Late Flowering Lust Quite by chance last night, I watched on @bbc_four a fantastic film using the works of John Betjeman. I shall let the IMDB entry speak for itself, and I would encourage you to watch it on @bbciplayer whilst you can! "This film is a combination of mime and dance that accompanies the "voiced-over" lyrics of a selection of poems by John Betjeman. Altogether, this movie portrays the events of a weekend party at an English country house. "Late Flowering Lust is a lot more wistful than it is lustful, but it is a real gem of a BBC production. It is a reading of a number of John Betjeman's poems by Nigel Hawthorne, one of which gives its title to the film. However the format is unique. The 'plot' is that 'Cousin John' (Hawthorne) is invited for a weekend at a country house. He, and owners of the house, are of the older generation and the daughter and all her friends are of the younger one. The action of the film consists of Nigel Hawthorne voicing-over the selected poems while the three older people mime the subject matter of each one and the 'bright young things' (who are a dance troupe - Adventures in Motion Pictures) dance the subject of each one. It doesn't sound like much to describe it as I have, you have to see it to realise just how original and creative it is. Very English, very amusing and very well done. . Box Set Death March What's your favourite Elvis? Early rocker? Vegas crooner? Gospel singer? The King could and did sing it all. No artist has ever excelled as well across so many varied genres as Elvis Presley. As comfortable driving teenagers crazy with All Shook Up as he was with country ballads like First in Line. His range and the catalogue it created is remarkable, stunning and utterly unique. He was so much more than Jailhouse Rock. A fascinating individual: consumed his whole life with the guilt of being the twin that lived, he was shy growing up with few friends and idolised James Dean. Sam Philips changed his life and the Colonel controlled it. All whilst the mother he protected fiercely watched on and worried. A man of faith his early musical influences were that of gospel church gatherings - all movement and joy. Leaving an indelible marker on the young Elvis he would return to such fervour himself and make his own mark on the world with it. Originally due to nerves at performing, his trademark shaking got the world talking. And moving. Even though he had the career he did it still feels like a missed opportunity. A recording life of what could have been. As a greedy music junkie I'd rewrite history and send the Colonel packing and let the artist follow his own path. The infamous and superb '68 comeback special and accompanying album cut at Muscle Shoals proved there was a true soul singer in there. Still and just. My favourite Elvis? Presley - all of them.

Three wonderful watches over on @bbciplayer . The majestic and brilliantly subtle actress Wendy Hillier in Vita Sackville-West’s All Passion Spent. Such a great cast and the period atmosphere of 1930’s Britain so well created. This production dates back to the 1980s and what great watching it still makes today. Then a trilogy by Lewis Grassic Gibbon set in a Scottish East coast farming community in the interwar years. The filming is showing its age a bit from 1976 but that won’t stop it being enjoyable to watch. It was a Play For Today and I still miss those productions. Lastly, from 1966 an adaptation of Lewis Carroll’s classic novel Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland with a cast including Michael Redgrave and Peter Sellers. It was produced by Jonathan Miller and is in black and white and was, I imagine, broadcast to celebrate the birth date of Charles Dickens. We are so blessed to have this amazing library available to us from the BBC. As well as being lovely to watch they are also brilliant historical documents for future generations to be able to explore life, culture and the arts from previous decades. In celebration of Burns Night recently, BBC Four reshowed the documentary film Angelou on Burns, which was first broadcast on BBC Two in 1996. After months and I mean literally months of delays…it finally arrived. I can’t say it was terrible but it definitely was not great…it was okay...it was fun. I did expect more from a self proclaimed devout Whovian that is Dan Slott. He wrote a very clever Tennant Doctor and for that, I am happy with the result. I liked we got another adventure with Martha and the Tenth Doctor….now, as a veteran Slott reader I can’t help but notice the symbolism of the Pyromeths. They only existence to kidnap and imprison a storyteller who is to be forced to tell tales to the Pyromeths for eternity or die if the story isn’t entertaining or perfect…this is parallel to Slott’s very public social media feud with his ravenous critics and impatient fanbase…perhaps it’s not connected at all but I’d find it pretty ironic if there is no correlation…either way it was fun. We also got some extra time with the Ninth Doctor and Rose. I won’t spoil that. If you like Doctor Who and enjoy stand-alone Dan Slott stories. It’s worth picking-up.
Today is five years since our director @jonnyeveson’s short film #Meteorlight premiered at the @britishfilminstitute Southbank! It’s been a wild five years – it feels like a lifetime ago, but also somehow only a month or two 😖 Meteorlight was so long in the making that when we did press stuff and were asked, “So what’s next for you?”, we always made the joke of “Oh haha I guess we’ll release another film in about five years 🤪” but alas it’s five years later and here we are. 🤪. But we are getting close to finishing our next one! We’re at that glorious stage in animation production where it doesn’t just look like shit grey blobs any more!!! 2024 release here we come baby!!!! (PS – what’s the symbol behind the Meteorlight characters in this post, you ask? It’s the number 5 in the custom language our producer Lindsey made for the film!
