As we near the half year mark, these are some of my updates from 2024 so far. Idk what to feel. I feel a lot. Some of the time I have and other times I just got by barely. Throughout the good and bad I never faltered. I remained steadfast and gave it all I had. The uncertainty of whether I would be able to continue to work because of the lack of money to join #sagaftra The incredible support I received in donations and work is something I will not soon forget. Yes, I could easily get a job doing something else. However, in this life you can not have any regrets. This job is incredibly demanding and as equally rewarding. Once a job is done the sense of accomplishment is palpable. #hardworkisitsownreward I stuck it out through all of the ups and downs. I got this far in the game for now. The scariest part of this business is not knowing when your next job is coming in. It takes part action and part blind faith. Always remaining centered knowing that there is work yet to be done. Back from London after a beautiful night in a packed and enthusiastic @spacetalk.ldn. Special mention to the spacy and very comfortable DJ booth and the super nice crew. Here are just some of the records found in Paris and London, some surprises but mostly classics of ours : on the first pic I’m holding the elusive first album by Nigerian lady Theadora Ifudu, it’s afro boogie funk with something special, and I loooove the baseline. If you can not read it, it’s written “This album is dedicated to an endangered specie : those who still believe in love”. Cute, no ? Then you’ll see a great album by Nagat Saghira with the Baligh Hamdy groovy touch in it, a wonderful Guinean record called “Discotheque 75” coming with an amazing cover art, the cult “Afro Blue” by Dee Dee Bridgewater released in Japan, the classic “Ere Mela Mela” by Mahmoud Ahmed, Ethiopian jazz and soul at its finest, French jazz lessons for kids’ motricity, digi zouk and modern gwo ka by Erick Cosaque, a dope Italian soundtrack by Goblin including the funk bomb “Snip Snap”, some Japanese groove with trad instruments, three afro records I cherish by National Badema (from Mali), Bembeya Jazz (from Guinea) and Harry Mosco (from Nigeria), the 1971 issue by electronic music pioneers Malcolm Cecil and Robert Margouleff produced in their studio -the famous TONTO-, and we end with four albums by the Algerian-Egyptian diva Warda, some of them involving her husband Baligh Hamdyyyyyy. Okeh - 112311 : Conjunto Baluartes/Os Baluartes - Nira Gongo A samba-jazz thriller from Brazil named after the mighty Nyiragongo volcano in Congo. Comparable to other great samba records with a jazz bent like Vozes De Bronze’s Populario No.1 or Jose Prates’ Tam...Tam...Tam! among others. And it has some cool psychedelic moments driven by the vocal effects and heavy percussion found throughout the record (check out slide 3). They’re hitting it hard on this one. A long time want finally crossed-off thanks to Carlos @plainmusic_records. Grateful for friends like @djrrecords who passed this on in spite of being a top want, just so I could have it. Plants are beautiful medicine. I practice ancestral wellness daily through ceremonies and rituals gifted from elders. I learned about healing and how to love in mi abuelita’s (my grandmother’s) kitchen. I think about the importance of food. As someone who lives with a chronic condition (an invisible illness) how I feed myself is essential, I must do it thoughtfully and with kindness. I must be deliberate, specific, intentional. I approach food as ritual. I grew up shopping in my neighborhood botánica and at the corner bodega. What if I was able to get everything that I need to care for myself in one space? What does loving myself and others through food look like? What does it feel like? “How can it nourish me?” I am always interested in archives housing media, books, artifacts, and documentation of healing practices and foodways in the Black / Afro-Latin community. I am specifically interested in regional plants and their usage in holistic wellness. I am centering the kitchen as a temple for healing ceremonies.
