Arguably, it can be said that Tim Burton’s decline started with his version of the iconic Sci-Fi saga of The Planet of the Apes. Roughly 30 years after Charlton Heston’s successful adaptation which led to innumerous sequels and several attempts at remaking the saga -including names like Sam Raimi and Oliver Stone- a reboot finally came with Tim Burton’s name on the front of the project. But with the apparent pressure of the Studio, both with the schedules and in the creative process, the final product was confusing and criticised by many critics and true lovers of the saga One of the biggest arguments is that it doesn’t feel like a Burton movie. Far from his characteristic dark and oniric scenarios, this version is mostly set in bright, rocky and desert landscapes; with the fascinating exception of the jungle-like kingdom. With the recent release of ‘Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes’, it’s time to rank all 10 films in the Apes franchise. Before 3 weeks ago, I had only seen the Tim Burton remake, and the Caesar trilogy, so it was interesting to dive into the older ones, which I mostly enjoyed, as I was a fan of 3 of the 5 that came out between 68-73. . . The 1968 original has one of the most iconic twist of all time that you know even if you haven’t seen the film, you’ve seen the clip or images. However, when you see it in the context of the film, it’s incredible. Charlton Heston was fantastic in the lead role, and the build up to him speaking for the first one was *chef’s kiss*. ‘Beneath of the Planet of the Apes’ is a rehash for the first half, then has a very weird mutant human angle for the rest of the film, which is intriguing. ‘Escape From The Planet of the Apes’ has a heartbreaking ending, and I was intrigued by the political elements of the Apes Vs Humans angle. ‘Conquest of the Planet of Apes’ starts off dull but finishes with a bang, and is a huge influence on the Caesar trilogy. . Tim Burton was such an odd choice for the 2001 remake, it tried so hard being a Verhoeven film and mostly failed. I still very much like the performances from Giamatti and Tim Roth, the makeup by the GOAT Rick Baker is great and I dig the ending. . The Caesar trilogy is one of my favorites of this century. ‘Rise’ was such a pleasant surprise as I had low expectations due to the remake. Incredible world building, Caesar’s scenes with Lithgow are 🥺💔. ‘Dawn’ is the GOAT of the franchise, and features Serkis’ best performance as Caesar, love how conflicted he is in this. Toby Kebbell as Koba is menacing and one of the best villains of the last decade. ‘War’ is a fantastic ending, super bleak but perfect. . ‘Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes’ was better than it had any being, paying homage to Caesar’s legacy, while having the adventure vibes of the original films.

Rating: 8/10 Personally this is one of the most criminally underrated films of all time. It is honestly so entertaining just to watch and especially being a marvel fan. It’s also in that era when marvel was darker and it has some grit to it which I always love. This makes the Hulk an incredibly complex character too as we see him deal with PTSD and even unable to do normal everyday things, seeing that emotional toll and complexity makes it a really compelling story, having Norton playing him is an added bonus too. Tim Roth is just wow, I love that actor so much and his take on abomination is insanely cool to watch. For the fans it’s also got the OG hulk cameo and one of Tom’s Spider-Man’s teachers in it which is cool aswell. The main score for the film I think is phenomenal. Every time is comes on I love it and makes for some really epic scenes. The film is just action packed too with some absolutely brutal scenes ever, when Hulk kicks Emil is just insane. Can’t wait to see The Leader/Mr Blue, Agent Ross and Betty return in captain America 4 too and what they do with those characters. (Continuação da Parte 1) Apesar dessa monotonia e de tantas cenas tediosas e pouco inspiradas, ainda existe o entrosamento necessário para entregar conceitos interessantes, como o fato da sociedade dos macacos preservar comportamentos animalescos e instintos adversos a seu ideal de moralidade e também a existência de um culto a uma figura messiânica, remetendo diretamente o embate filosófico do filme original caracterizado ali pela autoridade religiosa aqui substituída pelo poderio militar do General Thade (Tim Roth), apenas o melhor personagem em cena. A direção de Tim Burton é bastante elogiável e demonstra versatilidade ao expressar sua perspectiva particular sem sobressair a estética original, mantendo as escolhas artísticas perfeitamente alinhadas. Do filme original preservam-se as transições em fade, os contrastes entre ficção científica e fantasia dramática primitiva e o desfecho monumental, detalhes que Burton ilustra com um certo ar cartunesco, alívios cômicos pastelões e cenários pitorescos. Além disso, o diretor inspira-se na amplitude cósmica de Kubrick durante o prólogo espacial, criando sua breve homenagem a “2001 - Uma Odisseia no Espaço”. Também cabe ressaltar que a caracterização dos macacos é provavelmente o melhor uso de efeito prático antes do advento do CGI com captura de movimentos, a maquiagem utilizada é expressiva e perfeitamente convincente, escapando com êxito do temido vale da estranheza. O “Planeta dos Macacos” de Tim Burton reúne elementos clássicos e toma decisões ousadas com os mesmos, cria-se ali uma ambientação e visual que gera interessa mas onde muito pouco é aproveitado, como se o filme em si não soubesse qual rumo tomar para sustentar seu argumento além do óbvio. Não é o pior da franquia mas também está longe ser o melhor, e talvez esse caráter de mediano o faça ser esquecido. A partir disso, toda aquela trama de suspeita evolutiva é deixada de lado para retratar um confronto mais direto entre humanos e macacos, ideia também utilizada e refinada no “revival” seguinte da franquia, “Planeta dos Macacos - A Origem” de 2011. Em meio a batalha eugenista entre as espécies dominantes, o filme até tenta criar um vínculo maior entre os personagens mas suas interações são limitadas apenas a correrem de um lado para o outro enquanto se encaram expressando preocupação e desconfiança provocativa, e esta é a principal fraqueza da obra, a ausência total de atração proveniente do elenco, são poucos os integrantes que expressam uma mínima personalidade, mesmo que arquetípica, alguns somem no meio da história e não sentimos falta, e o próprio protagonista já é tratado como um “salvador” rápido demais, sem desenvolver qualquer apego com aquele mundo que vá além de seu objetivo de ir embora. Julius Onah’s Luce is a film that’s so well written and acted, its ideas presented with so much welcome complexity I almost felt under qualified in trying to dissect it. Based on a heady, thematically prickly stage play of the same name, this narrative focuses on an upper middle class couple (Tim Roth & Naomi Watts) and their son Luce (Kelvin Harrison Jr.). Luce is adopted and spent the first six years or so of his life living with rebels in the war torn African nation he was rescued from. He is now top of his class, valedictorian and example to all his age around him… or so most people seem to think, except for one of his teachers (Octavia Spencer). After she makes a discovery in his locker that shocks her, she makes it her mission to scrutinize his every move and indirectly tarnish the glowing reputation he has with his parents and basically everybody else in the school. This is a tough film to summarize; it’s not really a thriller but you’ll find yourself in utmost suspense as the unpredictable narrative turns and anthropologically fascinating dramatic beats play out. All the performances are utterly spellbinding, Harrison intuitive beyond his years, Watts emotionally fervent as ever, Roth tones down his tendency to sometimes over act/annunciate for something more subtly brittle, Spencer is her usual powerhouse self and then some, and further rich supporting work is offered from Norbert Leo Butz as a charismatic teacher who leads the debate team and Andrea Bang (remember her from Kim’s Convenience??) in a difficult turn as Luce’s sometimes girlfriend that’s a tricky role to pull off, but she nails it beautifully. This is a film that asks the tough questions, and refuses to answer all of them. Real life is like that, we don’t always get all our issues and suffering resolved neatly, if at all, and you’ll come out of this one thoroughly rattled at the things it asks you to ponder. Great film.

. Invincible (2001) Directed by Werner Herzog Watched: 21/05/2024 Rating: 6/10 This really could've been great, and I'm a bit disappointed it was merely decent. Werner Herzog's one of my favorite directors, Tim Roth is always great (he has a villainous role here), Udo Kier has a supporting role here (he's a match made in heaven for the Herzog style), and Hans Zimmer even co-composed the score for this film. For what it's worth, that poster also caught my eye, and recalls a memorable image from 1922's Dr. Mabuse the Gambler. Furthermore, Invincible also has an interesting setting and premise, too, taking place in Berlin during the 1930s and following a Jewish strongman who becomes loved by some and hated by others - namely, the members of the Nazi Party. There's so much potential here, both with what the movie focuses on and who was involved. And Invincible isn't bad; it's watchable, it's well-presented, and, shock horror, the good actors give good performances. But I couldn't shake the feeling that it wasn't as engrossing as it could be, and it felt a bit overlong and sagged in places pacing-wise, too. Herzog's hit it out of the park more often than most filmmakers, so a slight misfire is forgivable. Even then, Invincible isn't a total misfire, because there's still a bit here to appreciate and get wrapped up in. Lesser Herzog is still good for the most part, I guess, but I really wanted to come away from this singing its praises as an unfairly overlooked film by the great German filmmaker (whose filmography I've now seen about half the titles from, and I feel like I've already worked my way through most of his bonafide classics... but time will tell if that's really the case or not). #invincible #invincible2001 #wernerherzog #udokier #timroth

I've seen a lot of screenings in my day, but I've never seen anything quite as riotous as the opening night showing of this at the Detroit Film Theater. I saw pop projectiling from audience members mouths and noses, unable to control themselves against the sheer outrageousness coming down at them from the big screen! Definitely one of the most massively entertaining pictures of it's or any era. It won the Palme d'Or at Cannes then went on a barnstorming tour of summer festivals before finally hitting US screens that fall. Hier ist meine Review zu "Planet der Affen - Remake": Mit etwas Abstand besser geworden. Tim Burton war einst mein absoluter Lieblingsregisseur. Doch diese Zeit ist lange vorbei, denn seit geraumer Zeit haut er nur noch mittelmäßige bis schwache Filme heraus. Sein Planet der Affen Remake war für mich damals der erste Film von ihm, der mir nicht gefallen hat. Gerade als Fan der alten Saga, hatte ich mit dem Film schon immer inhaltlich zu kämpfen. Jetzt, mit ein bisschen Abstand, habe ich tatsächlich ein wenig meinen Frieden mit dem Film geschlossen. Er lässt sich gut durch gucken, hat wahnsinnig tolle Kostüme und einen ziemlich guten Schurken. Astronaut Leo und seine Crew trainieren auf einer Raumstation Affen zur Weltraumfahrt. Eines Tages gerät sein Affe Perikles in einen elektromagnetischen Sturm. Sofort eilt er Perikles hinterher, findet sich aber kurz darauf auf einem fremden Planeten wieder und muss feststellen, dass hier Menschen von Affen gejagt und versklavt werden. Nachdem er sich mehr oder weniger mit der Welt arrangiert hat, sucht er nach einem Ausweg aus dieser misslichen Lage. Machen wir uns nichts vor: Die Story ist totaler Blödsinn. Gerade wenn man an das Ende denkt, muss man sich immer an den Kopf fassen. Lässt man mal aber diese Hanebüchen-Story außen vor, ist der Film ordentlich inszeniert. Der Planet (diesmal nicht die Erde) sieht toll aus, die Schlachten werden großartig bebildert und alles wirkt recht kurzweilig. Das Highlight sind aber die Masken, denn die sehen mal richtig stark aus und im Vergleich zum Original, sind hier alle Masken individuell. Es bleibt trotzdem ein bitterer Beigeschmack durch die blödsinnige Story, denn die hat weder Hand noch Fuß und man fragt sich ernsthaft, was Burton hiermit vor hatte.
