“In the House of the Trembling Eye” Artist Spotlight: Charline von Heyl Charline von Heyl (b. 1960, Germany) moved to the United States in the 1990s, and currently lives between New York and Marfa. Her dynamic abstract paintings—informed by her early participation in the 1980s art scene in Cologne—engage perspective, configuration, narrative and gesture. Von Heyl’s 2013 painting “My Little Doppelgänger Poltergeist Soul” will be on view as part of “In the House of the Trembling Eye,” an exhibition staged by the artist Allison Katz which includes works by Katz alongside artworks by over fifty artists as well as a series of fragments of frescoes from Pompeii. With this project, Katz tackles the definitions of public and private experiences of art in a non-collecting institution. Japanese architect Shigeru Ban is renowned for his innovative material and structural systems that have revolutionized architectural design. In particular, his signature paper tube shelters have transformed global architectural responses to natural disasters and refugee crises. With notable projects including the Centre Pompidou Metz, Cardboard Cathedral, Mount Fuji World Heritage Center, and our very own Aspen Art Museum building— which is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year—Ban is known for his commitment to environmental and ecological design. The decorated architect received the Pritzker Architecture Prize in 2014, and has taught and lectured widely at leading institutions including Keio University, Harvard University, Cornell University, and Kyoto University of Art and Design. Ban has also consulted for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, and was instrumental in the formation of NGO Voluntary Architects’ Network (VAN), which provides disaster relief in the form of architectural solutions in the wake of major global catastrophes. Most recently, The Glass House installed a modified version of the system for Ban’s original Paper Log House in Kobe, Japan, in 1995, which is on view through December 2024. “In the House of the Trembling Eye” opens in two weeks! The expansive group exhibition curated by London-based artist Allison Katz brings together over 100 artworks and objects, including a series of fragments of frescoes from Pompeii. Organized in collaboration with the Archaeological Park of Pompeii, the exhibition will be the first in North America to unite contemporary art with these ancient artifacts. In 2023, Katz participated in Pompeii Commitment's Digital Fellowship program, in which she conducted research into what it means for the artist to be engaging with the complexities of Pompeian heritage and the legacy of its artistic styles that determined foundational codes of form, beauty and iconography in the Western art historical discourse. A genre-expanding force in contemporary jazz, Jason Moran is a highly acclaimed pianist, composer, artist and educator. Known for his innovative compositions that meld traditional jazz principles with contemporary influences, Moran’s musical journey began at age six, when he first started piano lessons. Since then, he has been recognized with a MacArthur Fellowship, released numerous critically acclaimed albums, collaborated with leading artists and performers including Julie Mehretu, Joan Jonas and Kara Walker, and performed for millions across the globe. He currently serves as Artistic Director for Jazz at the Kennedy Center, teaches at New England Conservatory, and curates programming for Park Avenue Armory and Louis Armstrong Center. Using urethane in a method that combines painting and sculpture, artist Ryan Sullivan, [born 1983, Malone, NY] pours the colored resin layer that becomes the painting's face. Once 'frozen' thin and flat overnight in a floor mold the rest of the work is built from the back. Like a ceramicist with a kiln, the artist doesn't see the finished work until it has congealed and can be ‘set free’ from the enclosure....and is supported by the many layers of dense pigment behind the frail surface glaze. Happy Earth Day 🌎 For her exhibition “Nature, Sweet Nature”, presented on our Roof Deck Sculpture Garden in 2020–2021, Maren Hassinger presented two site-specific wire and concrete works that mimic verdant forms and engage with the outdoor environment. For her piece “Paradise Regained,” thick wire strands lean in rows, emulating planted grasses or reeds bent by the wind. The second sculpture in her exhibition, “Garden,” was installed in the roof deck planters—appearing like a wild unraveled vine amid the decorative flowers and bushes. In a roundtable conversation with curator Simone Krug and art historian and curator Lowery Stokes Sims, Hassinger shared her thoughts on these sculptures: “there is something about those spindly, curvy things that make you think about how nature isn’t automatically a given.” Read more from the roundtable at the link in our bio. The exhibition unfurls across the museum’s three levels, divided into thematic groupings that showcase the artist’s innovative use of materials—from crushed automobile parts to foam, foil, and paper. This comprehensive exhibition reveals Chamberlain’s exploration of motion, pressure, and color, marking the first major institutional survey of his work in over a decade. Chamberlain’s curiosity and refusal to adhere to a single artistic movement are evident throughout his career, from his early fascination with aviation to his engagement with Abstract Expressionism and beyond. We continue to appreciate the exhibit "Jay DeFeo: The Ripple Effect," which was organized six years ago at the Consortium Museum (@le_consortium), Dijon, France, by Franck Gautherot and Seungduk Kim, and traveled to the Aspen Art Museum (@aspenartmuseum), Aspen, Colorado. The title, "The Ripple Effect," refers to DeFeo’s lasting influence on contemporary artists working today. The exhibition presented a core selection of the artist’s work in drawing, painting, collage, and photography, and examined her legacy through the work of eleven contemporary artists, all of whom appreciated her deliberate approach and vision. The other artists featured in this exhibition were Trisha Donnelly, Sam Falls, Rachel Harrison, Wyatt Kahn, Ron Nagle, Gay Outlaw, Tobias Pils, R.H. Quaytman, Ugo Rondinone, Bosco Sodi, Oscar Tuazon. In Lena Henke’s exhibition “You and your vim,” four “Combustions” (2023), works in oil on laser-etched leather, hang from adjacent walls and one window of the rooftop architecture. They surround the sculpture like cardinal points, bridging the interior and exterior of the museum’s rooftop. Each work portrays an image of feet wrapped in latex, bursting out of the picture plane as well as the material that struggles to contain them. These photographic images, burned into leather, are embellished with expressive mark-making in oil. Their titles nod to Alberto Burri’s iconic “Combustione,” a body of work that similarly utilized heat. Within these explorations of place and personhood lies a negotiation of desire, dominance, and submission. Where does one fit? Who is in control? Cauleen Smith’s exhibition, “Mines to Caves,” incorporates a candle sculpture composed of different colored wax layers with wicks that will be lit daily at set times, activating and destroying the work in one turn. Tubing In Aspen Round . The Aspen Art Museum opened its current building in 2014, a sleek modern design by Japanese architect Shigeru Ban. He is known for using paper materials in his work, and the museum interior is articulated with simple cardboard tubes lining walls, ceilings, and fashioned into benches.
