2024.4.23 - 2024.4.26 🇺🇸 San Francisco, CA 三藩市是一座偉大的城市。 從市中心的Powell Street出發，乘搭仍然由人手運作的纜車，攀過一個又一個起伏的山坡。在臨海的城市，每次下坡都像奔向海洋。到達倫巴律街(Lombard Street)，在綠意盎然的街道中，有著多個連續的狹窄急彎，司機既興奮又小心翼翼地一路往下駛，遊客在下方拍著各式各樣的照片，街道盡頭的另一方則可遠眺漁人碼頭和海灣大橋。這就是三藩市有趣的地方，每個畫面都有無盡的美學和層次。 三藩市又名舊金山，早在上兩個世紀便有華人在此定居。市內全北美最大的華埠/唐人街，正正記載著這段尋「金」的歴史。從踩入唐人街的一刻，我便感覺到自己彷彿坐上時光機，回到上世紀的華人社會。中式店鋪的密度比香港高出許多，招牌的舊字體（是繁體！）別具韻味，當中更找到不少我以為已被淘汰的店鋪：工作介紹、影樓、沖曬、廉價旅遊等等，實在是大開眼界。彷如時間停止的唐人街，還保存了味道和一種身份自豪感。麵包鋪裡的蛋撻、腸仔包和奶茶，麵店中的牛腩雲吞麵，手工沒有香港的粗糙，味道都比香港好，感受到的，是店主在背後用心保存回憶中的香港。偶爾跟店主閒聊幾句，他們都說這裡的生活很好。跟他們說我從夏威夷來，珠寶店的老闆娘笑著說這裡一定比夏威夷好，如果有機會記得多點來。這種對社群的自豪感，我很久沒有感受過。 離開親切的唐人街，一個人在寒風凜冽的下午登上阿爾卡特拉斯島 (Alcatraz Island)。島上的監獄曾是美國最高設防的監獄。有趣的是，監獄關閉後，印地安人曾短暫佔領小島，發展成小社區。這座小島，可謂是囚牢和自由的象徵。走進監獄主樓，語音導覽繪形繪色地描述昔日監獄的運作和囚犯的生活，最精彩的當然是不可思議的越獄事件。幾個囚犯用湯匙和假人，竟然能成功避過重重阻礙，難怪電影亦以此為材。到參觀的結尾，最令我意想不到的，是設有有關現代囚禁的特展。展中以不同數據指出美國的監禁率比外地高，黑人的囚禁比例亦不合理地高、囚禁對個人、家庭和公共財政帶來的負擔，最後還問了大家「大規模監禁與奴隸制有關？」我欣賞的，是他們有正視歷史/現在錯誤的勇氣。 在最後一天，走到傳說中的Vista Point看金門大橋。大橋跨越海灣，由興建至今，依然能抵禦地震、潮汐和強風的力量。為什麼我說三藩市是座偉大的城市？登上山丘，鮮紅色的金門大橋在陰天的烏雲下，依然宏偉和耀眼。 三天的行程縱使排得滿滿，但還有許多地方未有時間踏足。在飛機上回看，大橋連接著整個灣區。這就是三藩市/舊金山，在起伏不休的山坡上，盛載著昔日的歷史回憶和今天的生活點滴，和兩者之間難以切割的故事。 San Francisco is a great city. Departing from Powell Street in the city centre, I took the man-operated tram which climbs the slopes one after one. As the 'city by the bay', it feels like running into the ocean everytime when going down slope. At Lombard Street, there are sharp and consecutive turns down the greenery street. The drivers are driving the cars down carefully and with excitement. Tourists are taking numerous pictures at the end of the slope. From the other end of the street, you can see the Fisherman Wharf and Bay Bridge far away. This is how interesting San Francisco was, every frame is artistic and full of layers. In Chinese, San Francisco also known as 'the old gold mountain'. Chinese started to live here since the last two centuries. San Francisco Chinatown, the biggest Chinatown in North America, witnesses this 'gold-finding' history. We also loved North Beach, Chinatown and Union Square! We had the White Chocolate Mocha and Okinawa Kokuto latte. The Kokuto,, brown sugar was a good accent and aroma. We also got the Orange Scone, black sesame mochi muffin, Ube mochi muffin and Japanese Tamago Sando. 🍰🧁 #sfbayarea While we were walking on the street in downtown in #paloalto, we found a cute French patisserie; @mademoiselle_colette Beautiful cakes and pastries were neatly lined up in a showcase. Items we bought include the Almond Croissant, Lemon Cake and Carrot Cake. They were all not too sweet, classic and tasted very well. In 1896, Adolph Sutro rebuilt the Cliff House as a seven-story Victorian chateau, called by some “the Gingerbread Palace”, below his estate on the bluffs of Sutro Heights. The new building had turrets and an observation tower. It was designed specifically for dining, dancing and entertainment, had several private dining rooms, parlors, bars, and kitchens at the ground level. Private lunchrooms, a large art gallery, a gem exhibit, a photo gallery, a reception room, panoramic views from large windows and an open-air veranda were all located on the upper floors. One of our favorite aspects of San Francisco's Mission District is its many offerings of public art. For a tour of the neighborhood's vibrant, ever-changing murals, a good place to start is Clarion Alley, a conglomeration of rather impressive (and socially-charged) pieces protected by the Clarion Alley Mural Project. (Set of Drifters tip: Look for great block parties held here each October.) CAMP began in 1992, the brainchild of six North Mission residents who wanted to foster a location where artists could create work that spoke to both “social inclusiveness” and “aesthetic variety.” A wander up and down Clarion will only take about 15 minutes and showcases some of the best modern work in the Mission! If you are looking for a more structured experience, contact the Precita Eyes Muralists to inquire about one of several tour options of the neighborhood. Ticket prices run about $25 USD, and are well worth it. The operators of Precita are well-versed on both the Mission District’s history and the murals that rose out from its tumult. As a collective, they strive to educate both community residents and inner city children about the tradition and beauty that emanates from these great modern-day works of art. In fact, they work with city planners, neighborhood merchants and local artists to ensure more than 40 new murals are created each year! #PhotoOfTheDay
