Diskotür – DTLP 10003 : 3 Hür-El - S/T Psychedelic percussive frenzy and heavy shredding by the Hürel brothers from Turkey, early movers within the Anadolu rock realm. This is their debut, and it slays. A collection of their singles from ‘70 and ‘71, released on the Diskotür imprint. I think they were also the studio band for the label and they won several awards in those early years before they disbanded due to the sudden tragic loss of their mother. The band consisted of three brothers Orun, Haldun and Feridun. Their compositions were based around Feridun’s self-made 18 string instrument, a sort of hybrid of electric saz and guitar. Haldun’s drum kit was also fitted with Egyptian darbukas and along with Orun’s heavy handed bass, they made a killer combo. Many brilliant moments on this LP if you fancy Turkish psychedelia. Yonca - YCA 8037 : Fikret Kizilok - Zaman Zaman About 15 years ago during a work trip to Turkey, I stopped by a music store off Bagdat Street in Istanbul and asked for new album recommendations. Mor ve ötesi was one of the bands they recommended and that’s where I heard “Sevda Çiçeği” for the first time. I found out that it was Fikret Kizilok who penned the composition, even though others have played their own versions over the years. His version does come very close to Orhan Gencebay’s splendid song called “Tanrıya Feryat” which was released by Gencebay as early as 1971. Most likely, they are all derived from the same traditional Bektasi hymn. Mor ve ötesi does not disappoint with their heavy grungy rendition of the tune (check out the last slide). This record is damn good and a top folk record out of Turkey. Kizilok released this in 1983 after a 5 year hiatus from making music to focus on family. The tabla, ney, bass and cello mix with Kizilok’s guitars and sublime vocals to create something truly special. My copy came from the one and only @muchosraros a few years ago that I need to upgrade someday.
