperature: feeling cold and then warm. My wind jacket has become a saviour on this Camino as I pre-empt the evening cool temperature. Sunset has its beauty illuminated from behind the clouds this evening. Muxĩa has a unique beauty of sandy beaches, coastline walks and history which emanates tragedy but yet beauty at the same time. #galićia #caminoingles #gratitude #pilgrimage #bucketlist #theway #hiker #walkingadventure #spain #caminodesantiago #caminopilgrim #thewayofstjames #stjamesway #myway #peregrina #santiagodecompostela #minimalism #buencamino #ultreia #inspiration #bodymindspirit #courage #endurance #lovemylife #blessed #twoaussies #dreamchaser #thisislife #justmeandmybackpack

Santiago de Compostela ▶️ Negreira 20.9 kms Our last day walking together. Leaving SDC we walk through the park where a statue of The Maria Sisters remains as a topic of controversy as they were quite “cheeky”. We capture a great view of the cathedral from the hill as we walk out of the city and embark on a challenging ascent through beautiful forest walking to an altitude of approximately 300m. It may not seem like a large climb, but with 8kgs each on our backs, it was tough! We cross the medieval Ponte Maceira and explore the old mills. By the time we reach the top of the climb for the day, our faces match the colour of beetroot. We finally reach our Albergue in Negreira and celebrate with a glass of Alvareño each and a large bag of potato crisps! It went down well. Today is again bittersweet as I bid Janelle a Buen Camino as she continues her walk to Finisterre. For me, it’s a bus ride to Muxĩa. #galićia #caminoingles #gratitude #pilgrimage #bucketlist #theway #hiker #walkingadventure #spain #caminodesantiago #caminopilgrim #thewayofstjames #stjamesway #myway #peregrina #santiagodecompostela #minimalism #buencamino #ultreia #inspiration #bodymindspirit #courage #endurance #lovemylife #blessed #twoaussies #dreamchaser #thisislife #justmeandmybackpack

Day Six Segreiro ▶️ Santiago de Compostela 16.6 kms 36648 steps Departing Segueiro is bittersweet knowing our next stop is Santiago. I don’t want this to end. This journey has been surprisingly beautiful in so many ways. I contemplate how I feel walking a second time into Santiago. I leave the hostel forgetting my rain jacket and unknowingly manage to lose my sandals. Luckily, only 500m en route, I swiftly return to the hostel, retrieve my jacket and also find my sandals along the way. I truly believe it difficult to be disappointed on any Camino. Intoxicating beauty, experiences and people we meet along the way. The magic of the Camino. We walk through a Bosque Encantado (Enchanted Forest) where witches on broomsticks are the theme. Caroline (Belgium) and Joe (Australia) walk alongside us. We chat. We laugh. We reflect. As we are on approach, a stop at a small chapel to acquire a stamp and then perfectly timed, its bells sound. Smiles explode on our faces and then the sound of fireworks add to the miracle of our arrival. The Celtic bagpipe plays as we enter Plaza Obradoiro. Happy Tears and hugs are all round and this feeling is inexplicable. We are all elated and so grateful for being us. We feel connected in a way that makes it strange to believe we only met within the last few days. A photoshoot to capture the moments of this experience. We collect our well-earned Compostelas and break bread together over beer wine and tapas to celebrate. Evening pilgrim mass is appropriate although it’s not so busy as the butofumeiro is not operating due to restoration. The day is ended yet again with our Camino family and sadly farewelling some. A Portuguese band perform in the square which entices us to dance- it’s this day that makes all the lack of sleep, sweat and aches worth it. Way too many photos to post which is why there’s two posts! Only a max of 10 per post allowed.

Day Five Hospital de Bruma ▶️ Segueiro 25.6 kms 35332 steps Today we leave Bruma with a mystical pink sunrise sky. The crisp air of the first hour brings with it peace and ease. The hills are very mildly undulating. Unlike yesterday’s steep ascent at the beginning of the day, today is much more welcoming to walk. Plans now evolve and we realise we are arriving into Santiago two days ahead of schedule. We shuffle around accommodation and begin to make new plans. Today, we are prepared for our longest walk yet. We pass through natures beauty at its best. Camino storybook-style pathways as one would expect with yellow arrows waymarking very easily. The weather is perfect and aromatic grass and floral fragrances fill the air. Gratitude keeps entering my mind and I have so much to be grateful for. We keep meeting Joe at each stop and he always has very interesting stories to tell. His Spanish fluency makes life very easy for us. At approximately the fifteen km point we decide to divert onto the alternate route as these are usually more scenic. Our only other option is to continue alongside the motorway. I’m not so sure the alternate way is any better on this occasion. We walk for what feels like forever along a road that goes for as far as the eyes can see. The scenery is quite boring and there’s really not much to see. One straight road. The heat has now emerged and there is barely any shade. We take two breaks on the roadside taking a long stretch. We consider turning right returning to the traditional way. We don’t. We persevere and eventually arrive at the meeting intersection as planned just before entering Segueiro. At this point I am hot and bothered and cannot wait to reach our accommodation for the night. The weather is now remarkable and our wish to wear t-shirts has come true with a vengeance. Very tired and hungry, we research restaurants. It is very difficult to find typical, delectable Galician food at a time appropriate to our pilgrim schedule. Most restaurants only serve drinks until 8pm but we find a cafe and order salads. These take an hour to arrive and they are devoured within 5 minutes. Looking forward to pimentos de Padron in Santiago!.

Day Four Betanzos ▶️ Hospital de Bruma 25.1kms 38408 steps We have the Albergue completely to ourselves and have the best sleep ahead of what I thought would be the most challenging day - it evolved into the best day! The arduous altitude climb of nearly 500m and the longest distance yet, was made so much more pleasant with our Camino family. Caroline (Belgium) Denisa (Czech R.) and James (UK). The weather is now delightfully warm and we are walking in T-shirts. We take snacks and hydration drinks with us as we learn of minimal stops on this stage of the Camino. First stop at the 11km point at a cafe in Presedo. Second stop Beche, a picnic area by the lake. Third stop 22kms at an eclectic cafe, Casa Avelina which was the hi light of my day. The Spanish ladies who run this cafe are enchanting. We are offered a visit to the quaint church across the road, San Roque das Travesas (a peregrino saint) where I hug a tree, and then a rosary prayer is read to the pilgrims. It is very difficult to hold back tears of grateful emotion. These moments are what the Camino presents- people who feel like family, and the small things that mean so much. The whole day was encompassed with sunshine, beauty of nature; eucalyptus trees, wildflowers, farm animals, granaries and locals all wishing a Buen Camino as we pass by. There is excitement of adventure as we take an alternative route needing to follow a map as it is an unmarked route. At the end of the day dinner at the only restaurant available in this tiny town is a blast! We are surrounded by a group of of new friends but laughing and sharing stories over an amazing pilgrim meal of soup, chicken and pudding. I am so grateful and have a full heart. #hospitaldebruma #galićia #caminoingles #gratitude #pilgrimage #bucketlist #theway #hiker #walkingadventure #spain #caminodesantiago #caminopilgrim #thewayofstjames #stjamesway #myway #peregrina #santiagodecompostela #minimalism #buencamino #ultreia #inspiration #bodymindspirit #courage #endurance #lovemylife #blessed #twoaussies #dreamchaser #thisislife #justmeandmybackpack

Day Three Pontedeume ▶️ Betanzos 20.9 kms 37494 steps This has been the most challenging day so far. The steep incline as we leave Pontedeume is an awakening surprise to start the day. The uphill climb just didn’t seem to end. The reward is the exquisite views of the forest back over the valleys. A sight for sore eyes, first break is at a very-well-set-up cafe called Ultreia et Suseia where we buy our Camino shells, jamon on bread, coffees and cheesecake! The lady is absolutely delightful and her hospitably so warm. The second break is approximately two hours later where, under two marquees set up on the side of the walking path, hospitaleros offer fruit and drinks only for a donation. So simple but this is the best of the day. Sweet mandarins, bananas and Galician hospitality. We stay for approximately half an hour before continuing our journey. We even meet a horse on the side of the road who is happy to be stroked. The Camino continues to present with little reminders of synchronicity. The colours of the foliage strike me as they are much more vivid under the blue skies. Our Camino family is beginning to grow too- Joe from Canberra and Caroline from Belgium. We have dinner together tonight in Betanzos although it is always challenging to find food at 6pm as only tapas are offered until 8pm - it’s early-to-bed for us peregrinas! Remarkably tonight we have the whole hostel to ourselves which is great because we have big walk ahead of us tomorrow - the hardest yet! #betanzos #galićia #caminoingles #gratitude #pilgrimage #bucketlist #theway #hiker #walkingadventure #spain #caminodesantiago #caminopilgrim #thewayofstjames #stjamesway #myway #peregrina #santiagodecompostela #minimalism #buencamino #ultreia #inspiration #bodymindspirit #courage #endurance #lovemylife #blessed #twoaussies #dreamchaser #thisislife #justmeandmybackpack

Day One Ferrol ▶️ Neda 14.4 kms 32,817 steps We start at Ferrol donning ponchos leaving the city at 8:00 but not before a photoshoot at the port. Using the Buen Camino app to navigate out of the city, this is much easier than the paper map, although the constant rain fogs up my glasses, drenches my phone and the bottom half of my trousers. Lucky for waterproof hiking boots. The immediate walk leaving Ferrol isn’t so pretty. The industrial shipyards and naval base take up the first 1.5 hours of the walk. We begin to enter the more natural landscape which is welcoming and approach a quaint monastery- San Martino de Xubia where we are called inside by a screechy voice of a Spanish lady calling out to all the passing peregrinas. She is more than happy to stamp our passports and talk to us in Spanish of course. We stay a short while and bid her farewell thanking her for the experience and continue on. Only a few minutes later we pass cute piglets, cows and donkeys. As the rain begins to slow, the smell of fresh rain in the forest and the sounds of birds fill the air. We opt to take the Complimentario route around the old mill house as this route is more scenic. The sound of the rushing water in the Ria Ferrol is indicative of the abundance of water in this region which explains the lush greenness of the vegetation. I’m not going to sugar-coat it- I am exhausted. My face says it all. This is the first time I have ever experienced a Camino walking through the early deluge of rain such as today. The forecast is promising an improvement for the next few days and I can’t tell you how excited we will be to see the sun. It’s early to bed tonight in our Albergue but first some chocolate and sweet strawberries to end the day #neda #galićia #caminoingles #gratitude #pilgrimage #theway #hiker #walkingadventure #spain #caminodesantiago #caminopilgrim #thewayofstjames #stjamesway #myway #peregrina #santiagodecompostela #minimalism #buencamino #ultreia #inspiration #theworldisyouroyster #bodymindspirit #courage #endurance #lovemylife #blessed #twoaussies #dreamchaser #thisislife #justmeandmybackpack

Dit zijn ze, de Via de la Plata in 15 beelden 📸 These are Boudewijn & Marieke 👧👦 They asked us last year if we could help them organize the Via de la Plata. Of course we took up the challenge together with them. And there they were, last Monday, after more than 1000 km in 50 days. With a big smile in front of the cathedral. It was a journey with 'ups & downs', so we can only have deep respect for their resilience and performance 💟 We asked them about their most beautiful photos. Trains, planes and automobiles. Ferrol is not so well connected. Both day and night Ferrol emanates a slow pace but is the largest Naval base in Spain known historically for its shipbuilding. It’s 22:00, this quiet, cobblestoned city offers many gastronomical experiences. One small, inconspicuous restaurant named O Pincho is recommended and is buzzing. We eat pimientos de padron, small squids with potatoes and the freshest green salad! The food is exquisite and hits the spot perfectly. We soon learn that it rains a lot here, but like every pilgrim should be, preparation is key. Pre-Camino I arrive with a little trepidation but it soon disappears with the warmth of Galician hospitality. In the morning, first stop the post office to ship two bags to Santiago. Second stop coffee and breakfast. We then proceed to the tourist information office to obtain credenzas. We pass the huge port, abandoned historical buildings and more cafes oozing smells of sugary pastries. We are treated with kindness at every stop. A visit to the local church on the way seems natural to begin a pilgrimage. The local priest blesses us speaking in Spanish. Not understanding what he said, my heart fill with warmth and comfort. The language barrier doesn’t matter. Trepidation now non-existent I am now excited to reconnect with myself and the spiritual essence that comes with this walk. For me, walking The Way of St James is to have questions answered, to confront life’s obstacles and to embrace peace in a very uncertain world. Not knowing what lies ahead is wonderful and I simply hope at this stage it’s not too much rain and a right knee that will last the distance. The symbol of the scallop shell was used to guide pilgrims along the Camino de Santiago, with the shell representing the way to the Cathedral. The scallop shell became a symbol of pilgrimage and a reminder of the power of faith, which is why it has been used in art and architecture in Camino de Santiago for centuries. #caminopilgrim #portugal_places #portugal_em_fotos #portugal_places #caminoportugues #caminoportugués #walkingeverywhere #walkingtheworld #wayofstjames #solowomentravel #womensupportingwomen #womenempowerment #womeninspiringwomen #traveltheworld #travelphotography #travel @karenfedercooper @nowboarding.travel #pilgrims #spain #spaintravel #spain❤️ #spain🇪🇸 #spaintrip #galicia #scallopshell

After walking 175 miles in 12 days in 1 and 2 star hotels, Karen and I decided to treat ourselves to the Parador Hotel in Santiago de Compostela. A mixture of history, art and tradition, the Hotel Parador Santiago de Compostela forms a magnificent corner of the main square with the Cathedral in one of the most visited regional capitals in the world. Also known as Hostal dos Reis Catolicos it was originally a Royal Hospital and dates back to 1499. It provided lodging and shelter for the numerous pilgrims making their way to Santiago, an age old practice which continues to this day. Considered to be the oldest hotel in the world it is also one of the most luxurious. It has four cloisters of immense beauty, elegant reception rooms, spectacular bedrooms and a luxurious dining room. 🩷 #caminopilgrim #portugal_places #portugal_em_fotos #portugal_places #caminoportugues #caminoportugués #walkingeverywhere #walkingtheworld #wayofstjames #solowomentravel #womensupportingwomen #womenempowerment #womeninspiringwomen #traveltheworld #travelphotography #travel @karenfedercooper @nowboarding.travel #pilgrims #santiagodecompostela #paradorhotel #uniquehotels #hotelsoftheworld #hotelsofinstagram #hotelstyle #beautifulhotels #spain #spaintravel #spain❤️ #spain🇪🇸 #spaintrip

Pilgrims in front of the Cathedral. The Camino de Santiago, also known as the Way of St. James, is a network of pilgrimage routes that lead to the city of Santiago de Compostela in northwestern Spain. For centuries, pilgrims from all over Europe and beyond have walked these routes to pay homage to the remains of St. James the Apostle, which are said to be interred in the city’s cathedral. Some contemporary pilgrims walk for emotional or spiritual enlightenment or to test themselves physically. It was an amazing journey 🩷 #caminopilgrim #portugal_places #portugal_em_fotos #portugal_places #caminoportugues #caminoportugués #walkingeverywhere #walkingtheworld #wayofstjames #solowomentravel #womensupportingwomen #womenempowerment #womeninspiringwomen #traveltheworld #travelphotography #travel @karenfedercooper @nowboarding.travel #pilgrims #santiagodecompostela @sabi.wllrt #spain #spaintravel #spain❤️ #spain🇪🇸 #spaintrip

12 days of walking the Camino de Santiago 🌼 As I sit here and reflect for the first time on it all I feel like it’s all going down as one of the stories to tell the grandkids one day. It’s been sheer beauty and nature bliss. It’s been living with one pair of hiking clothes day in and day out. It’s been freezing our ass’s off in the morning and getting heat rashes in the afternoon. It’s been foot pain, shoulder pain, leg aches, hives, and more pain meds than I care to admit. It’s been long conversations exchanged over evening stretches or board games. And it’s definitely been big dinners thrown together with creative spice and sometimes meager tienda rations. Every morning we’re up before the sunrise and every night we’re in bed before it sets. It reminds me of my time in Swaziland with no electricity and living more in sync with nature. I can’t appreciate enough the lessons this road is teaching me and there’s still so much more. #caminodesantiago #santiagodecompostela #buencamino #pilgrim #camino #caminopilgrim #walk

Day 7 Tangier to Tarifa to Tahivilla: 44km, 652m At sunrise I crossed from Morocco to Spain by ferry, a short single-hour journey through the straight to transition from Africa to Europe. In Tarifa, I found my first Camino stamp at the Iglesia for my Credencial (pilgrim passport). I got some Euros and started riding the Camino del Estrecho which connects Algeciras to Cádiz, where I’ll head north on the Vía Augusta to Sevilla and start the 1000km Vía de la Plata to Santiago de Compostela. It’s like home to be back on the Camino, and a relief to be on a remote, stunning route that sees few travelers. The path followed the beaches of Tarifa for the first stretch, with rugged mountains towering over the coastal Moroccan towns visible south across the sea. I traversed a road through huge sand dunes to climb up into the hills to find a chunky sheep track through forests farther inland, and onto pastureland with muddy cattle tracks and large windfarms. The singletrack was a stark reminder that I’m now primarily following a hiking rather than paved roads. I opted for a short day to reset and transition from Morocco to Spain, and approvechar the only pilgrim albergue on this stretch in the small town of Tahivilla, a 3-bed, 2-room space that the municipality has made available for pilgrims traveling to Santiago. I picked up the key at the bar on the plaza and made myself home in this cozy, clean and quiet refuge to rest up and plan for the days ahead. An evening stroll around town took only a few minutes, complete with dinner patronage at the bar in gratitude for assisting pilgrims on the Way; salty pescado a la y una Estrella Galicia.

We crossed into Spain today and settled into our hotel in A Guarda early. Karen and I decided to use the rest of the afternoon to visit the Santa Trega settlement overlooking A Guarda. It is a 45 minute walk up hill with a beautiful view of the A@Guarda port. Santa Trega was a ‘Castro-Roman’ settlement. It was inhabited between 100 BC and 100 AD, in a period when the process of Romanisation of the northwest of the Iberian peninsula had already begun. Despite this, the construction system reflects techniques that respect the Castro tradition and has seen very little Roman influence. Absolutely magnificent! Well worth the effort. #ancientruins #romanruins #caminopilgrim #portugal_places #portugal_em_fotos #portugal_places #caminoportugues #caminoportugués #walkingeverywhere #walkingtheworld #wayofstjames #solowomentravel #womensupportingwomen #womenempowerment #womeninspiringwomen #traveltheworld #travelphotography #travel @karenfedercooper @nowboarding.travel #pilgrims #spain #spain🇪🇸 #spain❤️

While in Porto on April 19, 2023, I met four confused Polish Pilgrims trying to get their bearings in the old city. I introduced myself as a fellow pilgrim and showed them to their hotel and their Camino starting point, the cathedral. I wished them Bom Camino. As my adventure was ending, theirs was just beginning.

Fisterre is the town at the end of the road, a destination for tourists and pilgrims with plenty of hotels, albergues, and restaurants. Finisterre is the point you walk to past the town, the fabled “End of the World”. The area reminded me of Forillon National Parc in Gapse, Quebec, and Twillingate in Newfoundland, Canada. Juan Juan lives in Fisterre, Spain and made the last official stamp of my Caminos with wax. He and the rest of the staff at Antico Cafe Bar Tito Dal 1910 have all completed Caminos. The bar is decorated with Camino memorabilia and a mural of the French route from France to Finisterre. They also serve excellent tiramisu. The bus took me back to Santiago and I stayed one last night at the Last Stamp Albergue. The next day I was going to take a bus to Porto, Portugal for three nights, where I would meet friends from home. From there I would take a bus to Lisbon, spend two more days, and fly home. I walked 16.7 km this day.

3/22/2024, 5:11:14 PM

This morning I took a bus from Santiago to Finisterre. I do plan to one day walk this Camino, but I’ve had my fill of walking for this trip. The three hour bus ride through the hills, along the coast, and past fishing villages was lovely. Mike from New Zealand had just completed the Portuguese Coastal Camino with his grandkids from Australia. He said this may be his last long walk so he wanted to share it with the family. They were about to board the bus to Finisterre.

This is me celebrating my second arrival to the cathedral at Santiago de Compostela, a week after my first arrival. It felt different arriving on my own but still good. I walked the Camino Ingles quickly and did not end up walking with others like I did on the Camino Portugues. I think longer caminos allow for those new friendships to blossom.

3/20/2024, 4:55:29 PM

Robert from Belgium again. I took his portrait again because he insisted I do. As he had planned, he took his time on the Portuguese Coastal Route, finishing with a big smile this day. He, Babby, and I ended up at The Last Stamp Albergue and went for a celebratory dinner together.

3/19/2024, 10:54:24 PM

Chiu Chi is from Taiwan. She had just completed her third Camino, the Portuguese Central route from Porto. Here she is sitting in her bunk across from mine at The Last Stamp Albergue. She was leaving the next day for The Lake District National Park in England. I walked 24.9 km this day.

3/16/2024, 12:58:26 AM

Babby, originally from Alaska was now living in Manhattan, USA. She had just completed the Portuguese Coastal Camino with Spiritual Variant. She walked the final two days with Robert from Belgium, whom I had met and photographed April 3.

3/14/2024, 7:49:00 PM

Rodrigo and Estela, from Spain had just completed the North Camino. I will begin the Camino del Norte, the North Camino on March 28, 2024.

Canadian Sister and Brother, Sandra from Airdrie, Alberta and Martin from Creston, British Columbia, were just taking in the feeling of completing a section of the Camino Frances.

3/12/2024, 9:49:11 PM

Forecasts showed this day would be my hottest yet at 26 Celcius, so I was happy that I had put in a long previous day, making this one an easy stroll to Santiago. I made the most of my single room, slept in, and was on trail by 9 am, long after most other pilgrims. I did catch up to Maria and Yilin from Singapore, and Alphonse from the Netherlands. The walk into Santiago de Compostela felt different travelling alone, not better or worse, just different. At the cathedral, I asked someone to take my photo and then I talked to some other arriving pilgrims. Vicky is from Ohio, USA and was completing her first, a portion of Camino Frances.

Alphonse is from the Netherlands. At 77, this was his seventh Camino. In the 18 years since retiring as a government scientist, he has gone on many long walks and cycle trips. He told me about another pilgrimage walk in Norway to the burial place of St. Olav that starts in Oslo. Olav’s Way or The Old King’s Road is a 640 km pilgrimage maintained by Lutheran parishes. My lack of specifics on the Wise Pilgrims app made it difficult to know where my intended stop would be. It was still early so I pushed on. Seven hours and 41.6 km later, I was in Sigueiro. I splurged and got a private room at the Albergue Camino Real. For 45 Euros, I got a private bedroom with ensuite in an apartment by myself, complete with living room, patio, and kitchen. No drama tonight.

3/7/2024, 7:37:53 PM

Pamela from Ireland, and Sarah from England, were on their second Camino. They were part of a group with their luggage being moved ahead to their next accommodation each day. It seemed to be a great way for friends of different abilities to complete a Camino.

3/6/2024, 6:24:48 PM

This morning I was out at 7 am with Kevin from Canterbury. It was dark but I wanted to put some distance between me and the Italian drama. The sunrise was lovely as I walked through a eucalyptus forest and the views of farmland were stunning. Ulla and Laura are from Dusseldorf, Germany. This mother daughter team was spending their Easter holiday walking their first Camino. They were planning on taking a day trip by bus to Finisterre once they reached Santiago. I had now decided to do the same.

3/5/2024, 6:08:49 PM

Cynthia is from Virginia, USA, on her first Camino with friends from home. She is a recently retired forensic interviewer of abused children, enjoying the peace and quiet on the Camino. We walked through a eucalyptus forest shortly after a rain as we talked, and she found it a huge contrast to her work life. I walked an easy 29.1 km this day to the Albergue de Peregrinos de Preseda, a small space with 16 beds. There were only five of us at the albergue until 6pm when a group of 8 Italians hobbled in. They were in their 50’s and all related somehow, but it wasn’t all sunshine and roses. Two other Italian women at the albergue informed us over dinner that the animated talking was aimed at whoever in their group thought this was a good idea. Come 10 pm, normal lights out in an albergue, the place was still buzzing. I handed out a couple pairs of earplugs to my new friends. On the upside, the Preseda albergue was only 7 euros per night.

3/4/2024, 5:33:46 PM

Marc is from Barcelona, Spain. This was his second Camino. He walked the Portuguese Coastal Camino last year. He spent the past two nights at the same albergues as me. I planned to slow my pace as I was in no rush, so this would be the last time I saw him.

3/1/2024, 4:01:01 PM

Wise Pilgrim has apps for all the Caminos, with maps that track your location, list accommodations, and give basic descriptions of the towns you pass through. The app for the Portuguese route was so reliable that I never pulled out my guide book. My English Camino app, however, refused to zoom out, allowing only 400 m of view in any direction. Day one I ended up off trail for about 30 minutes. Since then, I had to rely on physical trail markers for guidance. Since Ferrol, the markings were plentiful and easy to follow. Slave is from Bulgaria. He also stayed at the Mino albergue last night. Slave is the first pilgrim I have met that walks faster than me.

2/27/2024, 11:12:35 PM

Kevin is from Cantebury, England. His was the smallest and lightest pack I had seen being carried on either Camino so far. He had completed many Caminos over the past few years, but his would be his last. His new partner can’t walk the long distances, and he wants to spend his limited holidays with her. I stayed at the Albergue de Peregrinos de Miño, a relatively new purpose-built albergue on the edge of Mino. A short walk took me into town where I found lunch and a grocery store for tomorrow’s fruit. I did laundry in the late afternoon and hung it to dry in the sun. In the evening, some local teens broke the silence with an impromptu car show on the road, but it didn’t last long. I walked 30.5 km this day.

2/26/2024, 8:16:30 PM

Ilaria is from Italy originally, but her husband’s work has moved their family to many European cities. This was her first Camino, a solo venture. We recognized each other from last night’s albergue in Neda, and had both stopped for lunch in Pontedeume. This night we ended up at different accommodations, but the following night we both stayed at the albergue in Presedo.

2/23/2024, 7:54:35 PM

The day started with rain and me in my poncho. Fortunately, the rain didn’t last long. The industrial city walking of the previous day was also done. Hills, forests, and farmland filled the day. Dana is from Kansas City, Missouri, USA. She was walking the English Camino and then flying to Scotland to walk the West Highland Way. Her way of meeting up with other pilgrims she knew was to suggest always stopping at the second eating establishment you come to in a town. I never saw her again.

2/22/2024, 10:18:39 PM

Most of my day was spent walking the north shoreline of Ria de Ferrol through an industrial area of town. The waterway eventually narrowed and was crossed by a pedestrian bridge next to my destination for the night, Albergue de peregrinos de Neda. Maria and Yilin are friends from Singapore. This was their first Camino. They chose this shorter Camino route not knowing how they would like it. They were all smiles on the last day when I met them again.

2/21/2024, 11:10:55 PM

Pilgrims from across Europe have been walking to Santiago de Compostela for centuries. The residents of Great Britain, however, had to walk to the south coast of England, sail across the English Channel and the Bay of Biscay, and then walk to Santiago. There are two historic ports of entry for the English pilgrims: Ferrol and A Coruna. I chose Ferrol, a major port town for the Spanish Navy, approximately 120 km from Santiago to start my second Camino. I caught an early bus from Santiago to Ferrol and then walked in a light rain to the starting point on the dock. There I found an information centre where I received my first English Camino stamp. Peter and Maureen are a father and daughter team from Liverpool, England. I met them on the dock taking a selfie. They were celebrating Peter’s 80th birthday by walking two days of the English Camino together.

2/21/2024, 12:49:37 AM

Jette and Max (Bear), Caia, Andrea, Lucas, and Laura This happy tramily (three Germans, one Italian, one Belgian, and one bear) just completed the challenging North Camino from France in 31 days. I wasn’t sure what my next move would be. I had 13 days before my flight and so many options. My original plan was to walk the Camino to Finisterre, the end of the world, but I didn’t feel like starting out with a large crowd of pilgrims. I decided on the English Camino, a 120 km mostly rural route that would give a second chance to walk to Santiago. I booked a bus ticket to Ferrol for early the next morning. We walked 31.9 km this day.

___________________ #걷는마음 #책기록
