Our team recently attended the topping out ceremony for the Roper St. Francis Berkeley Hospital expansion project. The final beam was placed atop the future hospital which will double the number of beds and add 200,000 square feet to the existing 116,000-square-foot facility. The goal of this expansion is to meet the needs of the rapidly growing community. “Welcome to hollow ground and a beacon of hope,” said Bernard Gilliard, Board Chairperson for the Tri-Community Center in Cross. A ribbon-cutting event on May 17 was one of great nostalgia, proving how preserving the past and revitalizing a special space is a beneficial endeavor for communities. Once the site of Sandridge Elementary School, Tri-Community Center in Cross is now a thriving haven where local residents can enjoy recreation, fellowship, and other memorable activities. With help from the County’s Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) Program, the facility recently received renovations totaling more than $270,000. Much of the work was completed in-house by Berkeley County Facilities & Grounds. But renovations are far from done. The site is set to soon receive a new basketball court and a revamped baseball field. In the early ‘90s, Berkeley County School District handed over the facility to the Cross community, who transformed it into a unique community center. “We’ve come a long way since we were given this building back in 1991,” said County Councilman Caldwell Pinckney. For Pinckney, Friday’s celebration was also personal—the building reminiscent of childhood memories. “In 1955, I stepped through this door as a first-grader (at) 6 years old,” he said. Many in attendance Friday were also former Sandridge Elementary students. “The building will not go away. The history will not vanish,” Gilliard said. “There are schools that have been given to communities all over this county and all over this state, and most of them don’t look like this; most of the old schools are falling in on themselves. This community has learned, and knew from the beginning, that it was a big responsibility to make this something special. Every time I come here it gets better and better and better. May Group Connection ☼ Our #PAT team celebrated Mother’s Day last week by gathering together and learning about self care. The parents completed a self-assessment and the families joined in on the music activity; Mind, Body, Skills.  The parents engaged in conversation about self care by identifying their strengths and areas they need to work on more. The Parent Educators provided information on signs of children's stress and ways to help cope with them. QE Month of the Young Child ☼ Our Quality Enhancement (QE) Team celebrated Week of the Young Child all April long. Our centers got to enjoy a month of different activities; bunny snuggles, science activities, and story time. Scroll through the pictures to see what all the children enjoyed: Pictures 1-4 Bunny Snuggles: The children at the center enjoyed time outdoors with bunny snuggles. Our special friends at @we_growwiththeflow taught the children how to use gentle hands with the animals while giving them snacks and brushing their fur. Pictures 5-7 Farm Babies: The lovely Stephanie of Fresh Future Farms came to do a Farm Babies session with the children. This week, they did seed and sensory activities where they got to learn with play and touch. You can learn more about Farm Babies at @freshfuturefarm Picture 9-10 Story Time & Calming Cards: The children enjoyed @storytimewithmrnathan as he read "Breathe With Me" by Mariam Ganes. After the teacher and children practiced calming activties from their calming cards. Pictured: The children practiced "Hot Hands" where you rub your hands together to feel them warm up. Once they get hot, slow down to cool your hands down. This is an activity that uses our senses to help self-regulate. Try it out!
