Mayamam Weavers' Celebration collection celebrates the artistic heritage of Maya weavers, handed down from mother to daughter. Truly heirlooms, you'll find vibrantly brocade-embroidered table linens, basket napkins, and spectacular pillow shells, along with colorful coasters. All have been hand woven on the traditional backstrap loom by a women’s weaving cooperative in Guatemala. The embroidery motifs have been drawn from daily life, from nature, and from Maya Mam cultural symbols.

あやかりの杜で織物教室を始めてから今まで、 生徒さんにお渡しする原始機の織り棒（と私が名づけました）は、全て私自身が作り続けてきました。 国内でグァテマラの織り棒を購入できるところがないため、作るしか無かったことと、 生徒さんに作るところから教えるには、ナイフを使うので怪我のリスクがあること、 などの理由があります。 私は木を削るのは好きだったので苦ではなく、生徒さんが織りを楽しんでくれることを想像しながらコツコツと作っていました。 織るためには最低3本必要で、教室に来てくれる生徒さん一人一人の為に、 300本以上は削ったと思います。 しかし、このところ削るたびに親指の関節の痛みが強くなっていたのですが、 先日織り棒を削ったときに、今までにない痛みで指が動かなくなってしまいました。（年のせいもあると思います…） なので、これからは刀杼同様、 織り棒も木工の方に作ってもらうことにしました。 サイズや金額が変わりますが、 これまでにお渡ししていた織り棒より、使いやすい形に仕上げてもらっています。 今後は新しい織り棒をお渡しすることになりますが、 ご自身で作りたい方には、織り棒作りからも教えようと思います。 #原始機 #腰機 #織物 #手織 #織り機 #織り棒 #道具 #グァテマラ #織り #機織り #telardepalo #telardepalos #backstraploom #backstraploomweaving #weaving #espada #guatemala #okinawa

I’m weaving a lot of daffodil leaves at the moment to make connecting sections for the weaving by the Gorton Weavers from the workshops. Now the flowers have passed, I collect daffodil leaves from parks in Openshaw before the local parks team mow over them. We are pleased to offer for sale another huipil from Venustiano Carranza, Chiapas. It is brocaded on a back-strap loom using a loose weave technique by a member of the weaving collective, Grupo Santa Cruz (Group of the Holy Cross). The huipil looks like a shorter version of garments worn by classic era royal Maya women. On the border of huipil is a symbol of the Golden Olive Woodpecker, an important figure in Maya cosmology which is described on a card we enclose.Ti’ is the Tsotsil name for this bird. In Maya mythology the Ti’ is one of God’s messengers. Its role is to sit in heaven at a big table and wait to be sent down to earth to warn people that Pucuj, the devil is going to bring harm to them. The back of the huipil features 4 rows of small multicolored cosmograms like those across the top of the front of the huipil. We have 3 in stock, 23” wide x 24” long. Price with postage is $65.00. The Warrior: this cushion cover is made by the weavers of #Amanuban in Timor using cotton fibres in a supplementary warp patterning technique that have been dyed black with #muddyes. The motif on this cushion is called Pasu buta and refers to an ornate leather belt worn by a person of the lineage of the #Meowarrior caste. The deep rust panel is made from #handspuncotton woven on a #backstraploom and dyed using sustainably harvested #Ceriopstagal bark from Papua. One of my goals this year was to teach myself to weave on a backstrap loom. This belt was my first attempt, and I am a little bit embarrassed to post a picture of such a beginner result. It has many, MANY mistakes, but I learned a lot about what I can adjust for in the future! You can see in the second photo how I gradually created a more even weave. I think it's helpful to see progress and not just perfect outcomes, so I hope my experimenting and learning can inspire others to do the same. When I was a child, my father moved to Hawaii in search of career and life fulfillment that he could not find in California, which sadly pulled him away from me. This was a challenging thing to come to grips with as an adolescent, yet with it came beautiful vacations, enlivening experiences, the splendor of the tropics and connection with family and friends. From then on Hawaii has drawn me to her and holds complexities of beauty and sorrow. I have had the opportunity to go back a few time since that childhood experience. RISHA. A portrait of a girl from the Deb Barma community wearing a Risha (breast cloth) and traditional necklace known as Ganthi bwtang inspired by a string of seeds. Tribal design draws almost exclusively from nature, which surrounds the indigenous communities of the north-east in abundance. Tripura is home to around 19 such individual tribes, and each has their own specific identity, customs and dialect groupings. Measurements vary, but all are about medium size. On the border of huipils 1-4 is a symbol of the Golden Olive Woodpecker, an important figure in Maya cosmology which is described on a card we enclose.
