Leo Mol Gallery Leonid Molodozhanyn, also known as Leo Mol, was a Ukrainian Canadian stained glass artist, painter and sculptor. More than three hundred of Mol's works are displayed in the 1.2 hectare Leo Mol Sculpture Garden in Winnipeg's Assiniboine Park which comprises a gallery, a renovated studio, and an outdoor display. The garden was unveiled on June 18, 1992 and has been expanded twice since. It is supported by private donations, and Mol personally donated 200 bronze sculptures to the city of Winnipeg. Bright Orange Tulips in the English Gardens, Assiniboine Park, Winnipeg, Manitoba. Finally, some spring beauty, on a magnificent spring day, prior to the smoke haze that has set in. Irish playwright and political activist (1856-1950) said: “We don’t stop playing because we grow old; we grow old because we stop playing.” True, but I think I’m aging more quickly my virtue of being perpetually disturbed by climate deterioration, resulting in horrific wildfires in Canada, causing smoke haze across our provinces and into the United States. And the fires have just begun! So when it comes to the state of our world today, environmentally, I think this quote by Aldo Leopold is more apropos: “One of the penalties of an ecological education is that one lives alone in a world of wounds. Much of the damage inflicted on land is quite invisible to laymen. An ecologist must either harden his shell and make believe that the consequences of science are none of his business, or he must be the doctor who sees the marks of death in a community that believes itself well and does not want to be told.” The latter is most certainly true. For those awake, we certainly live in a world of wounds. Friends, know that you’re not alone in your grief. May you find comfort in being with so many fighting for change, and in articulating the truth in our current dire situation. Bearing witness may be the only consolation in situations of environmental and political madness. This was a big-sky, spring morning at the Assiniboine Park. The brilliant, azure-blue sky was dotted sporadically with these puffy, white, cumulus clouds, drifting lazily in the gentle warmth of the spring day. Lately, I find myself watching the sky a lot, yearning for even more sunshine and warmth. I want spring to hurry up, and to usher in summer .🙂 One of the most important modernist authors of the 20th-century, Virginia Woolf, captures beautifully what I long for. She writes: “It was a day when the whole world seemed to be in conspiracy to glorify the earth; the cloudless sky smiled at it, the air caressed it, the sun crowned it with gold . . . . “ As Mark Twain said: “It’s spring fever. That is what the name of it is. And when you’ve got it, you want—oh, you don’t quite know what it is you do want, but it just fairly makes your heart ache, you want it so!” Hang in there friends.
