🩷Huge thanks to Oxfordshire gallery @wychwood_art for finding a new home for my work, 'Rosy Granite Coast (l)'. The first in a series of big paintings in pale hues inspired by the beautiful granite on the coast between Land's End and Porthcurno. It's a special gift for someone, which is a delight to know. It's hard to photograph pale textured work. There's a lot of pale pink, white, cream, green and turquoise layers here over a dark under painting with scraping back and scratching through to create the texture. I did enjoy creating these works inspired by my walks in Spring between Land's End and Porthcurno. This one is over a metre wide in oils mixed with cold wax, pigments and rock powder. Named because the Cornish granite in Spring reminded me of the 'Cote de Granite Rose' coastline in northern Brittany, which I first met back in the 1980s during my geological research. Beautiful pink granite. I'm absolutely delighted that 'Three Wishes' has been bought from @wychwood_art by a lady who lives in St Ives. She first saw this one last year at our @mac_rags exhibition at the Crypt here in St Ives and loved it, but then thought it had been sold. She was delighted to discover it was for sale with @wychwood_art . It's gone to the best possible home, as it will be looking out over Porthmeor Beach and the Island. 'Three Wishes' was intuitively painted, inspired by the sky, shallows and deeper waters of St Ives Bay. Some people see the iconic arches of St Ives harbour, others see waves. Either or both is fine by me 🩵💙🤍. I am particularly fond of this one as it was part of my submission for membership at @stivessociety last year. 60 cm square, oil paint and cold wax over acrylic. 💙💙💙I'm really delighted that these three have gone to a new home in Somerset. I was so glad to meet Carol and Ian who enjoyed my work but couldn't make up their minds which ones to go for, so they took a selection of works to try out at their home which they have been refurbishing. They settled on 'Blue Wander (lll), 30 cm square in a white St Ives tray frame; 'Some Other Time and Place (lll)', 40 cm square in a dark blue tray frame and 'Navigating the Ancient (lll)', 50 cm square in a dark blue tray frame. I love that they will be in the same space and am looking forward to seeing how they are placed. Fascinating to explore wet on wet acrylic painting on canvas paper today, including some dry pigments, and then a little rule breaking by putting on a bit of cold wax on before the acrylic was completely dry. As always, my work is drawing-based, and these pieces are small silverpoint drawings focussing on people seen in found photographs bought, over the course of years, at the same Margate second-hand shop. Drawing at Ann's for four of us this morning. Started with coffee, looking at various things including peppers, aubergine, cyclamen....moved onto prosecco and mince pies. 🧡🤍🖤🤎 Back to Cornwall after my three week 'Earthen' exhibition @bristolguildofappliedarts with the lovely Far Flung Collective. Taking down and packing up the car yesterday was a lot quicker than the three day curation and hanging process. Long drive today🥱 It was a lovely exhibition experience with fabulous meetups, conversations and discussions about next year's planned exhibition in St Ives. Here's a few from my new Convergence and Time and Tide collections of smaller abstract works in white St Ives tray frames that sold recently. There are still some available from these series including a number with @little_buckland_gallery and in my studio too. Well, this was all rather lovely. Excellent nine course vegetarian taster menu @bulrushrestaurant in Cotham, Bristol, last night with my young ones. We were seated next to one of the three paintings the restaurant acquired from me in October. It was super to see the works, Batholith II and III and Tectonic III in situ with the cosy evening lighting. They are very much at home there. The food and wine were absolutely superb, and the Bulrush team certainly deserve their Michelin star. Orange for a dull day. Some of the small works from my new 'Convergence' series, currently at #Earthen at the Bristol Guild. These are 15 cm square in white tray frames. This series was inspired by the rocks of the Cornish coast and its mining heritage at sunrise and sunset. The title 'Convergence' reflects the way the sand, rock and sea meet. The hues of rusty orange seen in the rocks around where I live are very striking against the dark grey and greens of the sedimentary and volcanic rocks, as well as the lighter times of the granite. In these abstractions I really wanted to celebrate the orange. My big diptych 'Shining Through the Rocks' ( l and ll) continues to give me trouble to photograph! Gallery lights make it hard to get the whole image right but corners are more manageable. The bigger of the two is 125x100 cm, the smaller posted on Friday is 95x100 cm. Painting as diptychs mean I can take a painting overall much bigger than I could otherwise (limited by car size!). They work as singles or a pair on the same wall or adjacent or opposite walls. These works are in oil, pigment, rock powder and cold wax, strongly textured, with complex darks and rich colour, on canvas. They were a real joy to make as a celebration of the Cornish costal path between St Ives and Land's End. This is 'Shining Through the Rocks (ll)'. One of a new large diptych pair for 'Earthen' at @bristolguildofappliedarts . Inspired by my walks among the ancient 300 million year rocks of the Cornish coast path close to home in St Ives. I'm particularly drawn to the wild and rugged stretch between St Ives and Land's End. Steep cliffs, old mine workings, wild sea, seals swimming. All emotionally absorbing in every sense, whatever season or weather. Dark, textural paintings are really hard to photograph and its larger partner which is on the stairway entrance wall at the exhibition is even trickier. Hopefully if the light is right later, I will capture the bigger one later today. They are in oil, pigment, rock powder, cold wax, on canvas. My 'Quiet Morning' series at @bristolguildofappliedarts quietly sitting alongside @bethanjonesceramics Here, from top left are V, ll, lll, lV and VI. They are 30 cm square works, except V which is 25cm and VI which is 20cm, with their lovely St Ives tray frames making them overall a considerably bigger picture with room to rest and breathe. In oil on wood panels, they were inspired by misty autumn mornings over Gwithian which I can see from my upstairs window at home in Carbis Bay. The first in the series (the last one on the scroll) sold from the studio floor while it was still wet, and the buyer received it in its frame this week and just messaged to say she absolutely loves it. Unintended consequences😅 of a day in the studio. What started out as a minor repair to a frame for one of my paintings for 'Earthen' at @bristolguildofappliedarts led to a little further selective glazing to said painting, which led to me digging out a pile of old panels and using up all the left over glazes on the old panels. To be reconsidered in December 😀, meanwhile, looking forward to returning to Bristol next week for stewarding.
