With the Army and Marine Corps so well represented in our baseball flannel/uniform collection, the Air Forces (USAAF/USAF) would not be outdone. Three of these pieces are wartime flannels with the 6th Ferrying Group including the trousers. The Goose (Bay) Air Base and the 28th Supply Squadron pieces date from the early-mid 1950s and are from the same veteran (they include trousers and belts). Note that the 28th jersey is lettered on the back. #USAAFBaseball #USAFBaseball #Baseballinwartime #WWIIBaseball #VintageBaseballUniform #militarybaseballuniform #6thFerryingGroup #BollingField #7thArmyAirForce #7thAAF #chevronsanddiamonds

#BenjaminODavisJr is remembered for many things: Being the #first Black #AirForceGeneral, leading the #TuskegeeAirmenflightsquadron and standing up to the military establishment in advancing the cause of #Blacksoldiers. More than that, he is a symbol of the ability of #aBlackman to #persevere through obstacles on the path towards excellence. Benjamin Oliver Davis Jr. was born in #Washington.D.C. on #December18, 1912, the son of #BenjaminODavisSr. and Elnora Dickerson Davis. His father was a renowned #militaryofficer, the #first #BlackGeneral in the United States #Army. Benjamin, Sr. served in various capacities (beginning in the #SpanishAmericanwar) including serving in one of the #original #BuffaloSoldierregiments. Unfortunately, Elnora died from complications from childbirth in 1916 when Benjamin, Jr. was four years old. When Benjamin, Jr. (hereinafter just Davis) was 13 years old, he attended a barnstorming exhibition at #BollingField in Washington, D.C. (now Bolling Air Force base). One of the pilots offered him the opportunity to accompany him on a ride in his plane. Benjamin enjoyed it so much that he became determined to #pilot a plane himself one day. With his father moving around in his military duties, he attended #CentralHighSchool in #ClevelandOhio and graduated in 1929. He enrolled #WesternReserveUniversity (1929-1930) and later moved on to the #UniversityofChicago (1930-1932). Still desiring to serve as a #militarypilot he contacted Illinois Representative #OscarDePriest (the first Black alderman in Chicago, and at the time, the only Black serving in Congress). De Priest sponsored him for a spot in the United States Military Academy in #WestPoint, New York. His time in the Academy was harsh, hostile and relentless in the challenges and obstacles it put in his way. Throughout his four years, none of his classmates would speak to him outside the line of duty. None would be his roommate and none would sit with him to eat. Nonetheless, he graduated in 1936, finishing 35th out his class of 278. http://www.greatblackheroes.com/government/benjamin-o-davis-jr/ #BlackHistoryMonth10 #blackhistoryfact

LISTENING TRUMPETS, 1921 Bolling Air Field, Washington DC, USA, unknown photographer. Gift of Herbert A. French, National Photo Company Collection, courtesy of the @librarycongress. A pair of #hornamplifiers at Bolling Air Field, Washington, USA. Such detectors, developed in response to the rise of military aircraft, were rendered obsolete by the arrival of radar. Manning the horns is a soldier of the #99thAeroSquadron of the #UnitedStatesArmyAirService who first served in #WorldWar1 on the #WesternFront, and was re-designated as the #99thCorpsObservationSquadron in 1921, coinciding with the unit's relocation to #BollingAirForceBase in #WashingtonDC. The #neoclassical building of the #NationalWarCollege at #FortMcNair completed in 1907 in the background of this photograph still exists today. September 18, 1929. “Mr. & Mrs. Lindbergh.” Aviator Charles Lindbergh and Anne Morrow Lindbergh, four months after they married, at Bolling Field en route to South America. Charles, the pioneering aviator, was probably the most famous person in America at the time; Anne would become an accomplished aviator in her own right, as well as one of the best-selling writers of the 20th century. Some three years after this picture was taken, the tragedy of their child’s murder helped define the modern phenomenon of mass-media super-celebrity. From Anne’s February 2001 obituary in the New York Times: “Nothing, not even Lindbergh’s 1927 landing in Paris, had prepared them for the carnival of reporters, photographers, con artists, curiosity-seekers, vandals and crazy people who invaded their lives after their baby was kidnapped. Americans would not experience a similar flood of publicity until the O. J. Simpson murder trial of the 1990s.” - b/w photo colorized by neural network #colorizedphoto #colorizedphotos #oldamerica #1929 #Lindbergh #Aviator #AnneMorrowLindbergh #CharlesLindbergh #BollingField #bestsellingwriter #murder #phenomenon #floodofpublicity
