History is in the making at Bears Ears National Monument, but park advocates like you need to speak out to make it happen. The Bureau of Land Management and U.S. Forest Service recently released a historic draft Resource Management Plan for Bears Ears, created in collaboration with five Native American Tribes. The first-of-its-kind plan for the monument’s 1.36 million acres of public land balances preservation and use — such as how the monument’s lands and resources will be cared for and protected, what recreational opportunities will be allowed, and where motorized vehicles can go and livestock can graze. These federal agencies and the Tribes are seeking your input on the draft plan, which will direct how the land will be managed for decades. The opportunity to influence the management and protection of our national monuments doesn’t come around often. My friends @anotherstoyadventure @akashaleather guided us to a surreal slot canyon, where we slid, swam, waded, climbed, and walked through unimaginable terrain. This wrinkled painting 🥴, which I call Cheesebox Reflection, is a composition we encountered while gearing up to swim through a narrow stretch of Cheesebox Canyon. I want to go exploring again. Nous nous sommes contentés de faire le tour en voiture car la chaleur était accablante. Les enfants, à l’époque, étaient encore jeunes et nous n’étions pas encore des explorateurs aventuriers. Mais nous osions déjà nous aventurer sur les routes hors circuit touristiques pour parfois nous retrouver bien seuls au milieu de ces vastes étendues sauvages. Les marches découvertes ont suivis tout naturellement. We just drove around the valley because oft he extreme heat. The children were still young at the time and we were not yet adventurous explorers. But we already dared to venture out on the roads outside the tourist circuit and sometimes found ourselves alone in the middle of these vast wilderness areas. I'm a little all over in posting images and stories right now, in part because the push to get High Cols and Deep Canyons out the door has taken up a lot of time, and in part because my day job - which I shared a little bit about yesterday - is both all-encompassing and a lot of fun! Just spent a week riding a big loop on mostly dirt from Green River, through Moab and Indian Creek, up through the Abajos and Monticello, through Bears Ears, Hanksville, and back with @grayson_wickel . He brought a small fiddle, I brought a small banjo, and we pedaled hundreds of miles of dirt, thousands of feet of climbing, and endured heavy winds, some snow, and saw lots of amazing, secluded places. All the while squeezing in time for some tunes for the cliffs and for passerbys of course. I brushed up on my plant IDs and noted over 40 flowering plants in my notebook and had more that I couldn’t capture as I pedaled by (you can’t *always* stop for the flowers haha 🌸) People in towns were very kind. We had to ditch the mountains and bike from Monticello to Blanding … the 40+ mph headwinds got us no where on our bikes and a nice mechanic with a big trailer drove us to Blanding. We ended up rerouting back up into the mountains on Elk Road and it was just magical. Anyways, lots of wonderful stories and a great time with my buddy @grayson_wickel (lil Chip). Just two old time bike packers having a lovely time destroying our bodies in the desert. I feel very grateful for the beautiful open spaces out in Utah, from Mesas, low rocky canyons, to high mountains. It just fills me with stories, like the mountains singing of those before me. There’s a lot of information about Bears Ears National Monument and the socio political issues around its designation. Learn up and do yourself a favor and get out there. Indian Creek is an absolutely magical ✨️ place and I cannot wait to go back. Splitter cracks on sticky red Wingate sandstone was all our crew needed to keep the stoke high during the recent crack clinic I took. Living on the Eastside and loving granite climbs, I felt it was time that I commit and dedicate to learning better techniques for crack climbing and I came out learning exactly what I was searching for. I went from the highest of highs while driving into service after this clinic to the lowest of lows once I learned about Bud's grim diagnosis and rushed home to California. I want to focus on life and the high as much as I can moving forward. Bud would. I'm grateful for the full on effort to put this clinic together by @highsteph and the support, stoke, and help by @enormocast, @andrewbisharat, @lancelemkau, @ianmitchard, @freefallpark, and @tommychandler. I'm also stoked on the awesome other climbers I met on this trip! The two buttes in the distance are the Bears Ears, the name was given to them by 5 Native Americans Tribes: The Navajo Nation, Hopi, Ute Mountain Ute, Ute Indian Tribe of the Uintah and Ouray Reservation, and the Pueblo of Zuni, all of which have ancestral ties to the region.
