Initially operating as « 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐌𝐚𝐥𝐨𝐦𝐛𝐨 𝐉𝐚𝐳𝐳 𝐌𝐞𝐧 » with 𝐀𝐛𝐛𝐞𝐲 𝐂𝐢𝐧𝐝𝐢 (flute) and 𝐉𝐮𝐥𝐢𝐚𝐧 𝐁𝐚𝐡𝐮𝐥𝐚 (percussion) in the 1960’s, the group evolved to Malombo, leaded by the composer, singer & multi-instrumentist 𝐏𝐡𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐩 𝐓𝐚𝐛𝐚𝐧𝐞, and backed by a succession of musicians through years, including the legendary drummer 𝐆𝐚𝐛𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐥 𝐒𝐞𝐠𝐰𝐚𝐠𝐰𝐚 « 𝐌𝐚𝐛𝐢 » 𝐓𝐡𝐨𝐛𝐞𝐣𝐚𝐧𝐞.. The instrumentation is unconventional - African drums and hand percussion, interplaying with Tabane’s unique guitar, vocal, and flute sounds. 𝐍𝐚𝐧𝐚 𝐊𝐨𝐛𝐢𝐧𝐚 𝐍𝐤𝐞𝐭𝐬𝐢𝐚 𝐄𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐤𝐚𝐝𝐨𝐡𝐞𝐧𝐞, gave the band the name 𝐔𝐡𝐮𝐫𝐮 (« Freedom » in Swahili langage), which re-echoed the feeling on the 1957 gained independency of Ghana. Not too long after the formation of Uhuru, Sammy Obot left for Nigeria and Stan Plange became the leader. The band also included : Bob Yoko, George Amissah, Max Hammond, Loughty Lasisi Amao, Duke Duker, Tom Addo, Kpakpo Addo, Darko ‘Patato’ Adams, Mac Tontoh and lady vocalist Charlotte Dada. This track is taken from a record that has another pressing, with different versions & arrangements of the songs. . . 🇲🇶🎶 𝐌𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐧 𝐟𝐥𝐮𝐭𝐢𝐬𝐭 & 𝐩𝐨𝐞𝐭 𝐌𝐚𝐱 𝐂𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐚 𝐥𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐚𝐭 𝐏𝐚𝐧 𝐏𝐢𝐩𝐞𝐫 (𝐏𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐬, 𝐅𝐑𝐀𝐍𝐂𝐄) : 𝟖𝟎𝐭𝐡 𝐛𝐢𝐫𝐭𝐡𝐝𝐚𝐲 𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐲 !   A few days ago, on sunday 25 of february, I had the great chance to see the legendary martinican flutist & poet 𝐌𝐚𝐱 𝐂𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐚 for his 80th birthday party at Pan Piper (@panpiperlive), an intimate concert hall in Paris (France) : what an awesome moment !   Max keeped the fire burning 3 hours (yes !) live on stage, playing his magical flute and taking us far away through a bewitching blend of caribbean Jazz, Folk, Soul, Cadence and even Afro Latin rhythms.   The show was featuring incredible musicians & guests, such :   - the senegalese salsero 𝐁𝐚𝐛𝐚𝐜𝐚𝐫 𝐒𝐚𝐦𝐛𝐞 (80 years old too !), warm Afro Latin moments (videos : 5 + 6) ;   - the japanese flutist 𝐌𝐢𝐞 𝐎𝐠𝐮𝐫𝐚, hot Jazz Funk times (video : 7) ;   - the french harpist 𝐂𝐥𝐚𝐢𝐫𝐞 𝐋𝐞 𝐅𝐮𝐫, deep enchanted parts (video : 8) ;   Cherry on the cake : he had his birthday the same day, so part of his family was here to celebrate during the intermission in a very touching moment.
