Link in bio. • Aaron Tolson started dancing at the age of ten in Lawrence, Massachusetts. Four years into his dance career he was performing in the Great Tap Reunion at the Apollo Theater alongside tap legends Derick Grant, Savion Glover, Gregory Hines, and the cast of the movie “Tap.” Soon after, Tolson met Julia Boynton in Boston, who guided him in the direction of tap as a lifestyle. • Tolson accepted a role in the national and international tours of Riverdance. He was a soloist and the captain of the tap dancers during his six-year run with the show and had the opportunities to perform on Broadway, at Radio City Music Hall, on various TV shows, at NBA games, and on stages all over the world. • In 2006, Tolson began working with longtime friend Derick K. Grant on Imagine Tap!, a Chicago-based show whose formation would eventually become the subject of a feature-length documentary, titled Tap or Die. Tolson performed in the show alongside Grant and fellow tap dancers Jason Samuels Smith, Michelle Dorrance, Chloe Arnold, Dormeshia Sumbrey-Edwards, Ayodele Casel, Joseph Wiggin, Jason Janas, Jared Grimes, Jumaane Taylor, Tre Dumas, Brill Barrett, and more. • Aaron currently teaches at the Boston Conservatory at Berklee, but he is soon moving on to a new adventure. He will be leaving to be the Director of Dance at the Aaron Tolson Institute of Dance at Saint Anselm College. • Ashley Ha is an 18-year-old Taiwanese American performer, content creator, and activist. Viertel began his theatrical career as a drama critic for the Los Angeles Herald Examiner and then worked as a dramaturg at the Mark Taper Forum. This led to his three decades as Creative Director and Senior Vice President of Jujamcin Theaters where he oversaw the production of 50 Broadway plays and musicals. Somehow, simultaneously he also served for two decades as the Artistic Director of the New York City Center’s Encores! series, producing 65 musical revivals. Perhaps most notably, he was a creative force behind a string of blockbuster musicals including Smokey Joe’s Café, Dear Evan Hanson, and Hairspray. In addition, he taught musical theater at NYU Tisch School of the Arts and is the author of the New York Times bestseller, The Secret Life of The American Musical. In this conversation Jack shares with us why he dedicated the book to Seymour "Red" Press, the legendary Broadway reed player and orchestra contractor, and to what degree one of the three central characters is based on him. We also discuss the many actual show business figures that show up as characters including Tommy & Jimmy Dorsey, Steve Allen, Jerry Herman, Joe Layton, Joe Papp, and the great Ethel Waters, to name only a few, as well as the wonderful period trivia, inside jokes, easter eggs, and sharp telling details that the book is filled with, and that only someone immersed in the world of Broadway could supply. To celebrate #womenshistorymonth today I have posted the first of two episodes of #broadwaynation that I recorded back during the pandemic with Tony Award-winning designer Ann Hould-Ward. In this episode we discuss the amazing history of #Broadway Costume design with a special focus on Irene Sharraff, the legendary designer whose incredible 56-year career spanned from 1933 to 1989. Sharraff designed the #costumes for more than 52 #broadwaymusicals including As Thousands Cheer, Jubilee, On Your Toes, The Boys From Syracuse, Lady In The Dark, #thekingandi , #westsidestorymusical, Flower Drum Song, #funnygirl , Sweet Charity, and Jerome Robbins Broadway. She was nominated for six #tonyawards and won the Tony for The King And I. She also won five #academyawards for her designs for the classic films An American In Paris, The King And I, West Side Story, Cleopatra, and Who’s Afraid Of Virginia Woolf. One of the main threads of this podcast is how the arts and crafts of the Broadway Musical have been handed down directly from one practitioner to the next, generation to generation and Irene Sharaff is at the center of a succession of dynamic women that goes back more than 100 years to the earliest days of the Broadway Musical and continues right up to today. All of these women were mentored by one or more of the great female designers that came before them, all of them became Tony Award-winning star designers in their own right, and all of them have passed on the art and craft of theatrical #costumedesign to the next generation. My guest on Broadway Nation again is Maya Cantu who returns for more conversation about her book: "Greasepaint Puritan — Boston to 42nd Street in the Queer Backstage Novels of Bradford Ropes." In this fascinating book Maya reclaims the life & career of Broadway dancer turned #novelist & #screenwriter Bradford Ropes, with a central focus on his three long-forgotten #backstage novels: #42ndstreet on which the classic film & stage musicals were based, "Go Into Your Dance," a thinly disguised portrayal of #Broadway showman George White & his Scandals, and the one we focus on in this episode — his 1933 novel, "Stage Mother." All three novels take us backstage on B'way and #vaudeville during the 1920s in what feels like a much more authentic way than we get in other depictions of the era, and all three include multiple #queer characters that were inspired by Rope’s own experiences as a #gay man in #showbiz during the #1920s . May Cantu teaches on the Drama Faculty of Bennington College, and is also the author of "American Cinderella on the Broadway Musical Stage: Imagining the Working Girl from 'Irene' to 'Gypsy.'" When I was older, I had the pleasure of being immersed in musical theatre myself, albeit mainly behind the scenes or in the ensemble (I’m not one for the spotlight!) I grew up watching The Wizard of Oz, Singing in the Rain, Cats, Sound of Music, especially anything staring either Gene Kelly or Judy Garland! Fun fact, the first musical I saw on stage was Peter Pan staring Cathy Rigby and she gave me pixie dust that I still have somewhere ✨✨. In this fascinating book Maya reclaims the life & career of Broadway dancer turned #novelist & #screenwriter Bradford Ropes, with a central focus on his three long-forgotten #backstage novels: #42ndstreet on which the classic film & stage musicals were based, "Go Into Your Dance," a thinly disguised portrayal of #Broadway showman George White & his Scandals, and the one we focus on in this episode — his 1933 novel, "Stage Mother." All three novels take us backstage on B'way and #vaudeville during the 1920s in what feels like a much more authentic way than we get in other depictions of the era, and all three include multiple #queer characters that were inspired by Rope’s own experiences as a #gay man in #showbiz during the #1920s . May Cantu teaches on the Drama Faculty of Bennington College, and is also the author of "American Cinderella on the Broadway Musical Stage: Imagining the Working Girl from 'Irene' to 'Gypsy.'" And as you will hear, the parallels between #StageMother and Gypsy are striking.
