It takes young Crested Caracaras 6-8 weeks before they take their first flight. Until then, they'll spend their time in their nest, nestled in a cactus or tall tree, being fed by both their parents. šŸŒµ Crested Caracara feeds its chicks in their nest in a cactus in Tucson, Arizona. šŸ“·: Joshua Pelta-Heller (@koalaphotography)/Audubon Photography Awards

Have you seen or heard any Inca Doves in cities of the southwest? These little doves are often seen walking about on lawns with dainty steps, or fluttering up with a rattle of wings. It's hard to find these birds in natural habitats away from towns or farms since they prefer areas near people. Four Inca Doves huddle together on a branch in Mohave county, Arizona. šŸ“·: John Morales/Audubon Photography Awards

STOP SCROLLING! This is your reminder to keep soaring ā€” even if your wings have taken a few hits along the way. šŸ˜Š šŸ¦‹šŸ–¤šŸ¤ Fluttering through the landscape with its striking black and white stripes, the Zebra Longwing butterfly (Heliconius charithonia) graces us with a glimpse into the complexity of natureā€™s adaptability and beauty. While the Zebra Longwing is more commonly associated with humid climates like Floridaā€™s, where it is celebrated as the state butterfly, Arizonaā€™s diverse habitats sometimes welcome these wanderers during their migrations. The desert may not be their typical home, but butterfly enthusiasts might occasionally spot them in the more lush and tropical microclimates within the state, such as botanical gardens or riparian areas that mimic their preferred environment. Not just a pretty sight, these butterflies have fascinating behaviors. Theyā€™re known for their longevity, which is partly due to their ability to ingest pollen. Unlike most butterflies that sip nectar, Zebra Longwings can digest pollen, granting them extra protein and a longer life to flutter about ā€” a phenomenon that is quite exceptional in the butterfly world. Their unique communal roosting habit is a beautiful example of insect social behavior. As twilight descends, they gather together, aligning themselves in rows upon a shared perch to spend the night. Come dawn, they set out solo or in groups, tracing nectar trails and seeking out passionflower vines to lay their eggs, ensuring the next generation continues their delicate dance through the air. . . . #zebralongwing #butterflyflyaway #butterflyappreciation #arizonafauna #arizonawildlifephotography #southwestphotography #keepsoaring #dailyinspiration #explorearizona #exploreaz #naturefacts #natureeducation #arizonanaturephotographer #wildlifephotos #butterflyphotography #azlife #azliving #butterflymigration

Arizona Night Lizard (Xantusia arizonae) A endemic species to the state of Arizona, similar to its cousin Xantusia bezyi. This species is a rock crevice specialist, making them a bit more tricky to find compared to its other cousin Xantusia vigilis. Xantusia arizonae have a somewhat of a decent range but can be difficult to find as they prefer specific habitat within the range. A lot of us who find these guys and really push into them believe there is so much more to learn about this somewhat secretive species. Hopefully in the future more things can get cleared up on this species for a better understanding of them. This is the darkest individual I have personally found and was a complete stunner. This was also one of the largest I have found at around 2 inches snout to vent length. #arizonanightlizard #nightlizard #nightlizards #xantusiaarizonae #xantusia #arizonae #arizonaendemic #herp #herping #herpetology #herpingtheglobe #herpingarizona #arizonawildlife #lizardsofarizona #arizonalizards #lizardsofinstagram #lizardphotography #arizonawildlifephotography #wildlifephotography #arizonahighways #arizona #arizonanature #naturephotography #desertwildlife #sonorandesert #sonywildlifephotographer #sonyalpha #macrophotography #macro #sigmamacrolens

Check out the tail on this white-nosed coati! Their tails can be as long as their bodies, sometimes even longer. They are mostly used for balance but Iā€™m betting they can use them in tall grass to follow the leader. . . . #whitenosedcoati #coatimundi #coatimundis #coatimundisofinstagram #coati #coatis #wildlife #wildlifephotography #wildphotography #animals #animalphotography #nature #naturephotography #roamingexposure #wanderingphotographer #arizona #arizonawildlife #arizonawildlifephotography #gilaboxripariannationalconservationarea #bonitacreek #wildlifewatching

I saw a whole pack of white-nosed coatis, including babies! Sadly, I didnā€™t get any photos of the babies. I was driving through the canyon when a pack of roughly 7 or 8 crossed the road. I stopped and tried to get my camera out but I missed the bunch of them. I noticed they were heading towards the canyon wall so I pushed through some brush and mesquite trees and found a crevice in the canyon wall that they were climbing up. I must say, they are excellent climbers. The next day I scoped out the area at dawn and dusk, hoping to see the whole pack and get some shots of the adorable furry babies but it was no use. The weekend brought campers, loud trucks, UTVs, music and dogs, none of which makes wildlife photography any easier. Maybe next time. . . . #whitenosedcoati #coatimundi #coatimundis #coatimundisofinstagram #coati #coatis #wildlife #wildlifephotography #wildphotography #animals #animalphotography #nature #naturephotography #roamingexposure #wanderingphotographer #arizona #arizonawildlife #arizonawildlifephotography #gilaboxripariannationalconservationarea #bonitacreek #rockclimber

Iā€™m not well equipped for night photography but that didnā€™t stop me from attempting to catch some nightlife with just my camera and trusty headlamp. And Iā€™m so glad I did. I was walking through the canyon, shining my light back and forth through the mesquite and cottonwood trees, when I see a pair of glowing yellow eyes near the canyon wall. I tried to keep track of them, but would lose them behind branches and trees, then I started to notice that they werenā€™t running off, but coming towards me. My first thought was a mountain lion coming to size me up, and I got pretty nervous. That didnā€™t stop me from setting up my tripod and hoping to at least get a shot off before panic sets in and I start yelling. But then I noticed that it was pretty small and was jumping around from branch to branch, tree to tree. It was a ringtail! I was so excited to see one in the wild and the fact that it wasnā€™t scared of me, even stopping to check me out, made for quite the experience. Taking photos however, was quite the struggle. My headlamp isnā€™t that bright and trying to line up the light and my camera to a subject moving around in the dark, almost seemed futile. Out of all the photos I took, these were the only two that werenā€™t completely blurry. Would have loved to get a full body pic with its striped tail, but will settle for a pic of that adorable face. . . . #ringtail #ringtailcat #minercat #mammal #racoonfamily #wildlife #wildlifephotography #wildphotography #animals #animalphotography #nature #naturephotography #nightlife #nightlifephotography #nightphotography #wildlifeatnight #roamingexposure #wanderingphotographer #arizona #arizonawildlife #arizonawildlifephotography #gilaboxripariannationalconservationarea #bonitacreek

How can you attract orioles to your yard? Plant native plants! šŸŒæ Orioles enjoy a diverse diet: They also love nectar, particularly from sturdy flowers they can perch on. In the West, Hooded or Bullockā€™s Orioles may visit agave and ocotillo, while in the East, Baltimore and Orchard Orioles feed from trumpet creeper or coral honeysuckle vines. And all orioles adore fruitā€”especially dark, ripe fruit. Mulberries and grapes are bonafide favorites. šŸ‡ A Hooded Oriole on a Fouquieria splendens (Ocotillo) a native plant in Green Valley, Arizona. šŸ“·: Don Larkin (@larkinnaturephotos)/Audubon Photography Awards
