But was very happy to see Dominic North dancing. And I had the best plus one. He pointed out it wasn't so much ballet as a play with no words. But that's a different show. We watched Billy Elliot for the first time in years tonight (crying all the way through as you do in your nostalgic-laden fifties) and were fascinated to discover that the original play (“Dancer” by Lee Hall) was wholly inspired by a book called “Step-by-Step” by Finnish photographer Sirkka-Liisa Konttinen, who chronicled a North Shields ballet school in 1989. The art team behind Billy Elliot all kept a copy of Sirkka’s book in their back pockets through filming, ensuring the production kept the claustrophobic atmosphere of the original book. It’s always interesting to see how one art form inspires another. Here are three other #billyelliot facts for fellow film nerds; 1. The Easington Colliery streets where Billy’s house was located (now mostly demolished) were also used for Lesley Sharp’s ground-breaking 8-minute single-take soliloquy in Jim Cartwright’s 1988 “ROAD” - which in turn inspired Massive Attack’s video of “Unfinished Sympathy” where 3-years later Shara Nelson walked the back streets of Los Angeles (not dissimilar to North Shields in 1991). 2. Mrs Wilkinson, Billy’s ballet teacher, wasn’t featured in the final scene of Swan Lake (where his family travel to London to watch his Swan Lake debut) because Julie Walters wasn’t available for filming (as opposed to her character being bitter and deluded, which I’d always assumed her absence in the final scene alluded to). 3. Late Flowering Lust Quite by chance last night, I watched on @bbc_four a fantastic film using the works of John Betjeman. I shall let the IMDB entry speak for itself, and I would encourage you to watch it on @bbciplayer whilst you can! "This film is a combination of mime and dance that accompanies the "voiced-over" lyrics of a selection of poems by John Betjeman. Altogether, this movie portrays the events of a weekend party at an English country house. "Late Flowering Lust is a lot more wistful than it is lustful, but it is a real gem of a BBC production. It is a reading of a number of John Betjeman's poems by Nigel Hawthorne, one of which gives its title to the film. However the format is unique. The 'plot' is that 'Cousin John' (Hawthorne) is invited for a weekend at a country house. He, and owners of the house, are of the older generation and the daughter and all her friends are of the younger one. The action of the film consists of Nigel Hawthorne voicing-over the selected poems while the three older people mime the subject matter of each one and the 'bright young things' (who are a dance troupe - Adventures in Motion Pictures) dance the subject of each one. It doesn't sound like much to describe it as I have, you have to see it to realise just how original and creative it is. Very English, very amusing and very well done. _ Matthew Bourne's ROMEO➕JULIET 매튜 본의 '로미오와 줄리엣' 2024. 5. 8 - 5. 19 LG아트센터 서울, LG SIGNATURE 홀 매튜 본의 작품은 역삼동 LG아트센터 시절, '백조의 호수' 를 처음으로 관람 했었다. 새하얀 무대와 의상들, 남자 무용수들의 파워풀한 모습이 새롭고 인상 깊어서 오래 기억에 남았는데, 이번에는 '로미오와 줄리엣' 을 LG아트센터 서울에서 관람했다. 아름답고 연출에서의 천재성이 너무나도 압도적이어서 부러움에 보는 내내 눈물이 났다. 정말 아름답고 그렇지만 폭력적이었음. 발레 안좋아한다고 생각해서 여태 안봤는데 오페라도 그렇고 발레도 현대식 해석+연출은 너무 좋으네요. 아름다움을 표현하는 것이 업인 사람들은 어떤 기분일까 싶기도 했다. 감정을 몸으로 표현할 수 있는 능력을 가진다는 게. 발레라는 게 되게 보수적인 예술이라고 하는데 극작에서도 다양성을 연출해낸다는 게 멋있고 그게 사운드와 라이트가 합쳐져서 어우러지는 감정들과 분위기가 너무너무 효괴적이었다. 오 로미오 당신은 왜 로미오 인가요 를 몸으로 표현해내는 것이 가능하다니 말이 아닌 몸짓으로 표현해내는 언어. 사랑은 아름답고 몸도 아름답고 그래서 사랑하는 육체는 아름다운 듯. 무용 역사상 가장 긴 키스신(?)? 이라던데 청소년들의 절절함이 너무 잘 나타나서 귀엽기도 하고 아찔하기도 하고, 여튼 무대가 정말 감각적이었다. 내 취향이었음💔💔 #매튜본 #로미오와줄리엣 #LG아트센터 #lg아트센터서울 #matthewbourne #romeoandjuliet 벚꽃동산 꼭 보러가고싶어요🙏🏻🌸 ㅋㅋㅋ

#매튜본 #로미오와줄리엣 #한국초연 기대가 커서 그런지 아쉬운 점이 너무 많았다. 일단 매튜본 작품을 처음보는터라 차라리 백조의호수가 더 괜찮을지 모르겠다 싶고. 함께 본 다른 친구가 그랬다. ‘야 매튜본도 70대야’ 그러게 말이다. 4년전 런던 초연한 현지 관객은 어찌 느꼈을지 모르겠으나 나에겐 너무 구태의연하고 지루한 파격이었다. 매튜본 라떼는 말이야 시대의 구조주의적 정신병원 설정이나, 의도적 계속되는 남녀 역할 바꿔치기, 그리고 게이라 할지도 결국 줄리엣을 한낱 남성적 시선의 성폭력 피해자이며 미친년으로 만들어 로미오에대한 가해자로 결말을 뽑는게…… 21세기에 파격이라 할 수 있는가? 유교걸의 나라에서 많은 여성 관객들이 너무 쎈거 아니야? 라고 수근대는것을 들었지만, 이건 쎈게 아니라 안일함이 문제이다. 폭력적 설정을 극대화한 스토리비틀기 이전에 이걸 상쇄하는 댄싱모먼트가 폭발적이지 못했다는 것도 한몫했다. 10대의 에너지가 댄스 자체의 퀄리티로 승화되지 못한건 신인캐스팅의 문제인지 안무의 문제인지. 이 무대가 30년쯤 전에 발표되었다면 격한 감동을 느꼈을것 같지만, 적어도 지금의 나에겐 근 5년안에 만들어진 스토리라기엔 진부하기 짝이없었다. 결국 매튜본은 셰익스피어, 프로코피예프, 케네스맥밀란의 정수에 크게 기댄 채 2024년 현재의 로미오와줄리엣을 재창조하는데는 실패했다. 하나 더하자면 게이 연출자 특유의 남주 얼굴만 챙기고 피씨충처럼 여주 얼굴은 개나줘 모드의 캐스팅도 짜증난다. 가련하고 비련한걸 로미오한테 몰빵하고 싶은 심정 이해하나 이제 좀 작작좀 하자. 이제 그런거 재미도 의미도 없다. 그럼에도 불구하고 케네스맥밀란의 프로코피예프 보다 현대 정신병원의 프로코피예프가 훨씬 인상적이었다는 것으로 이 작곡가의 선구적 스타일을 다시 한번 입증 했다. 정신병원에 수감된 10대들의 에너지가 기사의춤 테마와 절묘하게 어울리는 것을 목격한 것과 케네스맥밀란의 데스 파드되를 남녀역전시킨 씬은 그래도 좋았던것 같다. 난 그냥 앞으론 로얄발레단의 케네스맥밀란버전 로미오와줄리엣을 기대해 보련다. #matthewbourne #romeoandjuliet

여긴 위에서 꽃이 내려오네! 좀 일찍 도착해서 카페 발코니에서 음료 마시며 한숨 돌리고, 이태리식당 음식도 좋았고. 이번 '로미오와 줄리엣' 은, 진짜 사람 몸 저렇게 탄력 가득 힘있게 쓰려면 얼마나 연습을 한거냐 싶었고, 너무 앞자리라 극에 몰입이 잘 되지 않았음에도 어느 장면 하나 놓치기 싫었다. 결국 2막부터는 아직 적응 중인 다촛점 안경을 꺼내 쓰고 무대 위의 표정을 자세히 보는 데 성공! 발레인지 연극인지 헷갈릴 정도로 섬세한 연기가 몸의 움직임과 함께 스토리를 전개하는 데 큰 몫을 했다. 몇해 전 "백조의 호수' 는 2층 꼭대기에서 관람하고도 눈물 콧물 범벅이 되어서 커튼콜 끝나고 일어나 나오기 힘들었는데, 내 안이 좀 더 단단해져서인가 이번엔 무용수들 대견하고 연출 애썼다는 느낌이 더 크게 남았다. 암튼 조기예매로 생생한 감상 기회 놓치지 않은 날 아주 많이 칭찬해! @lgartscenter @mbnewadventures #로미오와줄리엣 #RomeoAndJuliet #매튜본 #MatthewBourne #LG아트센터서울 #LG시그니처홀 #LG아트센터
