As a vinyl collector, it’s great when we can finally cross an album off our #vinylwishlist. Even better when we’ve been waiting for an official pressing of that album, like we just got with My Name Is My Name from Pusha T. King Push’s debut studio album, which got its title from the TV show The Wire, features #kendricklamar #2chainz #rickross #bigsean and more. And although it was released in 2013, it was only pressed for the first time this month. Khruangbin is giving us #summervibes this holiday weekend (in addition to the beautiful weather here in Boston). They may never be in the conversation of #songsofsummer but they are undoubtedly the perfect sound of summer chill. Their 2018 essential album, Con Todo El Mundo, was pressed by #vinylmeplease that year in a “blue milky” colored vinyl. Featuring an alternate cover, it was limited to 1000 numbered copies. That, and as we near the halfway mark of the year and talk begins of the best albums of the year so far, up there for us is the trio’s fourth studio album, A La Sala. Released last month, it hasn’t left our rotation. Some album anniversaries can make you realize a) how timeless a classic album can be, and b) how old you’re getting. That’s the feeling we get with the Beastie Boys’ Ill Communication, which turns 30 this month! The fourth studio album from the hip hop trio figures prominently in their discography, notable for featuring less of the sampling we heard in the early Beasties era and for giving us one of their best songs ever - “Sabotage.” And who can forget that iconic single’s music video directed by #spikejonze. While Hello Nasty remains our favorite Beastie Boys album, there’s no disputing the place of Ill Communication in hip hop history. Featured here is the great-sounding remastered edition pressed in 2019 on silver marbled vinyl. And the book is “Beastie Boys,” a collection of photographs from Spike Jonze. You know it’s going to be a great summer for new music when one of the most anticipated new releases of this season delivers the goods. @dehdforever released their third studio album today - Poetry from @fatpossum. The album is a different type of tortured poet, however, delivering guitar-heavy melodies and an electric post-punk, dream pop vibe. “Every song is about someone. Like Taylor.” That was how band member Emily Kempf described the songwriting during the band’s listening party on @bandcamp earlier this week. And of those songs, “Dog Days” and “Alien” are our current favorites, though “Mood Ring” and “Light On” are close behind. The band is playing in Boston later this year at @brighton_music. Definitely worth checking out. 2003 was a milestone year for indie rock. And for Ben Gibbard. And for Seth Cohen. Both Death Cab for Cutie’s Transatlanticism and The Postal Service’s Give Up were released that year and forever changed the indie rock landscape. (We still can’t get over the fact that The Postal Service never released another album.) Death Cab was featured heavily on The OC (after all, they were Seth Cohen’s favorite band) and while it helped to propel the band to new heights, Transatlanticism standalone is a transcendent indie rock album and arguably the best the band ever released. This year, the band has been on tour (along with Gibbard’s The Postal Service) playing the entirety of the album in celebration of its 20th anniversary. We haven’t been lucky enough to see it performed live, so spinning this (and Give Up) will have to do! This is a 20th anniversary pressing on forest green vinyl. We love @remiwolf just as much as she loves dogs, which we assume is a lot based on her discography (and this fantastic album cover). Of the many artists releasing new music this year, we’re very excited for Remi Wolf’s sophomore studio album, Big Ideas, coming out in July. The first single, “Cinderella,” is endlessly catchy and follows her equally catchy debut album, 2021’s Juno. It was 10 years ago when she first appeared as a contestant on American Idol. She would go on to release two EPs before Juno - 2019’s You’re A Dog! and 2020’s I’m Allergic To Dogs! Suffice to say, you don’t need to be a dog lover to enjoy her brilliance. Thirty years ago, in 1994, we experienced one of the best years in hip hop history. Paramore is having quite the year. In February, they became the first-ever female-fronted act to take home Best Rock Album at the #grammys for This Is Why. And this week, they’re serving as 2024 #recordstoreday ambassadors. They created quite the stir (and panic!) earlier this year when they went dark on social, leaving fans to speculate on the future of the band. As it turns out, they’re freshly independent artists following the conclusion of their 20-year tenure with Atlantic Records. Nearly a decade since their last performance and 12 years since their last album, @nodoubt reunited at #coachella this weekend for a memorable set featuring deep cuts, their biggest hits, and a performance of “Bathwater” with #oliviarodrigo. While we weren’t there, we’ve been spinning their breakthrough 1995 album, Tragic Kingdom, on this Sunday morning. Thirty years later, it’s still such a great listen and remains one of our favorite ‘90s albums. Many vinyl variants have been released over the years, and maybe we’ll get one for the 30th anniversary next year. This one is a 2016 pressing on yellow, or “Gatorade,” vinyl. We’re about to experience the first #solareclipse since 2017 (and last until 2044), and #eclipsemania has reached full steam over the last few days. For us music fans, of course it’s only appropriate for there to be a playlist to match the hype, and Pink Floyd’s all-time great album The Dark Side of the Moon includes the pre-eminent song for this moment - “Eclipse.” (And yes, there’s Bonnie Tyler too!) There’s almost nothing new to say about TDSOM that hasn’t been expressed before…we love it and have been spinning the remastered version that was released just over a year ago for the album’s 50th Anniversary. April is #nationaljazzappreciationmonth, a celebration of the rich heritage and history of jazz. And perhaps there’s no better time to celebrate as the genre is experiencing a much-welcomed revival over the last few years. Some of the artists leading that revival include #kamasiwashington and #terracemartin. In 2020, they teamed up with #robertglasper and #9thwonder to form @dinnerparty, a jazz supergroup that blends jazz, hip hop and soul. Their first EP, Dinner Party, was followed by a remix album (Dinner Party: Dessert) featuring jazz legend #herbiehancock. Truly enjoying the jazz resurgence and seeing the great genre-bending music that’s being released, including from artists like @nubya_garcia and @shabakahutchings. We’re getting new music from #glassanimals this week with the band set to debut its latest single. It’s been 10 years since @glassanimals first launched onto the scene with their debut studio album, #zaba. Between that phenomenal debut and #dreamland, their 2020 breakout featuring “Heat Waves,” was this quirky 2016 sophomore effort - How to Be a Human Being. The album’s concept was truly unique - it features 11 songs based on 11 different characters inspired by people the band met while traveling to promote Zaba. Happy #beyonce day to those who celebrate! Today, Beyoncé releases her highly-anticipated new album #cowboycarter, Act II of her planned trilogy that started with 2022’s #renaissance. That album became an instant classic upon its release, ending up on many critics’ best-of lists and giving us one dance pop anthem after another. And, we learned this week that Beyoncé originally intended to release Renaissance as Act II but changed it up post-COVID because she felt like people just wanted to dance. Either way, we’re so ready for Cowboy Carter. For us vinyl fans, Beyoncé doesn’t typically release many limited edition variants. This alternate cover of Renaissance was the exception. One of our favorite new music discoveries over the last year has been @laufey. Earlier this month, she announced an expanded edition of her breakthrough sophomore effort Bewitched, a contemporary jazz album that was one of our favorite albums of 2023. It went on to win a Grammy for Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album. Laufey largely rose to fame through TikTok, posting covers of Chet Baker, Billie Eilish and others. And with Bewitched, she delivers a memorable and unique take on modern jazz that makes her one of today’s most intriguing new artists. Her expanded album (Bewitched: The Goddess Edition) is available next month and is being released on vinyl. The self-titled fourth studio album from @bleachersmusic came out two weeks ago, and we’re loving it! It’s an exciting return to the indie sound of the band’s early work - “Jesus is Dead” and “Call Me After Midnight” are two standouts in that regard, though it’s a great listen from start to finish. As some of you may know or have guessed, we’ve been big fans of @bleachersmusic since their early days, starting with the 2014 debut album, Strange Desire. And although we’ve been to a few live performances of theirs when they’ve played in Boston, our most memorable #bleachers concert was our first in 2017 at @thesinclair in Cambridge with @whereismuna. We’ve been collecting a few variants of this new album, and our favorite might be this one from @bloodrecs. Limited to 1000 numbered copies, it’s a marbled splatter vinyl spectacle. We may never see an album from a hip hop supergroup leave as much of an impact as Madvilliany, which turns 20 years old this weekend. The joint project from rapper #mfdoom and producer @madlib is largely considered to be one of the greatest hip hop albums of all time - and features one of the most iconic album covers ever. The story of how the project came to be is worth the read. The album from @stonesthrow was years in the making, and what followed was a masterful hip hop collaboration featuring short song structures and samples matched to the lyrical genius of MF DOOM. While the duo had been rumored to be working on a follow-up album, it never materialized. And 20 years later, we may never see anything else quite as influential. In 2020, @turntablelab released a limited edition box set featuring exclusive editions of four albums, including Madvilliany.
