Pluto in True Colour Image Credit: @nasa Explanation: What colour is Pluto, really? It took some effort to figure out. Even given all of the images sent back to Earth when the robotic New Horizons spacecraft sped past Pluto in 2015, processing these multi-spectral frames to approximate what the human eye would see was challenging. The result featured here, released three years after the raw data was acquired by New Horizons, is the highest resolution true colour image of Pluto ever taken. Visible in the image is the light-coloured, heart-shaped, Tombaugh Regio, with the unexpectedly smooth Sputnik Planitia, made of frozen nitrogen, filling its western lobe. New Horizons found the dwarf planet to have a surprisingly complex surface composed of many regions having perceptibly different hues. In total, though, Pluto is mostly brown, with much of its muted colour originating from small amounts of surface methane energized by ultraviolet light from the Sun. . . . #Pluto #PlutoInTrueColor #SpaceExploration #NewHorizons #NASA #DwarfPlanet #Astronomy #SpaceScience #CosmicJourney #TombaughRegio #SputnikPlanitia #SolarSystem #OuterSpace #AstronomyLovers #PlanetaryScience #SpacePhotography #NASAImages #SpaceInspiration #CosmicBeauty #SpaceWonders #AstroPhotography #PlutoLove #UniverseExploration #AstroPics #AstronomyGeek #SpaceFacts #PlanetaryExploration #SpaceMission #CelestialBeauty #BeyondEarth

The behemoth sunspot group known as Active Region 3664 (AR3664) 😉 This image of the Sun was taken from my backyard on 10 May 2024. Sunspot AR3664 is the largest and most active sunspot group we have seen so far in the current solar cycle and recent history. It held 58 individual sunspots and stretched almost 200,000 km from end to end, which is more than 15 times the diameter of Earth. This made it visible through ordinary eclipse glasses with no magnification at all! The monster size and solar activity of AR3664 has been compared to the sunspot region that produced the infamous Carrington Event. This historical sunspot region emitted a series of intense solar flares and Coronal Mass Ejections (CMEs) on 1 and 2 September 1859, resulting in extreme geomagnetic storms that set fire to telegraph offices, caused some ships to become lost, and triggered strong auroral displays as close to the equator as Cuba and Hawaii. Beginning of 7 May, AR3664 shot out a spree of 6 CMEs that started to reach Earth just after 12:30 pm EDT on 10 May and produced spectacular auroras over multiple nights. The auroras occurred in both hemispheres and stretched as far from our planet's poles as Puerto Rico and Mexico. Despite the dramatic outbursts, the impacts of AR3664 have been generally benign. Airplane flights were rerouted to avoid higher radiation levels near the poles, high-frequency radio systems experienced interference, and farmers who used precision GPS to steer tractors reported glitches. Northern Lights, Southern Skies An unreal night this past weekend, completely exceeding any of my wildest expectations. I was hopeful that I might be able to capture the aurora low on the horizon if I got to a dark location away from the Nashville suburbs, but I realized this night was going to be something completely different when almost out of nowhere pillars of green and pink began to stream across the sky while I drove to my shooting location for the night. I simply couldn’t believe what I was seeing. A short while later when I started shooting at the location above the aurora activity had certainly calmed down, but I still felt fortunate to capture these beautiful pillars of pink aurora lighting up the sky. A night I’ll never forget. #aurora #auroraborealis #northernlights #kentuckynorthernlights #kentucky #nightsky #astrophoto #astropics #astrophotography #ig_nightscapes #ig_northernlights #nightscaper #nightscapes #astrography_ #astronomy #universetoday #astrovoyagers #astrophotos #northernlightsphotos #astrolandscape

The 37 Cluster Image Credit & Copyright: @Sergio Eguivar Explanation: For the mostly harmless denizens of planet Earth, the brighter stars of open cluster NGC 2169 seem to form a cosmic 37. Did you expect 42? From our perspective, the improbable numerical asterism appears solely by chance. It lies at an estimated distance of 3,300 light-years toward the constellation Orion. As far as galactic or open star clusters go, NGC 2169 is a small one, spanning about 7 light-years. Formed at the same time from the same cloud of dust and gas, the stars of NGC 2169 are only about 11 million years old. Such clusters are expected to disperse over time as they encounter other stars, interstellar clouds, and experience gravitational tides while hitchhiking through the galaxy. Over four billion years ago, our own Sun was likely formed in a similar open cluster of stars. . . #StarryNight #CelestialBeauty #NightSky #CosmicWonder #AstroPhotography #GalacticGlimpse #StarGazing #UniverseToday #AstronomyLovers #DeepSpace #Interstellar #MilkyWay #Nebulae #StellarViews #SpacePorn #GalaxyQuest #StarrySkies #Cosmos #NightSkyLovers #HubbleTelescope #AstroPics #SpaceExploration #AstronomyPhotography #StellarBeauty #GalacticSpectacle #StarClusters #UniverseExploration #HeavenlyViews #EtherealNight #AstronomyGeek

Ciao a tutti! Part of the Vela Supernova Remnant The Vela Supernova Remnant (Vela SNR) is the remnant of a supernova that occurred around 11,000 years ago in the southern constellation Vela. The remnant lies approximately 936 light-years away. It is one of the nearest supernova remnants to the Sun. It is associated with the Vela Pulsar, the brightest pulsar in the sky at radio frequencies. The expanding cloud of material is the remnant of a Type II supernova, a supernova event triggered by the core collapse of a star with at least 8 times the Sun’s mass. It is travelling outwards at 1,200 km/s It is almost 100 light-years across. The Vela Supernova Remnant was created when a massive star shed its outer layers in a supernova event and its core collapsed into a neutron star. The neutron star, the Vela Pulsar, packs a mass comparable to that of the Sun into a diameter of only a few kilometres. This data was really poor. Ciao a tutti! - SpaceWeatherLive -🔭 : Skywatcher 200/1000 PDS f/5.0. - Feuille astrosolar Baader (OD 5.0). - Skywatcher EQ6 Pro Go-To. -📸 : Canon R6 Mk II. - Adaptateur Canon EF/RF. -⚙️: Photo simple d'1/2500 seconde, ISO 250. - 🖥️🖱️: Traitement : Photoshop & Lightroom. -📅 : J'ai pris cette photo le 10 Mai 2024 à 13h47. #astrophotography #astrophoto #astro #astronomy #astropics #astronomer #Space #Sunspots #telescope #Universe #solaractivity #solarstorm #solarsystem #likeabos #planets #picoftheday #photographer #yourESA #universetoday #sun #canonphoto #igersarras #hdf #ig_nightphotography #nature #astromaniacmag #potd #astronomy_eye #Spacepics

#auroraboreale #auroraborealis #auroraboreal #northenlights #auroraborealeitalia #sar #italy #italia #picoftheday #passioneastrofotografia #passioneastronomia #emiliaromagna #visitromagna #romagna #riccione #astrofotografia #astrophotography #astrophoto #astropics #astronomy #astroimaging

#ar3664 - best image so far from our customer Michael Karrer with the Baader Triband-SCT - Schmidt-Cassegrain-based Multi-Purpose-Telescope C925. This is the "evil" #sunspot group that caused the #auroras. The sunspot group looks torn and squashed, the spots are not round but strangely distorted. This is due to the magnetic fields with different polarities that collide here (and cause the eruptions) If you are looking for H-alpha images of this gigantic sunspot, Micheal Karrer has uploaded recent images with the Baader Triband here: www.flickr.com/photos/michael_karrer Interested? “If the stars should appear one night in a thousand years, how would men believe and adore; and preserve for many generations the remembrance of the city of God which had been shown!

#macchiesolari #nikonp950 #p950 #astrofotografia #astronomia #AstronomicalObject #astronomie #astronomy #astrophoto #astrophotography #astropics #sky #skyphotography #space #photo #photooftheday

Milkyway overshadowed .... Plan for Friday was Milkyway with a possibility of Northern Lights. Which is why I drove to the South Coast of England. .... However the Northern Lights was that strong that you could barely see the Milkyway through them. 🤩 .... I managed to get a few of the milkyway before getting into the car to sleep. .... Photo bombed by the International Space Station at the top too 🤩 .... #northernlights #aurora #auroraborealis #auroraboreal #solarflares #solar #nightsky #NightSkyMagic #ourkindofastro #youresa #yourbritain #yourskies #yourastro #astrophotographers #astrofotografia #astrofotografie #astrophotography #astropics #uk_greatshots #ukpotd #photosofthenight #yourbritain
