I noticed quite a few American Lady butterflies visiting my Pearly Everlasting within the last few weeks, which explains the abundance of caterpillar nests tangled in the leaves now. This is an American Lady butterfly egg I discovered inside the leaf shelter of a caterpillar of the same species. The caterpillar built its shelter regardless of the presence of its unhatched sibling. Typical sibling behavior! The egg was covered in fibers due to being an unwitting roommate to its nest-making sibling, so I had to use a fine-tipped brush to gently reposition and free the egg from the surrounding fibers. There’s a fun little science experiment unfolding here at the Patch…the American Lady butterflies have discovered the fabulous Pearly Everlasting Plants and immediately got to work laying eggs which in turn have become little caterpillars which have now started to create the amazing but messy webbing all across the plants to create their safe little spaces to cocoon and eventually create the next generation of American Lady Butterflies. In these moments we are doubly grateful to have found outstanding growers like @gloverperennials who grow these wonderful native plants without the use of harmful pesticides. The plants here may sometimes have fascinating things unfolding on them just like this. This freaks some visitors out a bit. But we are leaving them right on the shelf because the customers we are here for will happily see this as yet another clear sign that they’ve found a place where they can confidently know they are getting plants that are safe - and beneficial - for our wild friends 🐛🦋🐝😊! But wait … best part of the story… the first to discover the caterpillars was an inquisitive and delightful Nayatt School second grade gal who had heard the Team from the Barrington Pollinator Pathway (including Prickly Ed’s own Cindy Larson Moura) speak at her school earlier this week about native plants and pollinators. It really is like magic - I used the winter sowing technique this year to propagate Pearly Everlasting (Anaphalis margaritacea) in a milk jug. Yesterday I planted some in the ground, some in a raised bed and some in a pot on my deck, and today I’m having lunch outside surrounded by fluttering American Lady (Vanessa virginiensis) butterflies, who use this as a host plant. I’ll be keeping an eye out for the silken web that the larvae weave around the plant while they are feeding. If you want butterflies to visit your garden, provide them plants that have the nectar and pollen they need. And a toad!!! This may seem like no big deal.. but this is the first time in the almost 6 years I've been here that I've found a toad in our yard. I used to find them in the suburbs of Guelph all the time as a kid at my grandparents house. Then they were harder and harder to find, and now I very rarely see one around here. I've been setting out water dishes with pebbles with a pot over part of it to make little "toad rest" spots for years and finally! Hands down, Pearly Everlasting has been the most DRAMATIC host plant in my yard, drawing multiple American Lady butterflies DAILY who stop to lay eggs. 🤯 Every time I walk by my plants I accidentally scare a butterfly away! It’s incredible. Given the astounding host plant capability, high pollinator activity and the fact this plant is simply STUNNING in bloom, I think Pearly Everlasting is a must-have for every yard. ☺️ Now that the baby caterpillars are starting to emerge, more and more conventionally “unsightly” webs will appear, and I love the conversation starter it creates. “Why yes…this does look hideous…because something BEAUTIFUL is happening.” 😎 We’re still so early in the season, but the level of life happening right now is just awing me. American Lady butterfly drinking nectar from Marsh Marigold flowers (April 27, 2024) For the past 2 days, we've been watching this American Lady butterfly laying eggs on Pearly Everlasting and Field Pussytoes leaves. My sharp-eyed son spotted the butterfly visiting Marsh Marigold flowers at the top of the stream. It was drinking nectar from the blooms. In the first photo, you can see its proboscis in the flower. There’s quite a big chunk of wing missing. Also notice the eyespots on the underside of the hindwing: American lady has 2 large ones, and painted lady has 4 small ones. This was so exciting yesterday. I garden for wildlife mostly and specifically for pollinators. I struggle to find plants the deer won’t eat for the unfenced parts of my yard. Last year I learned that this plant was a host plant for the American Lady butterfly. It’s not a native plant but it doesn’t show up on our state’s invasive list from everything I can tell and it is definitely deer/rabbit resistant so I ordered it. Today I was out taking some pictures of some of the spring plants in the garden and noticed this butterfly hanging around. So - today was the first time I saw the American Lady Butterfly on the plant I planted last year to attract the American Lady Butterfly. 🦋💖 As Milkweed is to Monarch butterflies, Pearly Everlasting is to the American Lady Butterfly. Their caterpillars can only eat leaves of plants in this family. I planted Pearly Everlasting a few years ago solely to help these beautiful creatures and have subsequently seen their caterpillars every year. But, today was the first day I actually saw adult American Lady butterflies laying their eggs on our Pearly Everlasting. In between egg-laying, they spent time nectaring on the non-native Dandelions in our yard. Needless to say, it was a super-exciting day here!
