The Chicago LGBT Hall of Fame wishes the happiest of birthdays to 2012 inductee Mark Ishaug. Mark was recognized for his years of work as a Chicago social-service administrator concentrating on AIDS and as a political activist. He led the AIDS Foundation of Chicago from 1998 to 2011 and was on its staff since 1991. While there, he led in diversifying its funding base, expanding its services, and heightening its profile as a national authority on AIDS political issues. Before joining AFC, Ishaug worked for CARE International in Mozambique and taught at the University of Mozambique. Lauded in a 2011 Windy City Times profile as a “humanitarian … working zealously for social justice,” Mark Ishaug is a longtime local and national LGBT leader for the rights of vulnerable populations. In his career Ishaug’s extensive political and nonprofit-management experience has advanced a diverse number of causes from international development, food security, and housing to HIV/AIDS advocacy and services for Illinoisans with severe mental illness. In 2012, the board of directors of Thresholds, Illinois’s largest and oldest mental-health service provider, named Ishaug as president and chief executive officer. More than 6,000 Illinoisans with severe mental illness rely on the comprehensive services of Thresholds for their psychosocial treatment, housing, and vocational needs to remain healthy and independent. Why I celebrate Pride 🏳️🌈... . I'm gay. I can remember when thinking those words made me afraid. I knew I was different from the time I was 6 years old. It wasn't until I was 14 that I was able to identify it. It's been a part of me that I've actually never struggled with. Maybe I just accepted it because I was already different as a kid. My home life as a teenager was anything but pleasant. Frankly if I wasn't ducking verbal abuse in the form of ridicule, it was physically abusive. Thankfully, I had my grandparents who I identified as mom and dad. I was always the odd man out in my biological home. I've long since forgiven all of that. I didn't get to come out, but rather was outed. My father was unsurprised, my mother declared war and they still don't accept it. I don't care because I don't need their validation. Never have. If you're struggling, just know it gets better. Why I celebrate Pride is first of all, my friends. I've made great ones and I ❤️them all. I've had the privilege of volunteering for the AIDS Foundation of Chicago and Test Positive Aware Network. I've seen our community come together. I've worked street teams in Chicago and I've seen how we love the looked past and rejected. And as for me? Well, I'm becoming the guy I'm proud of. I'm going to help others achieve a better life through fitness. I'm a best friend, pet rescuer, and professionally successful. No longer does fear take the wheel and drive. And yes, I'm single. No, I'm not always fine with it. Sometimes it's lonely and sometimes it straight up sucks. But I wouldn't trade the experiences and the people I've met in the gay community for anything. I'm hopeful and enthusiastic. There seriously has to be an easier way to get all of my friends together in one place. Maybe next time I’ll just get married or something. All jokes aside, I’m so grateful for this experience. It was hilly, hard, humid, hot. None of which are great for running, let alone a marathon. Running NY gave all of my best friends the chance to converge in one place, and they did. These ladies showed up in the biggest way and I’m still trying to wrap my head around how truly sneaky, thoughtful and supportive they are. They are the absolute best that has ever walked this earth. I’m also having a specific gratitude moment for @team2endaids ♥️ In two years, you all have helped me raise $6,685 for the @aidsfoundationchicago. I do this in loving memory of my uncle, Robert Wanstreet and it all goes to help Illinoisans impacted by HIV/AIDS. I also recognize what being a part of T2 has given me - a brand new community, a chosen family, and an independence I never knew I had. T2 has changed my life when I never expected it to - I just thought I was signing up to run a marathon. Now I have finished my third, and I am proud to run as ever. Last night was the 11th time that @aidsfoundationchicago participated in Molson Coors's, Tap Into Change program. Molson Coors donates $50,000 to support LGBTQ+ and HIV/AIDS nonprofits based on sales at participating bars and restaurants. The program kicked off yesterday 5/26 at @roscoestavern from 7-9 pm, featuring samples of Molson Coors latest innovations, delicious bites from Roscoe’s kitchen, free SWAG, and a short program acknowledging the work of each group.
